Winter at The Clubhouse
‘Alpha Alpine Action’
07
A week at The Clubhouse in winter should
combine the best mountain time you can
find with everything you’d expect to get
from a few nights in London –
A well made mojito, something other
than hot cheese and cold meat to eat,
big modern bedrooms with clean crisp
linen, rainforest showers and no pine
in sight. That sort of thing.
But they don’t make it easy for you
here in the valley. No motorway pistes
or ski-in, ski-out. No ski butler or fine
dining on the mountain side.
The view of Mont-Blanc from the front steps of The Clubhouse
People come here for the snow not
the après-ski. For the mountain not
the nightlife. Because it is really good
not because it sounds good. It’s like
there’s an invisible ‘idiot filter’ at the
mouth of the Chamonix valley that
keeps all of that lot elsewhere with
their harlequin hats and their happy
hour schnapps.

Head chef Mark Webb (Chez Bruce and La Trompette) has devised the
perfect winter combination of fresh ingredients, seasonal specialities
and a menu unique in Chamonix
Après-ski
There isn’t a great après-ski scene
in Chamonix, (although the Chambre
Neuf’s not bad and the Rhododendron
in Flégère got off to a great start in
2009), but at The Clubhouse the
bar is open from 4pm and there'll
be something you can snack on.
Dinner
We serve a three-course dinner five
nights of the week every Monday,
Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and
Saturday. Dinner sittings are between
7pm and 9pm. Menus for the week
are usually displayed around The
Clubhouse (but they can be subject
to change, so please check).
Wednesdays
This is the one evening a week
when our kitchen is closed, if you
are arriving late though, we can
usually rustle up a baguette or
something toastie.
Sunday Roast
We're well known in the valley for our
Sunday Roasts – roast beef served
with great spuds and veg and the
‘world’s best gravy’. We do this every
Sunday from 5-9pm and to make
things even better, we like to ask our
UK guests flying out on Sundays to
bring priceless sharing copies of the
Sunday papers with them.

Lessons, guides etc.
Our main mountain partner for
lessons, guiding, Vallée Blanche tours,
all things off-piste, ski touring, snowshoeing and ice climbing etc is
Evolution 2. A full day’s guiding costs
from 335€ for 2 people. If you want
to book any lessons or guiding, please
do so yourself direct by calling
04 50 55 53 57, or ask us to arrange
a rep to come in and talk through

recommend that you pre-book
all activities and especially during
high season.
Skiing/boarding in Italy
Courmayeur is less than 30 mins
away through the Mont-Blanc tunnel.
A round trip tunnel ticket for the 11km
journey costs 43.70€ or we might be
able to lend you our multi-pass which
will cost you 25€.
11
Skiing/boarding in Switzerland
Verbier is about an hour’s drive away
via Martigny for some sunny ‘snowbowl’ skiing and outrageously
expensive lunches.
Prestige – Outdoor Specialists
Oli at Prestige organises all kinds
of day and night time activities in
Chamonix, Courmayeur and beyond
for the adventurous, romantic or
gourmands amongst you – from
snowmobile treks to farmhouse
restaurants with torch-lit descents to
helicopter drops at the Crémerie du
Glacier in winter to rafting the entire
Dora Baltea, glacial hiking and golf
trips in the Summer. If you are in
Chamonix for a week, you should do
at least one of Oli’s trips. Book direct
on 06 80 20 83 70. There is more
information on Oli’s trips elsewhere
in this guide.
Paragliding/parapente
If you fancy soaring above Chamonix
for a 20 minute, 1,000m drop tandem
flight, we recommend our partners Fly
Chamonix on 06 10 28 20 77.
Regular flights cost 100€ per person
(plus your Brévent lift ticket up to Plan
Praz – one way) and you will need
about an hour to get up, off, down
and back. You can also fly from
higher (including the Aiguille du Midi
and Les Grands Montets) or book
courses (around 700€) with Sean
at fly-chamonix.com
Helicopter stuff
Heli-skiing is illegal in France but the
heli-ski season in Italy usually starts
in January. Until then, we can arrange
helicopter transfers for you, fantastic
leisure flights over the Mont-Blanc
Massif or flights to Megève with
CMBH. The Clubhouse has leased
flight time at a discounted rate for
the benefit of residents. Some
flight options are set out further
on in this guide.
Not on snow?
A fairly good day out involves taking the
historic Montenvers train up to 1900m,
from where you can see, walk down
and into the famous glacier, Mer de
Glace. There’s an interesting, if not
particularly good restaurant at the top
too. There is also an Alpine museum
which is free of charge and open until
4pm. Trains run every hour from 10am
until 3pm from the Montenvers train
station and cost 25€.

To make the most of your visit with us, we

Oli at Prestige – Outdoor Specialists organises
everything and this is just a taster of what
you can do.
Private Ski Instruction
Enjoy the benefits of personalised
tuition from highly qualified and
experienced pros. Full day or
half day lessons for skiing
or snowboarding.
Half day 210€/Full day 370€.
Tailor-Made Guiding
From glacier skiing to ice climbing, be
the master of your own itinerary.
1-6 people (according to guide ratio
and itinerary) Full day 385€.
Heli Crémerie
Add a little adrenalin to the day with
a helicopter transfer between the
Grand Montets slopes and your table
at the restaurant, Crémerie du Glacier.
Your helicopter will skirt cliffs and
mountains and swoop over twisted ice
features, all in time to drop you off for
a well earned lunch.
Groups of 4+ from 265€ per person
(includes full day ski instruction).
The Italian Job
Spend the evening in the neighbouring
resort of Courmayeur and a thrilling
night-time ascent up the Italian slopes by
skidoo. After a fantastic dinner of some
great regional Italian cuisine and drinks
(for Dutch courage), you’ll ski down the
mountains by the light of your headtorch (non-skiers and the not-so-brave
can descend by skidoo).
Groups of 6+ from 188€ per person.
Moonlit Vallée Blanche
Quite possibly one of the most amazing
experiences you could have in
Chamonix. Catch the last cable car of
the day to watch the sun set from the
Aguille du Midi. Cross the arête and visit
the infamous Refuge des Cosmiques for
dinner and a few drinks before heading
down the Vallée Blanche at around
10pm. The glacier and snowy mountains
are absolutely stunning beneath the
moonlit night sky and if you ever happen
to be in Chamonix around a full moon,
you should definitely do this.
Groups of 4+ from 155€ per person.
Heli 7 Tarantaise Tour
Ski 7 ski resorts in one day on our
incredible tour, linking together the
best skiing in the French Alps. Leave
Chamonix by helicopter, flying over the
Vallée Blanche to Tignes where snowmobiles wait to take you to the top of
your first spectacular descent. Skiing to
Champagny, then La Plagne, Bellecote
– skiing the face nord de Bellecote to
Peisey Nan Croix, Les Arcs and off piste
to Villaroger. Finish the day back in
Argentière with a fantastic descent on
the Grands Montets. Ski pass, lunch,
day guiding, helicopter included.
Groups of 5+ from 780€ per person.
Husky Sledding Evening
Spend a fun evening driving your own
team of huskies around forest and
mountain paths, then finish off with a
well-earned meal in the warmth of a
local restaurant.
Adults from 135€ per person.
James Bond Night
Explore the surroundings of the
Mont-Blanc range by snow scooter.
The views are breathtaking as you ride
up by skidoo to a typical French
farmhouse (not reachable by road) for
dinner. At the end of the evening,
sledge back down the slopes by the
light of head torches (if you’re eyes
aren’t closed).
Groups of 6+ from 155€ per person.
Snow & Spa Day
There are a couple of great spas within
easy driving distance of Chamonix if you
fancy a day of R&R, or get your heart
rate pumping in the morning with some
snow-shoeing or cross-country skiing, a
break for lunch, and then reward
yourself with a couple of hours in the
renowned spa of Pré St Didier.
Price includes all transport, passes,
lunch with wine and spa entrance.
Groups of 4+ from 185€ per person.

