Growing in God
Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson
(copied in part and with permission)
“May I see your photo ID?” That’s a question
expected from the passport inspector at any
given airport. But it was quite a surprise to hear
it coming from my doctor’s secretary.
In His time, Our Lord Jesus Christ had an ID
problem, but in His case, the questioners always
asked to know His identity after He did a good
deed, even a miraculous one. In today’s Gospel
Jesus frees a man from the ugly throes of
demonic possession. The people of Capernaum
are quick to ask “What is this? A new teaching
backed up with authentic authority?” It is no
surprise that our Lord’s fame spreads all over
the place.
The pairing of fame with fortune that dominates
the wishes of many people today is a clear
contradiction of Christian life goals. Fame is
fleeting, but that doesn’t deter those with
ambitious for it. As for fortune, that pursuit
remains ever popular. Lottery tickets are
scooped up daily, with little or no thought on the
buyer’s part that their deed “benefits senior
citizens.” They want it to benefit them.
Jesus has no interest in fame or fortune. But
He is vitally interested in people having the
correct spiritual ID, including us. Oh yes, we
have such an ID. We got it at our Baptism.
The end result is that we know who we are
without even looking at any card. We are
Christ’s, and hopefully proud of it. Theoretically
at least we reject the twin goals of fame and
fortune as the reasons for living. Practically
speaking, we acknowledge the pull of those two
items on our hearts. Sometimes we forget how
counterfeit they are because they appear so
real. That’s when we have to face facts and reexamine our daily decisions.
The great season of Lent is now less than a
month away. In car talk, that’s “tune-up time.”
Lent is a good time to update our Christian
credentials. There’s an old slogan once used
by my late Dad’s insurance company that was
valid then and still is today if placed in the
spiritual realm. It proclaimed that “the future
belongs to those who prepare for it.” Amen!

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP
The parish Ministry of Consolation will be
conducting a bereavement support group to
help anyone with the loss of a loved one. The
support group will cover a wide range of grief
concerns focusing on the journey from grief to
healing. The support group will meet every
Tuesday morning beginning on Tuesday, Feb
10th, at 10:00 AM, for 7 weeks. We will meet in
the Parish Meeting Room (in the back of the
school).
All of the volunteer support group facilitators
have been trained and certified by the National
Catholic Ministry to the Bereaved. The Parish
Meeting Room offers privacy, and all meetings
will be conducted in the strictest confidence.
There is no fee or requirements for this group. If
you are hurting no matter how long ago your
loss occurred, come let Jesus heal your troubled
heart.
If you are interested in attending these support
group sessions please contact Deacon Sean at
609-654-8208, ext.512
Let us all remember this: one cannot proclaim
the Gospel of Jesus without the tangible witness
of one’s life. Those who listen to us and observe
us must be able to see in our actions what they
hear from our lips, and so give glory to God! I
am thinking now of some advice that Saint
Francis of Assisi gave his brothers: preach the
Gospel and, if necessary, use words. Preaching
with your life, with your witness. Inconsistency
on the part of pastors and the faithful between
what they say and what they do, between word
and manner of life, is undermining the Church’s
credibility.

Join us as we study the
Book of Psalms
Beginning Wednesday, February 4th
We hear the Psalms read or sung at every Mass
but do we understand their significance?
The Psalms are at the heart of the Bible. They
are prayers from God that help us learn to pray.
The Holy Spirit inspired them. Israel sang them.
Christ himself prayed them, as did our Blessed
Mother. These sacred hymns become our
heartfelt response to God’s loving and wondrous
deeds for us. Their words captivate the
imagination and draw us into a deeply personal
encounter with God.
.
We will be studying the Psalms beginning
Wednesday, February 4th at 10:15 AM in the
Emmaus Center. We will be using Psalms: The
School of Prayer is a video-based study by Jeff
Cavins, Sarah Christmyer, and Dr. Tim Gray.
For more information or to register for the study,
call the Parish Office at 609-654-8208 ext. 110
or via email: [email protected]. We hope
you can join us!
If you would like to purchase a study guide (it is
optional), the cost is $21.
Eucharistic Adoration
An Invitation from Jesus
Come and spend some time with Jesus. He
waits for us in the Blessed Sacrament.
You
don’t have to “do” anything. Simply come and
sit with Him for awhile.
We have Eucharistic
Adoration every Thursday from 9:30 AM – 7:00
PM in the church. (In the event of a funeral, the
Blessed Sacrament will be reposed. Adoration
will resume after the funeral).

