Allfarthing School Bulletin 30th January 2015 Dear Parents/Carers Mathletics The winner this week is year 3 Polar Bear class. Well done to Miss Flower’s class, great work. RE Day - Judaism On Friday 16th January, the whole school took part in our first themed R.E. day on the subject of Judaism. Eagle and Penguin classes enjoyed a day of enquiry at the Jewish Museum in London, where they took part in a workshop and had time to explore the museum. The rest of the school considered topics such as famous Jewish people in history, Jewish festivals and comparing Judaism to other world faiths. Our next R.E. day on Judaism will be on Friday 13th March 2015. 5. If anyone knows of anyone in the Jewish community in Wandsworth who might be happy to talk about their faith (either to a class or in an assembly), please could you let Mr. Goodall know. Music Update As you may know, many of our music lessons from October have been supported by our music specialist, Miss Leadbetter. She continues to work this term with Nursery, Year 1 and Year 6 and has now been joined by an outstanding, nationally renowned music teacher teacher called Steve Grocott who works with Reception, Year 2 and Year 4 every Tuesday as well as leading music assemblies for KS1 and KS2. Mr Grocott is well known for his creative music making and has published several books for use with primary-aged primary children. You can find out more about him and his band, The Drones, at www.dronesmusic.net. Year 3 wowed us with their recorder and djembe skills in a concert on the 7th January and we look forward to the their next performance at the end of this term. Finally, Year 5 have started rehearsals with the Music Service for this year's Brighter Sounds concert at the Royal Festival Hall in March and are already sounding fantastic. We also welcome Jake Long to our team te of instrumental teachers this term as our drum kit teacher, Steve Ashmore, is taking some time out to travel with his family. He will be teaching on Fridays, not Thursdays as last term. Meanwhile, the search for a permanent music teacher goes on with a round of recruitment currently underway. Sporting Update Our sporting diary kicks off next week with a mixed football match at Sacred Heart on Wednesday 4th. Good luck to the Allfarthing team. Bulletin No. 91 PTO January 2015 Request for more Parent Helpers – Reading Squad We would love it if you could volunteer to join our reading squad to support children’s reading and language across the school. If you are available a couple of afternoons a week on a regular basis from 3-3.30pm we would appreciate your skills and time. The children who currently read with parents love the experience. It really helps to develop their reading skills, and also their confidence and self-esteem. The possible roles are: • Listen to individual children read to give them more practise reading and discussing the texts • Read picture book stories to small groups of children who may be learning English as an additional language, discussing the story and language used • Story telling from your own culture or background Training and advice will be given. If you are interested please collect a form from reception. Finally could we please remind all parents that we are a NUT free school and have a number of children with severe nut allergies. Please do not send in any foods that contain nuts for packed lunches, mid morning snacks or our monthly cake stalls. Any recycling materials should also come from nut free products, no crunchy nut cornflake boxes.