One of our favourite mountain partners is
Pascal Brun, the owner and chief pilot of
CMBH. When he’s not rescuing snow-blind
riders and stranded skiers, he can often be
found ferrying The Clubhouse guests to and
from Megève and Les Contamines or on trips
across the Mont-Blanc Massif.
Helicopter time is charged on a
per-minute basis although there are
some set prices for various popular
itineraries. As well as airport transfers,
CMBH (Chamonix Mont-Blanc Helico)
runs four main leisure flights around
Mont-Blanc Massif.

The helicopter can take up to 6
passengers at a time. If you want
a bespoke flight or transfer, please
let us know and we’ll book it for you,
The Clubhouse gets 10% off and
we’ll pass this saving onto you.
Sample winter itinerary
One fairly cheap (for a group) and easy
itinerary is to visit Les Grands Montets
for the day and have lunch at La
Crémerie du Glacier – 04 50 54 07 52.
This is off to the right through the
woods near the bottom of Pierre à Ric
(the red home run that goes right back
to the car park). After a great lunch
of croûtes, walk 100 metres to your
helicopter for a post-lunch 10 minute
flight that you’ll never forget for around
60€ per head if there’s six of you.
Get back on the snow, ride back to
Pierre à Ric and you’ve got the rest of
the afternoon on the mountain. Make
sure you book the flight on the day
and mention The Clubhouse to get
the best rate – 04 50 54 13 82.
Last day on snow?
17
16
You’ve only got one week to live and this is your
‘last day on snow’ so what are you going to
do?! Well, for a start you’re in the right place –
Chamonix is a mecca for Alpinism, skiers and
riders the world over – and one of the best
ways to make the most of your last day on
snow is to go with the Mountain Tracks plan.
What is it?
An action-packed day of skiing/riding
in the most ‘out there terrain on the
white planet’. You will be guided by
one of the world’s top international
mountain guides who knows exactly
where to find the best runs and
ensure you experience the ultimate
‘last day on snow’.
Who is it good for?
Top-end skiers and snowboarders
confident they can handle pretty
much any slopes in any conditions.
Perfect if you’ve only got a couple of
days in the valley and you want to
experience the best of the steep and
(hopefully) deep in some of the
world’s most dramatic ski terrain.
What do I need?
You need to be in good shape and
armed with the right gear for the back
country. This includes wide ‘allmountain’ skis or board and a small
pack with the must-have trilogy of
avalanche transceiver, shovel and
probe; as well as climbing harness
and crampons. Don’t worry if you
don’t have these we can hire them
for you. Oh and water, snacks,
camera etc.
What will it cost me?
360€ per head based on a group
of 4-6 (max).
Tell me more
In the morning we whisk you from
The Clubhouse down to the Aiguille
du Midi and up the highest lift in
Europe to 3842m. From there we ski
one of the classic descents on the
Envers Glacier or in the Vrai Vallée
Blanche (not the punters Vallée
Blanche) if there’s enough snow we
can ski all the way back to Chamonix.
After lunch we head to the Grands
Montets to descend the legendary
Pas de Chèvre again all the way
down to Chamonix... one of the
world’s biggest and best off piste
descents. If the group is up to it we
could take the Rectiline couloir entry
which gives us access to the
awesome powder fields directly
beneath the Dru. All in all 5,500m of
descent in just two runs.
Then it’s get yer ass back to
The Clubhouse and you should
know the score by now: refreshing
rainforest shower followed
by an invigorating dry Martini and
fireside dining with good wine
and even better Armagnac.

Summer
Summer at The Clubhouse
‘Active Relaxation’
19
I love Chamonix in the summer. The weather
is generally glorious and fresh and there is
no shortage of things to do (or not do).
For me, a short summer break or
a week away at The Clubhouse
promises the relaxed atmosphere of
an English country house (newspapers,
lie-ins, long lunches, sofas you sink
into, dessert every day, a massage
maybe, DVDs in the evening...) but
with much better weather, delicious
food, mountain air, and a view of
Mont-Blanc towering over the terrace.
Plus there’s the option to do
something more challenging with your
day than deciding whether to have the
lamb or the salmon for dinner. If you’re
not quite up to climbing Mont-Blanc,
there’s everything from rock climbing
and paragliding to mountain biking,
golf, white water rafting, forest walks,
swimming and tennis.

Mountain bikes/bike hire
Try single-track cross-country trails
or get a ski lift to the top of a very
wide, very fast and very dangerous
descent run. Chamonix is fantastic for
both. Prices for a group of 4 or more
start from around 80€ per person (bike
included) for a half day to 175€ for a
3 x half day course (bike included).
Rock climbing & ice climbing
Chamonix is the climbing capital of the
world, with thousands arriving every
year to test themselves against the
monster that is the Mont-Blanc Massif.
You don’t need to have an extremist
mentality to enjoy what’s on offer here
as there are plenty of gentle rock
ascents for beginners from 155€ per
person per day (min. 2 people).
Half days 49€.
If you want to discover a side of the
Alps that few ever get to experience,
there’s the (not for the fainthearted)
challenge of the ice formations on the
Mer de Glace and Argentière glaciers.
Harnessed, roped and wielding
crampons and ice axes under the
leadership of a high mountain guide,
the sensation of walking up sheer ice
is unique. Prices go from 170€ per
person for 4 or more including lift
pass and equipment.
Prices may vary from season
to season
21
Canyoning
Wetsuit and helmet on, heart in mouth,
jumping twenty feet into a giant
mountain pool, before abseiling down
a steep rock whilst a waterfall crashes
onto your body. Get the idea? Led by
experienced professionals, the power
of the river draws people in and
requires teamwork with everyone
taking part. Try it out in France, Italy
or Switzerland from 65€ per person
for half a day, 99€ for a full day and
130€ for a full day in Italy.
White water rafting
The Mont-Blanc region is outstanding
rafting territory. On our doorstep we
have the Giffre, L’Arve and, in Italy, the
word class Dora Baltea. Rafting is a
great team exercise and there are lots
of different combinations on offer
around the valley and nearby – private
boats for up to 8 from 480€ or 115€
per person. You can also combine it
with canoerafting (2 people against
the wild) or hydrospeeding (body
rafting the rapids). We recommend
all of it.
Orienteering/hiking
With the entire massif to explore this
is real walking country, and serious
hikers return continuously to sample
the wild terrain. Take a local guide to
discover the Chamonix Valley, scenic
or invigorating the choice is yours.
Private guide for 120€ half day/200€
full day.
Golf
We are partners with Chamonix’s
own world class golf course designed
by Robert Trent Jones. There are also
fabulous courses to be found less than
an hour away in Italy, Switzerland and
Annecy, as well as the world renowned
championship course at Evian
(royalparcevian.com).
Prestige offer golf days including a
warm up and practice range with a
pro, professional instruction on an 18
hole course to help you improve all
aspects of your game and individual
video training; pro comments and
personal correction. Prices are from
100€ per day.
Spa Day
Just 30 minutes door to door on a
clear tunnel day, Pré St. Didier is a
beautiful Mont-Blanc back-dropped
outdoor spa, indoor fitness and
wellbeing centre – the ultimate
pampering treat and a fantastic day
out. Think Turkish baths, sauna and
thermal mud treatments... all for 42€
(weekdays)/48€ (weekends).
Via Ferrata
Scale a vertical rock face by using
cables and iron ladders. This
exciting experience is great for
everyone and no previous rock
climbing experience is necessary.
Prices start at 69€ for a half day
(min. 4 people).
Paragliding/parapente
If you fancy soaring above Chamonix
for a 20 minute, 1,000m drop tandem
flight, we recommend our partners Fly
Chamonix on 06 10 28 20 77.
Regular flights cost 100€ per person
(plus your Brévent lift ticket up to Plan
Praz – one way) and you will need
about an hour to get up, off, down
and back. You can also fly from
higher (including the Aiguille du Midi
and Les Grands Montets) or book
courses (around 700€) with Sean at
fly-chamonix.com

Art at The Clubhouse
30
We’ve got works by various artists at
The Clubhouse including Insect, Conor
Harrington, Steff Plaetz, Eine, D*Face,
Dolk Lundgren, Space Invader, Eelus
and Charlie Adam.
Charlie Adam
Charlie Adam is a local artist and
you’ll see his work in various bars
and restaurants in Chamonix. He’s
done things for us in the past and we
commissioned him to do a special
limited edition print of The Clubhouse
‘Secret Base’ for our guests. We have
produced an edition of just 100 signed
and numbered copies of this print and
they are available to buy from
reception for 65€.
Eating & drinking in Chamonix
32
We have tried just about every bar and
restaurant in Chamonix and this guide to
the best eating and drinking is based on
our own experiences; if you feel there is
something else to add please let us know.

Restaurants
Casa Valerio
Great pizzas and good pasta just
down the road from the Casino on
the Rue de Lyret.
04 50 55 93 40
Satsuki
This is the little Japanese place round
the corner from The Clubhouse, left
on Rue Vallot. They do a good set
lunch for 10.
04 50 53 21 99
MBC
If it’s a burger and a pint you’re after,
then MBC it is. Just a short walk away
from The Clubhouse (right on Rue
Vallot, right across the bridge, wind
your way through the sports centre
and it’s right there at 350 Route
de Bouchet), the beer is micro-brewed
by Canadians at this busy bar and the
food style is North American Fat &
Massive. You’ll be mad to turn up for
food without a booking.
04 50 53 61 59
Bistrot des Sports
This is a popular local place yearround for a good lunch and a quick
dinner. Left on to Rue Vallot, keep
going at the crossroads and it’s 50m
along on the left.
04 50 53 00 46
Sunday Roast at The Clubhouse
Munchie
Munchie is on the Rue des Moulins
and it’s pretty cool. Good world food
and friendly staff.
04 50 53 45 41
Atmosphere
Good French/Savoyard food in
a pine-clad, riverside ‘basement’
near La Poste in Place Balmat.
04 50 55 97 97
Hameau Albert 1er
This is Chamonix’s swankiest hotel
which also happens to house one of
Chamonix’s (s)wankiest restaurants –
La Maison Carrier. Lots of people
recommend this place but we’ve only
ever experienced expensive traditional
French food and snooty service.
But see for yourself.
04 50 53 00 03
Also at the hotel is Chamonix’s
only 2* Michelin restaurant –
The Albert 1er. The gastronomic
menu here is excellent if a little out of
place in Chamonix’s hard mountain
environment and, as with all French
Michelin star restaurants, is very
formal – every dish comes with at
least three doilies.
04 50 53 05 09
Neapolis
Good pizza and antipasto. In the
Alpina building beneath the hotel
on the Quai de l’Arve side.

La Bergerie
This is the best mountain restaurant
in the valley at mid-station Brévent
and it's essential to book.
04 50 53 45 04
La Crémerie du Glacier
This cosy little hut just off Pierre à
Ric on the Grands Montets does
great croûtes.
04 50 54 07 52
Tigre Tigre
If you can’t last more than a week
without a chicken tikka massala, then
curry paradise awaits. All the standard
dishes plus Alpine touches and a
smart dining area and bar.
04 50 55 33 42
Le Bistrot
This place probably has the best food
in Chamonix. Chef Mickey won the
two Michelin stars for Albert 1er before
setting up shop here with co-owner
Sylvian. Le Bistrot is in the Morgane
Hotel on the Avenue de’Aguille du Midi.
Mention The Clubhouse when booking
to ensure a great welcome.
04 50 53 57 64
La Cabane
This is a smart and fairly pricey place
to eat good traditional food. Just up
the road in Les Praz, it's always best
to book.
04 50 53 23 27
Bars
Chambre Neuf
This is part of The Gustavia hotel
and very popular among the Swedish
crowd in Chamonix. A good fun
pub atmosphere and popular
après ski.
Elevation 1904
Popular French owned bar with
regular sports events screenings
and party nights.
MBC
Apart from being a good place to eat,
MBC is the only place in town where
you can buy a micro-brewed beer.
Mix Bar
This tiny bar on the Rue des Moulins
features visiting DJs and a small
river terrace.
Bar’d Up
Good to watch the football.
Soul Food
Small bar on the Rue des Moulins. Very
local, very French and some good DJs
squeezed in most nights too.
Clubs
There are a few clubs left in Chamonix
and they are all crap! They really, really
are. You can try Garage (down by the
Hotel Morgane) if you really need to or
Bar Le Choucas for a late drink but
don't go expecting Ibiza.

37
There are lots of great shops in Chamonix
and you’ll find these easily enough if you’re
willing to wander. We’ve picked out a few
of our favourites but we’re still working
on discounts and deals for you so this
list will get bigger.
Sanglard Sports
We think this is one of the best
traditional mountain clothing stores
in Chamonix and boasts a huge range
of choice and variety. For mountain
kit, head here first. Situated next to the
big roundabout opposite the market
square. 10% discount for residents of
The Clubhouse.
Ogier Sports
This is the blingest ski shop in town
and the sister shop of Ogier Sports in
Val d’Isere. 10% discount for residents
of The Clubhouse.
Zero G
For the best snowboard and
mountain-biking equipment in town
visit Zero G. Keep walking from The
Clubhouse along the main drag
through the town square. It’s the last
shop on the right hand side. Residents
get free boot hire in the winter and
10% off summer bike hire – result!
Cham Sports
Cham Sports is just round the corner
and offers all the kit you need at a
reasonable price too. 20% discount
for residents of The Clubhouse.
Le Salon
If you need a haircut, we recommend
Le Salon which is down by the casino.
Always best to book ahead with Eva
or one of her team – 04 50 53 17 75.
Iris Optique
This is the place to buy your
sunglasses and it’s right by The
Clubhouse just left out of the gate
on to Rue Vallot. They have an
excellent selection including Vuarnet,
Ray Ban and Prada. 10% discount
for residents of The Clubhouse.
Chanel
Chanel came into town a few years
ago and although it seems a little out
of place in Chamonix it’s a useful
landmark to let you know that next to it
is... La Maison de la Presse.
La Maison de la Presse
This is the best newsagent and
bookstore in town with hundreds of
magazines, millions of maps,
souvenir postcards and day late
English newspapers.
The North Face
The full range of North Face seasonal
range here on three floors.
POC
For snow, wheels and eyes, POC is
the hardware protection outlet on the
high street that specialises in great
technology and Scandinavian styling.
Helmets, goggles and the best shop
fitting in town make it one of our
favourites pocsports.com
Rue Vallot
Some of the things you’ll find if you
wander down the Rue Vallot – a
pharmacy, a great chocolate shop,
a film processing shop, three or four
places to buy your Beaufort and other
cheese, a supermarket, somewhere
to buy mountain photographs and
images, souvenir shops for t-shirts and
postcards, a dentist and half a dozen
other shops you’ll never need.
If you wander further down, you’ll also
find a nice tea shop and patisserie as
well as all of the branded snow wear
shops such as Napapijri, Quiksilver,
Peak Performance, Helly Hansen
and Patagonia.