SCOUT SUNDAY
The Parish-Chartered Cub Scout Pack 108 will
celebrate National Scout Sunday at the 9 a.m.
Mass on February 8, 2015. Several Cub
Scouts from Pack 108 will receive special
Catholic emblems for following the Cub Scout
promise and fulfilling their Duty to God.
Pack 108 encourages all other local Boys
Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Daisies to
wear their uniforms to Mass and celebrate
National Scout Sunday with them.
We have commemorative “Scout Sunday”
patches for scouts who join the celebration. In
order to receive one, we need to e-mail
[email protected] by February 4th.
Children who are interested in joining the scouts
are invited to meet with scouting representatives
at the Emmaus Center following the Mass.
Presentation of the Lord
February 2
Under Mosaic Law, a woman would present
herself to the priests in the temple 40 days after
childbirth and offer sacrifice for her purification
and to ransom or redeem a first-born son.
In Luke’s account, Jesus was welcomed in the
temple by two elderly people, Simeon and Anna.
They embody Israel in their patient expectation;
they acknowledge the infant Jesus as the long
awaited Messiah.
Community Sunday
February 8th following the
7:30, 9:00 & 11:00 Masses
Everyone is invited to stop by for refreshments
and fellowship. Stop by Cub Scout Pack 108’s
table to see what the scouts have been up to!
The Bear’s Den
The Bear's Den has begun its 15th
year here at St. Mary of the Lakes.
We would like to thank all those who
help us have our meetings. We wish
them a Happy and Healthy New Year as we all
begin our New Year.
Our meeting will be on Friday, Feb. 13, 2015,
just in time for Valentine’s Day and right after
Ground Hogs Day. Hope Spring is here soon.
We will be doing an arts and craft with a new
member of our volunteers, so it will be a grand
evening. The meeting will of course be in the
Emmaus Center from 7 until 9 P.M. I do hope to
see all our friends there this month. Call Pat, if
you would like to join us, at 609/ 654 - 0157.
Happy Valentines Day! Keep warm.
The Feast Day of
St. Blaise February 3
St. Blaise was a bishop in Armenia during the
4th century. He was a trained physician. To
escape the persecution of Christians, he hid in a
cave. According to legend, when men arrived to
arrest him, they found him coexisting with wild
animals and nursing them back to health. While
in prison, Blaise was visited by a woman whose
livestock he had saved from a wolf. The woman
brought food and candles to his cell. This story,
and another that tells how Blaise saved a boy
who was choking on a fish bone, are the reason
he is the patron saint of those with illnesses of
the throat.
This Tuesday, February 3rd, the Feast of St.
Blaise we will offer the traditional Blessing of the
Throats after both the 7:15 AM and 9:00 AM
Masses.

LENTEN COMPANION
SAYINGS OF LIGHT AND LOVE
Thurs., February 19 - 9:30 AM – 1:00 PM
St. John of the Cross has written some pithy
spiritual nosegays, called maxims, that cut to
the heart of our call to conversion and union
with God. I can’t think of a better Lenten
companion than John, or a better Lenten
Practice than to spend a little time each day
pondering and praying over his “Sayings of Light
and Love.” You will have a very special Lent if
you are able to come. Donation: $25, lunch and
materials included.
HEALTHY EATING AS A LENTEN PRACTICE
Friday, February 20 - 9:30 AM – 1:00 PM
Sometimes the greatest asceticism is choosing
to be kind, not only to others, but to our own
bodies. This retreat morning will afford time and
space for input, prayer and sharing on just what
that means and how healthy eating can bring us
to an inner peace and readiness to pray during
this Lenten Season. Jesus tells us to fast and
pray. Could healthy eating be a form of fasting
for you? Donation: $20, lunch included.
PRAYING WITH SHAME,
ANGER & GUILT
Residents and Commuters Welcome!
February 20 – 22
Friday 7 PM – Sunday 1 PM
Through
prayer,
presentations,
guided
reflections, and confidential small group
interaction, we will explore a psycho-spiritual
approach to shame, anger and guilt. By means
of theoretical understanding and personal
practice, an effort will be made to begin a
healing of these emotions and their effects, and
to deal with them more creatively in the future.
Presenter: Fr. Bill Schneck, SJ Donation: $150.

Healing the Wounds of Abortion
Rachel’s Vineyard
Post-abortive Retreat
The psychological and spiritual wounds of
abortion can be sharp, deep and crippling. You
may feel a deep numbness and may not be able
to name the pain or recognize any of the
symptoms. It can also have a devastating
impact on the father or grandparents of the
aborted child and friend/s of the mother.
You do not have to continue to hide in shame
and fear. Rachel’s Vineyard’s Retreat is a
chance to focus on this painful time in your life
through a supportive non-judgmental process, in
an atmosphere of confidentiality, understanding,
and compassion.
The retreat is designed to help both women and
men experience the mercy and compassion of
God.
If you have suffered through an abortion and
have isolated yourself from healing and
forgiveness, you might consider attending one
our retreat weekends. For more information,
contact: Judy Warenkiewicz at 732-536-6871.
All inquiries are strictly confidential.
2015 Weekend Retreats:
