There will be exceptions due to the church
calendar
How do you book a baptism?
How do we book our wedding?
- please contact our Parish Administrator in
the Church Office, who will discuss with
you availability of dates and times; will talk
to you about the qualifying connection you
have with the parish; and will take you and
your fiancé’s details;
- you will then be contacted by our vicar to
arrange a date to meet.

METHODIST CHURCH (www.brentknollmethodistchurch.com)
Minister
Revd. Margaret Trapp
I quite like February. Not just because the days seem just that little bit longer but it
sees the start of Lent - a time that, as Christians, we traditionally take stock as we
reflect on the events leading up to Easter. Margaret Trapp will be taking our Lent
study course, the first of which will take place on Monday 23rd February at 2.30pm in
the school room. Our Emmaus course will continue on Thursday 5th February at
2.30pm. Both of these will be followed by tea and coffee.
At the end of this month, we will all be preparing for the Women’s World Day of
Prayer, which will be held at East Brent Methodist Church on Friday 6th March. This
year’s service has been written by the Christian women of the Bahamas. Although
written by women, all are invited!
From all of us at Brent Knoll, whatever you are giving up or taking on, we wish you a
peaceful start to the Lenten season.
God bless.

Toddlers
It was lovely to welcome everyone back for the start of the Spring Term,
although as I write this, I can see a beautiful layer of snow covering The Knoll.
Our Winter display boards certainly look appropriate with their wintry scene and
lots of snowmen.
Just a reminder that there will be no Toddlers on Tuesday 17th February as it is
half-term. Back on Tuesday 24th February.

Fun in February - Clear up the Churchyard Day
Fun in February is on 21st February, in the churchyard from around 10am
or whenever you can make it. There is always a job for everyone.
As usual there will be drinks and biscuits taken round by the girls and a
free Ploughman’s lunch to keep everyone going.
De-rust your tools and come and join us – it’s fun.
I shall probably be somewhat jetlagged as only get home the day before, so hope
plenty of you turn up.

A huge thank you to all those who came and sang and contributed to the
amazing amount of £388 which we raised for Macmillan Cancer Support at

We have had a lot of nice comments about the change of venue and what a
lovely atmosphere there was and with the School’s permission will be there again this year.
This year’s event will hopefully be on Monday December 21st.
Thank you to our sponsors David Bull Optometrists and Wyevale (Sanders).
Thanks also to the Brent Knoll News for supplying the Christmas Tree on the Green.
This event would not be possible without the support of those who do the catering, help with
lights, give out carol sheets and donate food, so a big thank you. Mike and Margaret Smith

Holiday Accommodation
Three bedroom apartment, sleeping six. Overlooking the harbour. In
Porthmadog, Gwynedd, North Wales. Porthmadog has a rich maritime and
railway history, being the terminus of both the Welsh Highland Railway
and the Blaenau Ffestiniog Railway. An excellent base for touring the
surrounding area. The famous Italianate village of Portmeirion, built by the
architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, is just 2 miles away, whilst Criccieth
and Harlech castles are within easy
reach.
As are Mt Snowdon,
Caernarfon and Anglesey.
The apartment has good views of the
harbour and the Ffestiniog Railway
terminus. The shops are less than a

WHERE IN OUR VILLAGE
Each month the BKN will have a small picture quiz –
no prizes, but I hope you may enjoy guessing where
the object shown is located within the Parish
boundary.
Last month’s object is the door to the telephone
exchange premises in Brent Street.
This month features another item which you will all have passed many times, but
have you noticed it?
So where is it? The answer and another object will be shown next month.

