Reflections from a Carpenter’s Angle
CHEW YOUR FOOD
This week on February third, we will bless throats of
those who attend the morning mass at eight O'clock
and our PREP students on Tuesday night. I believe in
the prayers of Saint Blaze. Every year I have received
the blessing ever since I was a little child. Three
different times I survived choking. Once I choked on a
chicken bone. I had to go to the hospital before I finally
swallowed it. Another time I choked on a bottle cap. I
could not speak or yell for help! Luckily my mother,
through her intuition, came to my rescue. She hit me on
the back and I coughed it out. The last time was a fish
bone. I was sitting at dinner at St. Charles Seminary.
One of the men at the table was a seminarian from the
diocese of Tucson, Arizona. He was a medical doctor. I
looked at him and with a gasp I said I have a fish bone
lodged in my throat. He told me to just eat a piece of
bread. I did and the bone went down.
Needless to say I am a slow eater. I chew my food well
before I swallow it. But I find that bones and even
bottle caps are not the only things that can get stuck in
our throats. How often do we forget to say a kind word
to the people around us that do so much? How often do
we find an apology stuck in our throat when we know
we should say we are sorry? How often do we become
mute when our faith needs to be defended? The words
somehow get stuck in our throats. How is it that words
and songs of praise that we owe to God never escape the
lungs of so many on Sunday or any other day of the
week?
The scriptures say that man does not live by bread alone
but every word that comes from the mouth of God.
How grateful we should all be that God does not choke
on the words that give us life. We in turn should not
choke on the words that do his will. We should not
choke on words that give him praise, thanks and glory.

The 10 months prior to the World Meeting of
Families have been assigned 10 themes based
on the Preparatory Catechesis Love is Our
Mission: The Family Fully Alive.
February’s theme is Two Become One: “We are not made
to be alone. Human beings need and complete each other.
Friendship and community satisfy that longing with bonds of
common interest and love. Marriage is a uniquely intimate
form of friendship that calls a man and woman to love each
other in the manner of God’s covenant. Marriage is a
Sacrament. Married love is fruitful and offered without
reservation. This love is in the image of Jesus’s faithfulness to
the Church.”

MOMENTS FOR MOTHERS AND
OTHERS! Prayer/Social group: To help stay

interested - connect and build community!
Next gathering: Wed, February 4 from 9AM - 12PM
in the rectory lower level. This month’s topic is
Corporal Works of Mercy and the speaker is Robin
Geller Helms. Included in our day will be: Social time,
special talk/sharing and prayer. Babysitting will be
provided; please bring a snack for your child. For more
information contact Mary Carney at 610-586-1520 or
Kate Walsh at 610- 237- 8739.
Committing to gathering regularly, if not
daily, for a shared meal is a great way to
strengthen your family and to learn how to
pray together. We might always say a
traditional prayer. In doing so, we are also unified with
our larger family, the Catholic Church, whose members
have uttered the same or similar phrases for years upon
years. Said thoughtfully, it resonates. Even on those
days when we zip to the finish, it makes a point—God is
with us, and we thank him. – loyola press
