4-H SLO SCIENTIST NEWS
Start the New Year off with an Exciting New Project:
Be a 4-H SLO Scientist!
Beginning in late January and early February, several new 4-H SLO Scientist groups will be forming throughout
San Luis Obispo County,
to include Los Osos, San Luis Obispo,
and Santa Margarita. If you’re in 3rd’,
4th, 5th, or 6th grade and enjoy science
and hands-on activities, then you’ll love
the SLO Scientist program.
You’ll come with your parent, or other favorite adult, and participate together
as a science team with other youth and
adults to form a small group of science
teams who have fun “doing science” together. Each group is led by a wonderful 4
-H SLO Scientist Volunteer Facilitator.
Joining a SLO Scientist group is a terrific
way for families to connect by participating in fun and worthwhile activities together and learning about the world
around you!
For more information about joining
a SLO Scientist project, further
details about the program, and to
reserve a space in one of our local
groups, please contact Heather Dauer,
4-H SLO Scientist Project Coordinator,
at 781-5943.

4-H GOAT EXPO
The first ever Goat Expo was held on December 7th at the Santa Margarita KOA Campground. This
multi-county event was hosted by the Santa Margarita 4-H Club. Tracy Johnston and Kim Morones organized the day. 81 4-H’ers and 51 parents attended this fun event. There were many great presenters
including Jan Edwards on Goat Care, Mitchell Schulte and Cindy Youngquist on Market Goats (conformation,
showmanship and feeding), Cindy Lindquist on Dairy Goat Showmanship, Colleen Childers on Dairy Goat
Confirmation, Kristen Bruce on Equipment, and Kathy Vieira on the Milking Process. A goat bowl of
knowledge, led by the County All-Stars, a hot-dog lunch, fun games, and lots of prizes were also included.
Thank you to everyone who helped the day run so smoothly, especially Clint Thomas and the Santa Margarita Goat group members and parents. A fun and educational day was had by all!

2014-2015 EMERALD STAR PROJECT
2014 — 2015
EMERALD STAR PROJECT
(See 4th Paragraph for this month’s needs)
Our first donation was delivered to the SLO Women’s Shelter on November 21st! The
Women’s Shelter was very grateful for the support of 4-H. Special thanks to Pozo 4-H and Huasna
Valley 4-H for all their generous donations!
As the 4-H year progresses, we’ll continue to support the SLO Women’s Shelter, which is a nonprofit
organization committed to providing shelter for victims of domestic violence and child abuse and helping them get a
new start (see more at http://www.womensshelterslo.org/). This is a great opportunity for all the 4-H members
in San Luis Obispo County to give of themselves and see how much their generosity benefits those in need!
Donations can include: non-perishable food items, toiletries (toothbrushes & toothpaste,
toilet paper, shampoo, conditioner, soap, etc.), pet food, towels, craft supplies (glue, stickers,
beads, buttons, scrapbook paper, feathers, shells, pebbles, etc), laundry detergent, small kitchen
appliances (dishes, silverware, pots & pans, glasses, microwaves, toasters, etc.), used cell phones,
new bedding (pillows, blankets, sheets, etc.) and clothing/household/craft/grocery store gift cards.
The Women’s Shelter has specific need for the following items this month: deodorant, diapers (sizes 5 & 6), bars of soap, toothpaste, and toothbrushes. Community
Club Leaders or 4-H members may drop off items at the tub provided at the County 4-H Office.
The deadline to bring items into the 4-H office for the February donation is January 30th, 2014.
If you have any questions about this project, please contact Olivia Snodgrass of Huasna Valley 4H
at the email address of: [email protected]

SCIENCE, ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY (S.E.T.)

Wondering what to do with all the holiday time off from school?

Looking for projects to do inside during the short days of winter?

Planning club activities for next year?

Thinking about a subject for Presentation Day in February?

Just can’t wait to get started on that science entry for 4-H Field Day?....
4-H has many resources to explore for answering any of these questions or giving you ideas for
questions you didn’t know you had. 4-H has many Science, Engineering , and Technology activities you
and your 4-H club could explore, expand on, share at school, turn into a community project, bring to
Presentation Day, or as a Poster entry at 4-H Field Day.
As an example check out what 4-H has developed with National Geographic about the exploring the
Mysteries of the Unseen World under the More Science Resources tab at the Website:
http://www.4-h.org/youth-development-programs/4-h-science-programs/engineering-technology/
You will find educator Guides, Activity work sheets, and posters, videos and other images of things in
our world that you may not know are there. Understand the engineering and science behind how we
can see more than we can with just our eyes.
How about those flying critters looking for food in your backyard this winter. Can you identify all the
birds you see in your yard or during a holiday trip?. Do you know that 4-H and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology have partnered on a Citizen Science project that teaches you how to support the lab in tracking
the birds in the United States? Your observations can be added to observations from all around the nation to help the lab track birds in a changing habitat. Learn more about Bird Sleuthing and the activities
available at the WEB site: http://nys4h.cce.cornell.edu/resources/Documents/LabofO-%204H%
20Quest%20booklet-2.pdf.
Recently the SLO Scientist Facilitator Team attended a workshop presented by the Cornell Lab and
U.C. Cooperative Extension about the Bird Sleuth Citizen Science project and what makes for good bird
habitat. We met other 4-H leaders and youth and all learned about how easy it is to share what you see
and learn from what others have observed about birds in our region. Please contact the 4-H Office if
you are interested in materials to get involved with Cornell project and learn more about the birds that
live in San Luis Obispo County or just come to visit.
Looking forward to more science Engineering and Technology activities in 2015.

4-H HORSE PROJECT — WESTERN TRAIL CLINIC
The rain cleared and the sun peaked through the clouds, so about fifteen 4-H Horse County Project
Members could participate in a Western Trail Clinic held at Patty Knudson Training Stables in Paso
Robles. 4-Hers tried their best to scrape off the mud from their ponies and horses, tack up, and
mount to learn some Western Trail riding skills. Riders learned techniques on walk, trot, and lope,
as well as backing. Then, they took to the course and practiced backing between poles, while others played beach ball polo and worked on balance with the hat hand-off and side by side pole
hold. Much Thanks goes to Michelle Mitchell and Laurie Ridgeway, Creston 4-H, for coordinating
this very fun day! Submitted by Amber Quick, Cerro Alto 4-H

At the November meeting of the Cerro Alto Dairy Goat Group, we had a goat body parts
presentation by Aiden. Everyone participated by putting the correct body parts on the goat. Then
we split up into two groups. One group studied for level testing. The other did a goat judging
activity. It was tons of fun.