Brent Knoll Local History Society
The next meeting of the Local History Society will be in February, at 7:30 pm on the
fourth Monday (the 23rd) in the Jubilee Room of the Parish Hall. New members are
always welcome. We do make an enormous charge, normally £1, to cover the hire of
the hall!
I will report on the January meeting (to be held on the 26th) next month. It will
concentrate on a collection of old postcards, kindly lent by Brian Freestone and a
video by another Brian (Smith), who, in collaboration with Pam and Ken Piper, has
created a half hour long view of Burnham at the beginning of the 20th century.
In February we will have a look at a couple of pictures taken when John Arden’s play,
“The Business of Good Government”, was premiered in Brent Knoll church. We will
continue by looking at the will of William Body, and then enjoy some pictures and
other memorabilia originally owned by Pam Dite, which have just been generously
donated to us.
If you have any particular topics you would like to have discussions about during the
Winter season, please do let me know and we will do our best to fit them in. If you
have done any research into aspects of the village history, we would love to hear from
you. If you have any photographs, papers or other matters of historical interest and
are happy to show and discuss them, then please get in touch.

Cinema
This month I have a rather different film to talk about – “The Imitation Game”.
This is the film about Bletchley Park, and the efforts of the people there to crack the
Enigma Code in World War II. Staring Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing, it was
actually a very sad film. Not sad as in tears and tissues, but with the underlying sad
story of Turing’s life.
As a boy at school, he was an outsider bullied by others, but befriended by one boy,
who gave him a book about coding and taught him how to use codes. Sadly,
Christopher had T.B. and one term did not return to school, having died. Alan, in the
head’s study, did not understand, Christopher not having told him about his illness.
The start of a very lonely life, Alan did not make friends easily. He was recruited, but
found it difficult to fit in with the others, and eventually, with Winston Churchill’s help,
built a machine which he hoped would crack the code.
Quite technical, so I will not go into detail (not sure I could!), but it was a chance
remarkably a girl in the typing pool which showed the way to crack the code, thus
saving many lives.
Alan Turing, after the war, was arrested and tried for
homosexuality, which was a crime in the ‘40’s and ‘50’s. He was given a choice
between a prison sentence or chemical treatment. He chose the latter, as a prison
sentence would have separated him from his work and his machines. The treatment,
however, had bad side effects, making him clumsy and with serious trembles. He
committed suicide in later years, a fact put on the screen at the end of the film.
Benedict Cumberbatch was absolutely brilliant and should get the Oscar, his portrayal of
Alan Turing was amazing. The scenes at Bletchley when he was threatened with losing
his machine, as it wasn’t working, were pretty heart-rending – he had called his machine
Christopher, which tells a lot about his life and the sadness with which it was imbued.
Different from our usual fare, but very good film, with brilliant acting. Pauline Chadwick

Brent Knoll House Histories
Andrews’s Tenement – 10
Before looking at the Lennard family history in more detail, however, I want to return
for a while to discuss some of the buildings on and adjacent to the site.
Oddly neither of the inventories discussed previously mentions any cottages attached
to the premises, though this picture, probably taken sometime in the 1920s or 1930s,
clearly shows two
semi-detached
cottages
situated
between
“The
Laurels” and “Myrtle
Cottage”. As they will
have
some
significance later, it
may be as well to
spend
a
brief
The Laurels
Two cottages
Myrtle Cottage
moment
or
two
attempting to discuss
their history.
On the 1811 map (see left) both The Laurels (in
unnumbered area between 65 and 67) and my
property (in 65, originally known as Myrtle
Farm) are shown, but there is no building
between them and nothing that appears to be
any of the farm buildings mentioned before. At
this time it would appear that the eastern side
extension to Hill House (shown in top picture as
1811 map
the area between the two chimney pots and still
recognisable today by a straight line join
between the two parts) had not been erected.
The Tithe Map (right) shows both The
Laurels and Myrtle Farm (which has a farm
building at the eastern end of its plot), plus
a strip of land between them which does
have a building on it and, though this does
seem to be separate from The Laurels, it is
either the farm buildings mentioned
previously or the cottages. It is not obvious,
from the detail shown, to properly reconcile
this building with being the two semidetached cottages which should be side by
side. They, however, are a slightly odd pair,
Tithe Map 1842
one having a window above the front door,
whilst the other does not. One seems to have a door which is rather wider than the
one next door; in fact, about one and a half times the width.

