I understand that if I am a shooting sports volunteer, I am expected to openly carry/transport 4-H shooting sports equipment in designated areas.” Wisconsin has a law allowing residents to carry a concealed weapon with a permit. However, in accordance with University of Wisconsin policy, employees and volunteers are prohibited from carrying weapons, concealed or otherwise, even with a valid permit, while performing their volunteer role. Certified leaders in Shooting Sports have an exception and can open carry only, and only when performing the functions of their Shooting Sports volunteer role. New Procedure for Courthouse Doors Please park in the front parking lot of the Courthouse for all night meetings from now on! Effective immediately, the back doors (upper/east side) will be locked every night by 5:30 p.m. The front doors (lower/west side) will be unlocked ONLY when there are scheduled meetings. On scheduled meeting nights, those doors will be locked by 8:00 p.m. Consistent with the Americans With Disabilities Act, persons who need materials in alternative format or other accommodations must write or call the UWExtension contact person for the specific program or call the main telephone number of the Rock County University of Wisconsin – Extension Office, at (608) 757-5696, at least ten (10) working days prior to the event. You’ll find many helpful 4-H people along the way who have much to offer…just ask around! 2 Club Happenings Leadership Lima 4-H News The Lima 4-H had a busy holiday season. They kicked off November by heading to the Whitewater food pantry and bagged almost 200 food baskets. In December they spent the afternoon at Heartstone singing for the residents and then made their way to Pizza Hut for a small get together. A week later the members and leaders went back to the food pantry and bagged close to 150 food baskets. The potatoes and onions for both baskets were donated by a club family and the chairman. Junior Council Meeting February 23 7:30 p.m. - UW-Rock County Attention, all 4-H members grade 7 and up! You are invited to the next Junior Council meeting to meet new friends, learn about leadership opportunities, and have fun. Be there…don’t miss out on the fun! *Note: We are meeting at UW-Rock County immediately following the Communications Arts Festival that starts at 5:30 p.m. If you are participating, plan to stay for the meeting. Bradford 4-H News In December we had the kringle fundraiser sale. Also club members made fleece tied blankets and hand delivered them to the residents at Alden Meadow Park Nursing home in Clinton. At the January meeting we had a collection for a local food pantry. It’s scholarship time—senior students need to complete forms, and college students need to submit 1st semester grades. Reporter- Molly Kemp Senior Council Meeting February 23 7:30 p.m. - UW-Rock County All club chairs, co-chairs, and any interested leaders are invited and encouraged to attend Senior Council meetings. Senior Council meetings are usually held the fourth Monday of the month (except July and December) at the Courthouse. The date for February is Monday, February 23 at 7:30 p.m. This meeting is being held in conjunction with the 4-H Communication Arts Festival at UW-Rock County, so come early and listen to some of our talented 4-H public speakers! Center 4-H News In December the Center 4-H club rang bells for Salvation Army, donated to the Children's Christmas Benefit, and took part in the Orfordville Lighted Holiday Parade. At the December meeting the members made crafts to take home and made Christmas cards for the VA hospital in Madison. They also brought in food for the CUP food pantry and had a cookie walk with all money going to CUP as well. Wisconsin 4-H Youth Protection Program In 2014-2015 we will again be complying with the Wisconsin 4-H Youth Protection Program. Leaders who completed the leader application form and attended a leader orientation session need only to re-enroll with their club this year. (All leaders must enroll via 4hOnline.) River Valley 4-H News December Report 2014: To kick off the holiday spirit we had a very festive meeting. We had many yummy snacks and beverages. The main highlight of the meeting was the gift exchange. We each got very cool presents. Other than that we had several games with friends. At this meeting we all had a good laugh. For community service, many club members participated in bell ringing for the Salvation Army. Adult Chaperone Application for State and National Trips If you enjoy working with teens, collaborating with others as part of a unified leadership team, and experiencing another part of the country, consider applying to serve as an Adult Advisor to Space Camp in Huntsville, AL; Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) at Washington, D.C.; or National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, GA. Leaders, please be sure you complete all the requirements to be in compliance! This year, all 4-H leaders MUST be enrolled through 4-H Online (https://wi.4honline.com/) no later than March 1, 2015, in order to be eligible for a discounted pass to the Rock County Fair. You must also have completed the Youth Protection Process (see previous article) by that date. Real Colors Workshop – Adult Learning Opportunity March 21 Have you ever worked on a team with people who approached work differently than you do? Do you find yourself wondering what their perspective is? Whether it be an Advisory Board, project committee, or even organizing with families for snack duty, you will always be working with others who approach things differently. One of the best ways to work efficiently