THE GATHERING
The congregation is asked to use the time of the Voluntary
as a period of silent prayer and preparation.
THE ORGAN VOLUNTARY
Cornet Voluntary
SILENT PRAYER OF PREPARATION
Lord of fierce compassion,
You name the forces of death
in our hearts and institutions
and even in the holy places:
lift from us the canopy of fear
that feeds on repression
and pushes away
what it cannot abide;
go with us to dark and lonely places
where we can learn again
who we are called to be;
through Jesus Christ, the healer of creation.
William Walond

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
(Please sign the Worship Register and pass it on to your neighbor.)
*OPENING SENTENCES
from Isaiah 40
One: Have you not known? Have you not heard?
All: The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
One: He does not faint or grow weary;
his understanding is unsearchable.
All: Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength,
One: They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
All: They shall run and not be weary,
they shall walk and not faint.
*HYMN 401

Gather Us In
*PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God, You are everlasting,
the source of all that is.
Your understanding is beyond measure.
We confess to You that we have
sinned against You and our neighbors.
In Your compassion, forgive us,
for we place our hope in Your steadfast love.

with one another, greeting each other with the words,
“The peace of Christ be with you,” or simply, “Peace.”
The response is, “And also with you.”)
*Response of Praise
(Hymnal, 401)
Here in this place the new light is streaming;
now is the darkness vanished away;
see in this space our fears and our dreamings
brought here to you in the light of this day.
Gather us in, the lost and forsaken;
gather us in, the blind and the lame;
call to us now, and we shall awaken;
we shall arise at the sound of our name.

Is there anybody here who loves my Jesus? Anybody here who loves my Lord?
I want to know if you love my Jesus. I want to know if you love my Lord.
Peter on the sea, Peter, do you love my Lord?
Daniel in the lions' den, Daniel, do you love my Lord?
Gabriel, blow your trumpet. Gabriel, won't you blow your horn.

The Apostles’ Creed (Traditional)
I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,
dead and buried; he descended into hell;
the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church;
the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins;
the resurrection of the body;
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Even before we call on Your name
To ask You, O God,
When we seek for the words to glorify You,
You hear our prayer;
Unceasing love, O unceasing love,
Surpassing all we know.

Glory to the Father,
And to the Son,
And to the Holy Spirit.
Even with the darkness sealing us in,
We breathe Your name.
And through all the days that follow so fast,
We trust in You;
Endless Your grace, O endless Your grace,
Beyond all mortal dream.
Both now and for ever,
And unto ages and ages,
Amen.

Welcome to the Fellowship of University Presbyterian Church
SUNDAY MORNING CARE is available during both worship services for infants,
toddlers and preschool children, who will be welcomed by our trained nursery staff
and parent volunteers. Infants are welcome in the Sanctuary, but the parlor is a
wonderful place to calm an anxious baby. A special part of our service is the Time
with Children, when they are invited to join the pastor on the chancel steps for a
message that connects the worship of the day with their unique understanding.
DURING THE 11:00 A.M. WORSHIP SERVICE, UPC offers Godly Play for
kindergarteners and four-year-olds. This is a time of storytelling and creative play.
Following the Time with Children, kindergarteners and four-year-olds go with the
Godly Play Assistant through the door near the pulpit to the Godly Play room on
the first floor. Younger children exit through the door near the parking lot and font.
WE WELCOME AND EMBRACE ALL CHILDREN and strive to provide skilled
caregivers to accommodate any special needs. Please contact the Staff Associate
for Children’s Ministries, Nancy Myer, at [email protected] or (919) 929-2102 if
there is anything we can do to enhance the Sunday morning experience for your
entire family.
THE WORSHIP BULLETIN, along with the weekly calendar, announcements and
church newsletter, are posted on the church Website at www.upcch.org.

THIS MORNING’S ORGAN MUSIC highlights the organ’s synergetic nature.
Each set (or rank or stop) of pipes in our Sanctuary organ produces a single, unique
tone (our Sanctuary organ contains 39 stops). When two stops are combined, their
two unique tones combine to produce a new, third sound (1+1=3). As more stops
are added, the resulting combinations continue to morph into still newer and more
complicated sounds. This morning’s Voluntary begins using just one stop (the
pipes in the façade at the top of the organ case); the second part of the Voluntary
features a sound unique to the organ called the Cornet (pronounced Kor-ney). The
Cornet is a collective sound composed of multiple ranks of pipes (each note sounds
six pipes each of a different pitch) which blend together to produce a complex,
piquant solo voice. The Cornet first appeared in the early Sixteenth-century in
Germany, and was known in the Netherlands and France soon there-after. The lush
sounds heard occasionally in the 8:30 Offertory were invented in France in the
Nineteenth century. This effect, called the V oix célèste (heavenly voice), is
produced by using two identical sets of pipes, with one tuned slightly sharp of the
other: the resulting ‘out of tuneness’ causes a gentle, undulating effect reminiscent
of the warmth of orchestral strings.
THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM is being administered this morning to David
Malcolm Sanford, son of Bill and Katie Sanford (brother to Clara). David was born
on August 14, 2014. The banner was made by Presbyterian Women.
TODAY WE ORDAIN AND INSTALL Christie Osborne as an Elder Class of 2017
and Lyn Billings as a Deacon in the Class of 2017 during the 11:00 a.m. service.