In a town like Axbridge, that could mean that horses are being taken through the
house, as there was rarely a rear entrance which was not almost impossible to
access, but that is patently not needed here. However, there is a line showing
between the two doors and
extending upwards to the
roof.
This may well
indicate that one half is an
extension to a rather
smaller earlier building.
Could the half with the
wider door originally have
been the stable, with the
cider house under the
same roof, as mentioned in
the insurance document
discussed last month, with
the unseen cow house
hidden behind? Perhaps it
was then converted into a dwelling for farm labourers and extended eastwards to
accommodate a second family, with a further extension, as a lean-to, on the end.
By the time of the 1930 map (left) The Laurels does have the farm buildings
discussed above, but with some interesting additions. The Cow House (garages
today) has an extension to the rear
1930 OS map
which is, presumably the Calving shed.
There is also a structure close to the
lane. This can be identified in the
picture above and appears to be within
the boundary of the first cottage, though
its exact usage is not clear. The second
cottage has the lean-to plus a further
structure on its end. Note that Myrtle
Farm is shown to be part of the estate of
The Laurels at this time. Whether that
is accurate, or not, I am uncertain.
None of its more recent extensions have
yet been added, but the outhouses are
probably for pigs, which I understand
were farmed here. Note also that the two cottages lie beyond the rear line of Myrtle
Farm and the boundaries between nearly all the adjoining fields indicate that they are
all part of a single property (shown by the inclusion of a symbol (‫ )ݕ‬placed on the
boundary between them), including the area which has now become the houses of
Portland Place. This also includes a large number of rhines (or rhynes, if you prefer)
running along the edges of most of the fields and dividing the cottages from the cow
sheds. Most of these have been put into conduits today, though the one crossing The
Laurels garden and running along the western end of the cottages is still exposed.

At our meeting in January, Joan Eales, the manager of a Day Centre for
homeless people in Weston-super-Mare, gave an interesting talk about the
Centre, which provides hot meals for the homeless and also advice on
claiming benefits and, where possible, finding accommodation. Many of them
are living in tents. It is hard to believe this is happening in our area.
The Flower of the Month competition was won by Margaret Smith with a daffodil.
The speaker at the meeting on February 11th will be Ruth Jacobs who will speak about
antique jewellery. If any Brent Knoll lady would like to come to this meeting, they would be
most welcome. Just contact Jackie Gilbert on 760 956 for more details.
We are again holding a Soup Lunch on Saturday, 21st February, at the Parish Hall from 12
noon until 1.30. Delicious homemade soups and puddings will be served at a cost of £4.
Tickets available at the door on the day.

Knoll Conservatives - New Year Social
Knoll Conservatives were pleased to hold their New Year Social at
Wascelyn, Brent Street on Saturday 10th January, 7.30pm.
The evening was very well attended with over 50 local residents present, who had the
opportunity to meet and chat with James Heappey the Conservative candidate at the
forthcoming General election and also several local District councillors and our
County councillor.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening and I would like to thank Liz for all her hard
work which went towards a wonderful buffet and also to John and Weit who made the
traditional and extremely tasty Mulled Wine.
A terrific start to a busy year!