in a team is to communicate thoroughly and understand where other people’s strengths come from. At the Real Colors Workshop you will: Understand human behavior, Uncover motivators specific to each temperament, Improve communication with others. Call for County Leaders Some clubs have leaders without project members, or members without project leaders. If you are interested in being a county leader in your project in addition to a club leader, please call the UWEX Office to let us know. A county leader would be available to all clubs and be responsible for additional workshops or programs in the 4-H project. Volunteer Tax Deductions A number of tax benefits are available for volunteers under the general charitable deduction of the Internal Revenue Code. Volunteers may deduct unreimbursed, out-ofpocket expenses directly related to a charitable organization such as 4-H if they itemize deductions for 2014. See IRS Publication 526 at www.irs.gov/. Click on “Forms and Pubs” and then “Current Forms and Pubs”. The workshop is facilitated by your local trained Extension Educators. Training will be held on Saturday, March 21 at St. William's School cafeteria, 1822 Ravine Street, Janesville, from 9:00 a.m. to noon, and the cost is $10 per person. It is available to the first 25 adults who register. It will include networking, coffee, snacks, and ah-ha moments. Register by calling the UWEX office at 757-5696 to reserve your spot now. Full House Rock County 4-H offers open enrollment, so new members may join any time during the year. If your club does not have room for new members, please call the UWEX Office so we can consider this when doing club referrals for new families. If your club is closed, you need to be consistent and not allow anyone else to join for the remainder of the current 4-H year. Clubs cannot choose or vote on who can be members Special Projects & Activities Wisconsin Judge Application for County Fairs Have you ever wanted to be a judge at county fairs? Think you have enough expertise to crown the champion and best of class? Always wondered how to start? This year’s camp will be three nights: Wednesday, August 12 to Saturday, August 15. Watch future newsletters for more details, registration, and information on how to become 4-H Camp Staff!! 4 erone. The positions will be filled first-come, first-served and based on the number of youth registrations. All adults will be contacted after February 6 whether or not they are selected as chaperones. Adults not selected may still participate in the trip if there is room on the bus, and they must pay for their own ticket. Junior Council 4-H Ski-Trip Friday, February 27 Cascade Mountain, Portage Registration Deadline February 6 (must be in the UWEX Office by this date) The Junior Council Planning Committee invites all Rock County 4-H members 7th grade and up to join in the fun at the ski trip to Cascade Mountain. Please note that this trip is for 4-H members only. All participants are required to ride the bus. The group will leave at 8:30 a.m. sharp from the back parking lot at the Janesville Courthouse. They will finish skiing at 4:00 p.m. and return to Janesville at approximately 5:45 p.m. Put February 27 on your calendar, and if you have any questions, contact Megan at 757-5696! Bowling Bonanza Huge Success The Jr. Council Bowling Bonanza held on December 26 at Rivers Edge was a huge success. We had a great turn-out with 87 youth between the ages of 6 and 19, representing 18 clubs! Jr. Council provided soda and door prizes that were drawn throughout the afternoon, and four grand prizes were given at the end of the event. Thanks to the committee members and chaperones for another great event! This year’s group rate is $20 with or without equipment and includes lift ticket, ski equipment rental, helmet, and 90-minute ski or snowboard lesson. (Snowboarding will be allowed only if you have your own equipment. All snowboards must have a leash.) Skiers are highly encouraged to take the free lessons!! Skiing is a lot more fun and safe if you know the basics. 4-H Volleyball Tournaments - March 15 and 22 Attention, Clubs: The registration deadline is March 2 for the 2015 4-H Volleyball Tournaments. Get your team together and sign up to play at Craig High School on March 15 for junior teams and March 22 for seniors. Teams should report no later than 12:30 p.m. Play will begin at 1:00 p.m. Jr. Council provides the transportation and insurance. For the noon meal, please choose one of the following: bring a sack lunch; pre-register for a $7 lunch voucher (choice of hot dog, Ham/Ch burger, or corn dog, with fries and choice of milk or regular size fountain drink); or bring money to buy lunch in the resort cafeteria. The phone number for Cascade Mountain is 608-742-5588. 4-H Basketball Tournament We are pleased to announce that a basketball tournament is being planned for April 12! New this year, both the senior tournament and junior tournament will be the same day. Information was handed out at the January Senior Council Meeting. If you would like to referee or volunteer, please call the Extension Office at 757-5696. To register for the ski trip: 1. Complete the registration form found at the back of this newsletter or on the 4-H website, http:// fyi.uwex.edu/4hrock/4hactivities/. 2. READ CAREFULLY, print out, and sign the Minor Rental Waiver form, found at http:// www.cascademountain.com/waivers-forms. 3. Return the above with your total payment to the UWEX office. The registration deadline is February 6. Registration is open to the first 40 youth on a first-come firstserved basis. People will be placed on a waiting list if the bus is full. We must have at least 25 kids sign up. 4. Your Health Form on https://wi.4honline.com/ must be up-to-date too. Club Fundraising If your club would like an opportunity to sell concessions at the volleyball tournament, basketball tournament, or Music & Drama Festival, please call the UWEX office or come to Senior Council. Porkfest Fundraising If your club is interested in selling desserts at the annual Pork Producer’s Porkfest, please call the UWEX office at 757-5696 by March 16. After this deadline, the Pork Producers will randomly draw four clubs from the list who may sell desserts as a fundraiser. Even if your club has served in the past, please sign up to put your name on the potential club list. Adult chaperones are needed, and their registration fee will be paid by Jr. Council. We must have one adult (age 21 or older) for every 10 youth, or the trip will be canceled. Chaperones with skiing ability are preferred. Adults willing to chaperone must return their registration by February 6. Returning the form does not guarantee selection as a chap5 International Opportunities Communication & Cultural Arts Communication Arts Festival Get your posters, creative writings, and speaking presentations ready, and mark your calendars! The Communication Arts Festival is coming! It will be held again on the UW-Rock County campus, 2909 Kellogg Ave, Janesville, on Monday, February 23, starting at 5:45 p.m. Junior and Senior Council meetings will also be held that evening at 7:30 p.m. at UW-Rock. ¡Hola! Konnichiwa! Hei! Annyeong! Add a great big handful of excitement to your home next summer by hosting an Argentine, Mexican, Japanese, Norwegian, or South Korean young person for one month! Summer 4-week international host opportunities include: - Argentine youth 15-19 years old, approx. June 24-July 18. - Japan/South Korean youth 12-15 years old, July 26Aug. 22 - Mexico youth 12-18 years old, approximately July 1-30. - Norwegian 4-H’ers mostly 16-18 years old. Plan ahead to host an international student for the 2015-16 school year from Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Moldova, and other Eurasian countries or the Asian countries of Japan or South Korea. If you have enjoyed a short term hosting experience or love working with students from other cultures, consider hosting a Japanese or Eurasian student through the C.S.I.E.T. approved 4-H/ Japan, South Korea, or Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) High School Programs. Students arrive in August and depart in June. Requirements include having a genuine interest, being flexible and willing to spend time with the student, and having an extra bed available (not necessarily an extra room). All adults in the family must complete the Wisconsin 4-H Youth Protection program including background check. Previous hosting experience is not required. A host brother or sister of high school age is not a prerequisite, and young or retired couples involved as 4-H leaders are also urged to apply. The application deadline is February 15. Created for 4-H members in grades 3-5 and their parents and leaders, 4-H ArtBeat! is the introductory program for Wisconsin 4-H Arts and Communication! ArtBeat! South will be held March 20 and 21, at our State 4-H Camp, Upham Woods in the Wisconsin Dells. The weekend will feature a look at a variety of Arts projects including music, drama, visual arts, arts and crafts, juggling and more! 4-H members will explore their own creativity while discovering the great variety of 4-H Arts & Communication experiences available to them now and in the near future. Session leaders will be 4-H older youth, adult leaders, and 4-H staff members with a wealth of experience to share. Youth and adult participants will rotate through a variety of sessions which are hands-on and active and held throughout camp, including outdoors. Both youth and adult participants stay in the cabins on cabin hill. The application deadline is February 20. 6 Market Steers, Barrows, & Lambs ID The Rock County 4-H Fair is again requiring RFID tags and DNA samples from each livestock animal. Individuals who have identified animals for State Fair may use the State Fair ID; however, you will still need to have a DNA sample on file. Please see page 11 in the “Fair Facts” section of this Cloverpatch issue for detailed information. 4-H Music & Drama Festival May 9 Here's your club’s opportunity to shine on stage at the 2015 4-H Music & Drama Festival. You will again be performing on the Kirk Denmark Theatre stage in the Wells Cultural Center on the UW-Rock County campus. Please mark your calendars and join this fun opportunity to share your talents. 2015 Wisconsin State Fair Market Animal Identification New for 2015! Youth interested in showing market beef, sheep or swine at the 2015 Wisconsin State Fair will need to get their animal projects DNA/RFID identified through the Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium (WLIC) by the respective Wisconsin State Fair eligibility deadlines. To obtain a DNA/RFID request form go to the Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium website at http:// www.wiid.org/county-fair-dna-id-project. June 17 (3rd Wednesday of June) for those wishing to enter online and pay with a credit/debit card. Foods Revue 2015 Registration Mark your calendar for Saturday, April 11th. Foods Revue will be held at the Craig Center on the Rock County 4-H Fairgrounds. All members enrolled in the Foods project are eligible to enter. MAQA Trainings Meat Animal Quality Assurance (MAQA) is a mandatory training for EVERY youth who wishes to show swine at the county fair OR State Fair. All ages have the opportunity to take the class which will certify you for one year. Ages 12 and older as of January 1, 2015, will also have a test-out option where certification lasts for up to three years. MAQA fulfills the requirements for Pork Quality Assurance (PQA). Members who show in beef and sheep may become certified, but it is mandatory for swine exhibitors. Animal Science Area Animal Science Days in Rock County Rock County has been selected to host Area Animal Science Days for the Southeast region Thursday, June 18 at the Rock County Fairgrounds. However, we need youth and adults to help plan and volunteer for the day! More info will be in upcoming newsletters, but mark the date on your calendar now if you are interested in helping! Dog Project Orientation and Training The first Dog project meeting of the year will be on March 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the Craig Center on the fairgrounds. All 4-H dog project members, junior leaders, adult leaders, and parents are strongly encouraged to attend. This orientation meeting will address expectations, rules, and project changes, as well as introductions of the trainers. Please do NOT bring your dogs to this meeting. Dog Project Fundraiser As a fundraiser, the 4-H Dog Project will be hosting the Belgian Tervuren Dog Show on March 6, 7, and 8 at the Rock County Fairgrounds. Set-up for the show will occur after the meeting on March 5. Anyone who can stay after the orientation meeting and help with set-up will be greatly appreciated. As host, the Dog Project is in charge of the food stand. Please bring baked goods, soda, or other food items to sell during the show. Pre-Fair Cat Show April 4 The Rock County 4-H Pre-Fair Cat Show will be held in the Craig Center at the Fairgrounds. Checkin time is 8:00 - 9:30 a.m., and the show starts at 9:45 a.m. with dress-a-cat. You can begin your showmanship test and interview at 8 a.m. The entry fee is $10 for one cat and $5 for each additional cat, and entries are limited to four cats. Other classes you can enter are: poster or display, photography, drawing and painting, decorate a cage, and dress-a-cat at no extra cost. County Cat Project Meeting February 17 7:00 p.m. Craig Center, Fairgrounds Come and join Cat project members and leaders from around the county to learn more about proper grooming of your cat. Cat Project Vaccine Clinic February 17 5:00-6:45 p.m. There will be a vaccine clinic for project animals from 5:00 – 6:45 p.m., prior to the February 17th Cat project meeting at the Craig Center at the fairgrounds. This clinic is for Cat project animals only, and members must sign up ahead of time like last year. Members will be able to have their project animals examined and vaccinated for distemper and rabies for a low cost. All animals must be in a carrier. RFID identification tags, identification documentation forms, and DNA sample submission envelopes are available for pick up starting March 7, 2015 at the Stock Pavilion, or starting March 9, 2015 at the Rock County 4-H Fair Office. Attention, Club Chairpersons Premium Book Pick Up The 2015 Rock County 4-H Fair Premium Books will be available for pick up starting February 23rd. The books can be picked up during regular business hours at the Fair Secretary’s Office on the fairgrounds or from 5-7 before the February Sr. Council Meeting. The exhibitor and/or project leader must self-identify his/ her animals by placing the official Rock County 4-H Fair RFID tag in the animal’s ear, collecting a DNA hair sample, and completing the animal identification documentation form. DNA samples, with the identification documentation must be returned to Rock County 4-H Fair Office no later than May 8, 2015. Online Fair Entries The Rock County 4-H Fair entries will be completed online by all exhibitors for the 2015 Rock County 4-H Fair. More information will be coming soon. Animals must be identified in the exhibitor’s name or in an immediate family member’s name. If animals are identified in the immediate family name, all siblings’ names MUST appear on the top of the form. Family identified animals need only to submit one form and pay for one DNA sample per animal identified. Youth who fill out an individual form can only show the animals identified on the form; they will not be eligible to show their siblings’ animals if they are not identified in the family name. Cousins are not considered immediate family and may not co-identify the same animal. Queen Participates at Wisconsin Fairest Contest The 2014 Rock County 4-H Queen, Kristen Broege, participated in the Wisconsin Fairest of the Fair Competition held during the Wisconsin Association of Fairs Convention at the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells, January 4-7. Kristen was one of 41 candidates competing for the 2015 Wisconsin Fairest of the Fair title. Kristen did a great job representing the youth of Rock County at the Wisconsin Association of Fairs Convention and Fairest contest. The cost for each animal tag is $2.50 and each DNA sample card is $2.50. Exhibitors are responsible for payment on all issued tags, sample cards used, and any unused that are not turned back in. Any unused tags and sample cards must be returned to the Fair Office. A credit will be issued for unused tags and cards. Completed identification documents and DNA sample cards will only be accepted with full payment. Have you signed up for the Communication Arts Festival ? There is still time to join the FUN! Students who will graduate from high school in spring 2015, as well as 2014 high-school graduates who currently are in their first year of post-secondary school, are eligible.
