If you do not have a parish home we invite you to become part of our parish family and become fully involved in our life of prayer, education, service and community. Registration helps us to serve you when issuing letters in connection with sponsorship of Baptism, Confirmation or Matrimony, and also for letters of reference. Kindly notify the rectory if your address changes. Marriage: Couples contemplating marriage in the parish must contact the parish office to meet with a priest to begin the marriage preparation process. This is the first step in planning their wedding which needs to be done one year before the date of the wedding. Baptisms: celebrated every second and fourth weekends of the month at 12:30 PM in St. John’s Church. We also encourage parents to have their children baptized during the 11 AM Mass on Sunday. Contact the Parish Office at least two weeks before the desired date of Baptism to make arrangements. Parents are required to attend a preparation Class before the Baptism. Classes are on the last Thursday of every other month at 7:00 PM in the McLaughlin Hall. Anointing of the Sick: In case of serious illness or advanced age please call the priests. For hospital cases, contact the hospital Chaplain. Notify the office as well so a priest may visit. Bishop Dennis Sullivan was invited by 4th grader Joseph Wigginton of Good Shepherd Catholic School, who wrote a letter to Bishop Sullivan asking him to come visit his school. Joe & Bishop Sullivan have become friends the past year! Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Dt 18:15-20; Ps 95: 1-2, 6-7, 7-9; 1 Cor 7:32-35; Mk 1:21-28 In Jesus’ first visit to a synagogue in Mark’s Gospel, we encounter a key theme in this evangelist’s writing: Jesus’ authority. This is evidenced both in his words - “the people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority” - and in the exorcism of the unclean spirit. Unlike other exorcists of his day, who used many words while performing exorcisms, Jesus commands the unclean spirit with just two words in the Greek text, and it leaves. The brevity of his command illustrates his power over the spirit. In the Book of Deuteronomy, Moses promises the people that in the future God will send “a prophet like me” to lead the people. This desire for an intermediary between the LORD and the people is based on their experience of God's great power on Mount Sinai, mediated through Moses. The people believe that to experience God face to face is to risk death. God promises to “raise up for them a prophet … who shall tell them all that I command”. Over the centuries, this prophetic figure came to be understood as the longed-for Messiah. Paul continues to advise the Corinthians with the expectation of Christ’s imminent second coming, as we heard last week. His advice to the unmarried, that they should refrain from marring, is based on the idea that one who is unmarried can dedicate more time to serving the Lord. If the Lord’s return is near, then focusing on the things of God is advisable. Though we do not expect Jesus’ return soon, we still can follow Paul’s advice by making sure our lives have a sense of balance between worldly affairs and the things of God. For reflection: In what ways have I experienced Jesus' authority? Have I ever experienced God's liberating power in my life or in the life of another? The Beautiful Gift of Light The Sanctuary Light burns seven days a week, every week of the year before the Blessed Sacrament. If you would like this candle to burn in memory of a loved one, e.g. a birthday, anniversary of death, wedding anniversary, or any special occasion, please call our parish office. For more info about how to get involved with youth ministry and the Souper Bowl for Caring, visit the parish website or contact Tim Rooney at [email protected] 4 FOOD PANTRY UPDATE We have become a much more important source of food for the community now that the food pantry at Grace Baptist Church in Haddon Township has shut down! However, our resources are limited as we are not government funded and operate strictly on donations. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, which operates the food pantry, is ever grateful for your generous donations which help us to put food on the table for many families. As always, we try to provide main meal items that might not be available at the area’s remaining food pantries. We always need donations of canned fruit, chunky soups, stews, canned meat and fish, pasta and sauce, and small jars of jelly, crackers, cereal (hot and cold) and other main meal items. We cannot accept perishables, expired items, meal supplements or items which have been previously opened. Again, thank you for living the gospels by helping us to feed the hungry! St. Vincent DePaul Sandwich Making Takes place February 16th (3rd Monday every month) at 7PM in Good Shepherd Cafeteria. Bring your own bread, meat and cheese and join us! We supply sandwich bags and gloves. Due to a nice turn out of families for Dr. King service day we were able to make 1170 sandwiches this week. Thank you to all who helped out! Our Discussion Meeting takes place on the 3rd Tuesday of the Month, February 17th at 7PM in the conference room of the Faith Formation Center. If you would like to learn more about the process, please call Pat Lipperini at 858-0298. New Year, New Growth in the Lord! One of the most important New Year’s resolutions we can make is to pay more attention to our spiritual life. And then we speak to God from the fullness of our heart and God listens. Listening and speaking is what prayer is...oneness with God.” Mother Teresa Take some extra time this week to listen to God in the silence of your heart...be one with God. Blessings, Sister Bonnie “When we no longer pray, no longer pay attention to the voice of Love that speaks to us in the moment, our lives become absurd lives...If we could just be, for a few minutes each day, fully where we are, we would indeed discover that we are not alone and that the One who is with us wants only one thing: to give us love.” Henri Nouwen Special thanks to Monica Masiko for joining us at GIFTS as we prayed together, socialized and made casseroles for homeless people in Camden. The afternoon was filled with God’s spirit of love and service and we accepted the challenge of Pope Francis and immersed ourselves in a “culture of inclusion” instead of a “culture of exclusion.” Best said by Monica in response to my thank you: “It really is MY pleasure to be there, serving and receiving. We are working together to create and sustain a community of belonging where each individual’s dignity and self-respect is strengthened by the solidarity of our shared faith, the respect and affection we have for one another, and our mutual dedication to our God-given mission. With God's help we will continue to grow in discipleship. The willingness of our members to enter into sacrificial giving of time, talent, and treasure in response to our Stewardship Appeal speaks of our continuing gratitude for God's gifts. May God continue to bless us as we share in His work! STEWARDSHIP APPEAL UPDATE Our Stewardship Appeal was a great success. Everything is great and so useful. Blessed Teresa of Calcu a has always been so generous to the babies and the mothers. God bless all of you and a happy and blessed New Year. Sincerely, Catherine Farrell, 1st Way 8 Sandwich Making Responses When asked why people came out on Monday for the sandwich making night, here were some of the responses… To think of others, and service for MLK day. To give back because we are blessed. To help people who need sandwiches more than us. We’re making sandwiches for the poor people. To spend me with my son doing something loving. For the warm feeling in my heart and to serve God. I want to make it fair for the people that don’t get food. It’s what we do. To pay it forward. To show my children service through ac ons, not just words. I think it sets a good example. If we can’t help others, who can we help. 0527—BTC SCHOOL OF LITURGY FORMATION SESSIONS - WINTER - SPRING 2015 School of Liturgy sessions required for diocesan certification Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Lectors Spirituality and Ministry History of the Liturgy& a review of the Liturgical Documents Pastoral Care of the Sick Practical Experience Spirituality and Ministry History of the Liturgy & a review of the Liturgical Documents Use of the Lectionary Practical Experience Cantors Spirituality of Music Ministers Practical Training Liturgical “Best Practices” Breathing Vocalization Diction Projection Ritual Music Hymnody Psalmody FEE $35 A MINIMUM OF 20 REGISTRATIONS FOR EACH MINISTRY IS REQUIRED FOR SESSIONS TO BE HELD Millville Cherry Hill Turnersville PARISH OF ALL SAINTS CHURCH OF ST.