Wartime Memories – Part 1
Mr Fred Long interviewed by Brain Freestone
Along with four friends from Burnham, Fred volunteered for the armed services at the
end of 1941. He always wanted to join the Navy but his father wouldn‘t let him. Prior
to this, Fred worked in Wallbutton’s Garage (now a car park) in Burnham as a
mechanic. He attended a medical in Bristol and at the age of eighteen was called up
in February 1942 to serve in the Coastal Forces, which was a separate part of the
Navy. Issued with a railway warrant he travelled to Gosport. Neither Fred nor his
three friends knew where Gosport was since few people travelled far at that time. In
the new but very cold barracks, his first meal was of cold kippers! Later he was
issued with two hammocks, clews and lashings, a palliasse and a blanket but no
uniform. Square bashing came next in his ‘civvies’ and then every day he was taken
on a ‘Trott’ boat (a small vessel for ferrying men to and fro in the harbour) to an old
ship, ’The Sultan’ in Portsmouth Harbour, where he worked in an engineer’s
workshop. There he appreciated the warmth and good food although the tools he
was supplied with were ‘clapped out.’ The Trade Test was laughable but the reason
for it was to see if recruits stuck at the job in hand. Fred did and passed a technical
test on engines. He was issued with a uniform but with no badges. More square
bashing followed at Portsmouth Barracks, followed by an engine training course at
Cobham in Surrey, working on huge 1,200 hp Packard Engines of which there are
three in Motor Torpedo Boats for which he was training. Evenings were spent in
reading up from text books to ensure they passed tests. Portland was the next stop
for more training with power mounted equipment followed by more of the same at
Lowestoft, where he became a crew member of a Motor Torpedo Boat, a ‘seventy
footer.’ Its top speed was 53 knots. From then on the Navy took over. Fred lived
near the old harbour in a bombed out house and meals were served in the ‘Bethel’ an
old church in which Wrens served the food. Fred was allocated to training on MTB
20. He was stunned by the tremendous noise from these engines. No one had
thought to supply ear plugs. On request Fred’s mother sent him a pair of ear plugs
from Boots costing 5 shillings. Using these precious ear plugs, which Fred still owns,
the noise was cut down to a hum. Then the action really started. At 8pm the boat
would go out on patrol in the North Sea. The deafening engines would be switched
off whilst they waited and listened for E boats. One night Fred climbed the ladder and
was amazed to see the coast of Holland, which he had mistaken for that of England.
Burseldon on the River Hamble near Southampton was where he was eventually to
become a crew member of MTB 614, a wooden boat which was being built on the Isle
of Wight at St Helen’s boat yard. “Typical of the Navy,” said Fred, “they trained me on
one and then I was posted to a different one, Type D with four engines and capable of
35 knots” Sea trials took about one month. The crew of thirty were led by a skipper
who was a yachtsman, a solicitor who lived by the River Hamble where MTB 614 was
moored. The crew spent time ‘working up’. - firing guns and testing before they were
allocated to a flotilla in Newhaven. Each night four boats would go out into the
English Channel to the Dutch coast looking for E boats. Coming back in the morning
they would refuel, rest, ready to go out the next night. They saw many E boats
escorting trawlers, which they attacked. Peter Scott was the flotilla leader. Nine
times out of ten, flashes would be seen but the crew had no idea of any damage
having been done.

Kate and Paul are musicians who continue travelling all over the country playing at
Village Halls, Churches and Community Venues. In the past 3 years they created their
‘beautiful music in beautiful places’ Tour, and have been sharing their music and stories,
often meeting friendly and fascinating people and visiting some wonderful, unusual
venues in sometimes remote and always beautiful areas along the way.
They write about life and their observations of it, often poignant, sometimes humorous,
and gathering new material as they travel, captivating an audience in a unique intimate
atmosphere. As contemporary musicians, they enjoy exploring the acoustic sound of
each unique venue and use no effects. Their show has been described as, ‘relaxed and
enchanting’ and ‘an absolute delight’, ‘their joy, talent and good humour were infectious’,
‘music for all ages’.
With a variety of instruments including, guitar, fiddle, mandolin, bodhran and banjo,
superb harmonies and great musicianship, howdenjones will promise to give you a foot
tapping and thought provoking evening with plenty of smiles! You can hear examples of
howdenjones music by visiting www.howdenjones.co.uk.
Food will be available to purchase (just £5) on the night, there will be a choice of Lamb
and watercress bake, Spiced beef bake, Salmon and Prawn pie and Spanakopitta,
served with jacket potato and salad.

The Friends of Burnham on Sea War Memorial Hospital
Have you or a relative or friend ever been at patient in our local hospital? Or used its
outpatient facilities?
The Friends of Burnham Hospital have raised from events, donations and legacies,
nearly £2,000,000. This has been spent on a variety of equipment, as well as the fabric
of the hospital. Some of the major projects include the building of the conservatory, the
purchase and refurbishment of the Peter Holmes Annexe and the provision of a state of
the art Ophthalmic Suite.
The hospital is equipped with the most modern and up to date electronic beds and
mattresses, and an extensive refurbishment took place 2009/10 using £310,000 from
money held by the Friends money and £400,000 from the Trust. The project involved the
Friends working closely with the PCT (Primary Care Trust) to improve patient privacy,
dignity, security and infection control.
In addition, the Friends have paid for many items, including patient dining room furniture
and awnings above ward windows. Newspapers and maintenance of the gardens are
paid for on a regular basis.
In the current economic environment, we are keen to increase our membership to show
that local people value their local hospital. By joining The Friends you are contributing to
the future of your hospital in the community. Fund raising events are organised and run
on a strictly voluntary basis, so there is no compulsion for any member to become
actively involved in these.
Please join us and encourage your friends to do the same for a subscription of £5 a year,
payable annually by standing order. Alternatively you may simply wish to make a one-off
donation.
For more information about the Friends and how to contact us, please see our website
www.friendsofburnhamhospital.org, or contact our Secretary, Eileen Shaw on 780 733 or

Be thankful you have a wonderful village pub!
I am a recent arrival in the village as a permanent resident and frequenting public
houses has not been a key part of my previous existence. However as age
diminishes ones social circle and physical frailty reduces the sporting activities one
can partake of, sadly options are reduced…and after declining numerous offers, I
finally agreed and went to the Red Cow…not for the purpose of a meal but simply to
have a drink.
Being of an age where having a comfortable chair, something interesting to listen to
or watch, a warm fire and a glass of wine is considered to make a good evening, I
was not sure what I had expected. Certainly it wasn’t the warm welcome or the level
of banter and village humour ….which could have been even more fun if I actually had
known all of the people concerned!
This revelation made me realise that too many people must live in the village and
overlook the pub, which is a great shame. As my son said, a good village needs a
village shop, a milkman, a school and a pub to be a proper village. (I would include
an active Church too!!)
Having crossed the threshold as a drinker rather than as an eater, I also attended the
New Year Eve celebrations, where previously I had said I would prefer to be at home
to see the New Year in (so boring!!); the firework display was absolutely brilliant and
the New Year Spirit as abundant as that being poured on the other side of the bar!
I may have left it late to experience the fun of leaving a pub in the early hours in the
company of a group of likeminded party goers, but the few friends I have still capable
of traversing the country to visit, are going to find me recommending to them that we
go to the pub.
Cheap supermarket alcohol and drinking at home has killed off many pubs. Before it
probably didn’t really register with me, but a village really does benefit by having a
good pub at its heart…so be thankful you have one – and make use of it!!

Gracie Wickens-Sweet and the Coastline Singers
Book now to avoid disappointment! On Saturday 25th April there will be a concert in
Brent Knoll Parish Hall, featuring Gracie Wickens-Sweet and the Coastline Singers.
Gracie has hit the headlines many times, most recently as the winner of Burnham’s
Got Talent 2014, and she has been given rave reviews in national competitions by
such stars as Connie Fisher and David Mahoney.
The Coastline Singers need no introduction as our local popular choir, and they will,
as usual, invite the audience to join in with some well-known numbers from the
Musicals.
The evening will include music from Abba, country, pop and musical theatre: a lovely
mix and an evening for all to enjoy.
Tickets available from February.

Just for Fun - Why Men Will Never Be Agony Aunts
Dear Roger,
I hope you can help me.
The other day, I set off for work leaving my husband at home watching television.
I had only driven for about a mile when my engine conked out and the car shuddered
to a halt.
I walked back to get my husband’s help, but when I got home I could not believe my
eyes – he was in the bedroom with our neighbour’s daughter!
I am 32, my husband 34, the neighbour’s daughter 20.
We have been married for ten years.
When I confronted him, he broke down and admitted they had been having an affair
for some time.
I told him to stop, otherwise I would leave him. He was made redundant recently and
says he has been feeling increasingly depressed and worthless.
I love him very much, but since I gave him the ultimatum, he has become more
distant; he won’t go to counselling and I cannot get through to him anymore.
Please let me have your advice.
Yours sincerely,
Sheila
Dear Sheila
A car stalling after it has been driven a short distance can be caused by a variety of
faults with the engine. Start by checking that there is no debris in the fuel line; if it is
clear, check the vacuum pipes and hoses on the intake manifold and examine all
grounding wires. If none of these approaches solves the problem, it could be that the
fuel pump itself is faulty, causing low delivery pressure to the injectors.
I hope this helps.
Yours sincerely,
Roger

