The Beacon - The Anglican Parish of Rockingham

The Beacon
In a song based upon this Psalm the author, Christopher Idle sums up the
promise and the challenge with these words:
“Salvation is from God
In times of blatant wrong,
And those who seek His shelter find
A refuge safe and strong.
So fully trust in Him ;
Shun evil, follow right ;
He gives you all your heart’s desire
When He is your delight.”

Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany
Anglican Parish of Rockingham-Safety Bay
Dear Friends,
A very warm welcome to you all today.
At 10 a.m. we are glad to welcome family and friends of Drew and Julia Walsh
and Trevor and Sarah Turnbull as we share in the baptism of Isla and Megan.
The baptism of infants is based upon the words of the apostle Peter who, on the
day of Pentecost said “the promise is for you and your children and for all who
are far off – for whom the Lord our God will call” (Acts 2.39). Upon the
profession of faith of at least one parent (1 Cor. 7.14) we baptise children and
administer the outward sign of baptism – water, and pray that in time, God the
Holy Spirit will be pleased to work inwardly in our children to bring them to
Jesus in repentance and faith.
So apart from providing an opportunity to remember our own profession of
faith in Jesus as our Saviour and Lord we pray for these children (that they too
will own Jesus as their Lord and Saviour) and for their parents (that they will
demonstrate the Christian way and do all they can to prayerfully encourage their
children to follow Christ).
As a church our responsibility is to welcome these children and their families,
to pray for them and live as Godly examples with them.
Today’s Psalm, 37 is full of encouragement to “take delight in the Lord” (4).
The writer offers us many good reasons why we can delight in Him and outlines
the many blessings God bestows upon those who do.
Tonight at 5 p.m. we will continue to unpack Psalm 37 as we look at ways to
overcome fretting, anger, anxiety and the like. Opportunity for questions.
With best wishes in Christ,
Peter.
Collect
Father of all, who gave your only – begotten Son to take upon Himself the form
of a servant and to be obedient even to death on a cross: give us the same mind
that was in Christ Jesus, that, sharing in His humility, we may come to be with
Him in His glory; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one
God, now and for ever. Amen.