Brent Knoll Weather Report – December 2014
December brought an unexceptional end to an exceptional year. The
average temperature for the month was a mild 6.4°C (46°F) with no
unusual highs or lows, rainfall was about normal at 63.4mm (2.5in), and
wind speeds were nothing out of the ordinary either.
The only unusual feature of December was an intense area of high
pressure that brought a cold, clear spell at the end of the month. The
barometer reached 1042.9hPa on 29th December, the second highest
reading since the station was set up. The temperature at dawn that day
fell to -5.3°C (22°F), the lowest temperature of the year, and for a couple
of days it was completely calm here while snow caused problems in the north of the
UK.
For much of December we were in a mild south-westerly airstream, hence that aboveaverage temperature, and low pressure systems passed well to our north so we
avoided the rain and gales that affected northern areas. One exception was a
particularly deep low that tracked south-east across Wales on Boxing Day – it was
heading on our direction, but then it moved off across the midlands and the only effect
here was a blustery wind.
If December was uneventful, the same cannot be said of 2014. The year started with
the wettest Winter on record, and January’s total of 157.8mm (6.2in) makes that by
far our wettest month. Coming after a wet Autumn, this resulted in the lengthy floods
that brought misery to the Levels. The low pressure systems that brought the rain
also generated gales, perhaps the most memorable being on St Valentine’s Day – we
recorded our highest-ever gust of 46.1kts (53mph) early on 15th February. The lows
were warm as well as wet, and the Winter of 2013/4 was remarkably mild - January
saw only two air frosts, and February none at all.
Spring was warm and wet, adding to the rainfall total, and to a succession of warmerthan-average months. Then came our warmest June on record and even if July didn’t
quite match 2013’s heat, it was yet another warm month - with some spectacular
thunderstorms.
August bucked the trend by being unseasonably cool, but September and October
both produced record high temperatures for the time of year. September was
remarkably calm with persistent high pressure, while October produced another
rainfall total over the 100mm mark.
November and December were unexceptional, though November was the fourth
month in 2014 to top 100mm. Even so, the rainfall total of 973.6mm (38.3in) for 2014
was some way short of 2012’s record 1008.2mm. The mean temperature for the year
was 11.6C (53°F), about 1C above normal, and this made 2014 our warmest year on
record: but only just, because in 2011 the average was 11.5C.
With floods and gales, thunderstorms and heatwaves – it may be a while before we
see another year like 2014.

More Ramblings of a Rambler
Rumour has it that the County Council have footpaths on the agenda
for financial cut backs. We, in Brent Knoll, are well served when it
comes to footpaths. I do not think there is a house in the Village
situated more than one hundred yards from one. If it does happen
that the village is totally responsible for the upkeep of the footpaths,
then we can all do our little bit to help out by carrying a pair of secateurs to enable the
removal of the odd bramble. Any obstructions on the footpaths should be moved to
the side, but if these are too big to handle, then notify the footpath officer. Do not
leave unwanted dog toys in fields that can be bailed up into hay; these could harm the
animals being fed on the hay or could damage machinery while making hay. Now
that we have a lot of gates on the footpaths instead of stiles, please make sure that
these are closed behind you.
Squirrels continue to be the most spotted mammal with rabbits close behind. Although
not all rabbits seen have been alive, the dreaded myxomatosis has arrived again. It
seems that as soon as we get wet weather, this disease comes back, which leads me to
suspect that the burrows and warrens, where the rabbits go in bad weather, are still
infected. Another sighting was a fox seen early afternoon. Reynard must be hungry if he
