olphin From the Helm—Chris Dailey, Commodore Newsletter Vol. 39, No. 2 February 2015 Linda Barrett, Editor [email protected] www.shelterbayyachtclub.org 1000 SHOSHONE DRIVE, LA CONNER, WA 98257 February 2015 Shelter Bay Yacht Club Photos-Rod Proctor Well, we’re all soup’d up and off to the races for a great 2015 year at Shelter Bay Yacht Club with a modern record for attendance. The January 17th soup dinner put on by Linda and Jim Barrett with crew Mary and Phil Dolberg, Jennifer Johnston/Bill Plummer, Joanne Knutson, and Laurie and Gregg Wishkoski warmed our bodies and nourished them. Kudos to the 14 soup chefs, Mary Dolberg, Peggy Duehning, Diana Greer, Cate Grinzell, Louise Kari, Murray Laidley, Elizabeth Landry, Myrna Mahin, Nancy Miller, Ree Murphy, Sue Myers, Kim Oldis, Laurie Wishkoski and Britt Wisniewski, for providing the great soups! Then there were all the great salads and desserts!!! Thanks to all the members for their contributions to the nice evening. Capt’n Jim again provided a “year in review” of all the fun we had in 2014! What a great job he does on these productions - thank you yet again Jim. So start thinking and making a list of spring boat chores, signing up for a dinner or cruise crew and we can repeat with another exciting and fun year in 2015! Reciprocal Program No one stepped up to be reciprocal chair for 2015 so I am going to handle the “back room” chores and Ree Murphy is going to handle the payment boxes and voice recorder. We had 5 visiting vessels for 6 reciprocal nights in July, August and September. I put out a request to Fidalgo and Anacortes Yacht Clubs to add to our already 66 clubs, and Fidalgo YC has granted that request. I am still working on Anacortes YC. Both of these have slips in the Cap Sante Marina. So we have to be careful to not overuse them, being so close by. This coming summer we will be actively looking for marina slips to offer for our reciprocal program when you are away! Watch the spring/early summer Dolphins for details on how to loan your marina slip to the club for reciprocal use. We charge $3 per day to the visiting boat and pass that on to the slip owner to cover electrical used. It is with sadness that I report the passing of Ray Landry on January 23rd. Ray and Beth joined Shelter Bay Yacht Club in 2008 and were active in our cruising and clubhouse activities. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Beth and her family in this difficult time. There will be a service for Ray on Thursday, February 5th at 12:00 noon at St. Luke’s Parish, 322 North 175th Street, Shoreline, WA. Vice Commodore—Murray Laidley Vote of the Membership at the February Dinner Meeting The January Dolphin contains details on a number of initiatives coming to a vote at the February Crab Feed (http://shelterbay.kattare.com/newsletter/jan2015.pdf). Please familiarize yourselves with the issues and come prepared to cast your ballot. Call or email me as soon as possible if you need to request absentee ballots. Feel free to seek out any of your Bridge Officers with concerns and ideas for dinners or cruises; we are here for you and want communication to be as open as possible. Directory Update The 2015 Directory has gone to the printer and we hope to be able to distribute them at the Crab Feed. Thanks to Fred Laws who produces the Directory every year and to those who assisted in cross-checking our databases to produce a timely and accurate publication we all can use. For any future changes you may have, I encourage you to use the member profile edit on the club’s web site to keep your personal contact, addresses and boat info current. Opening Day 2015 Opening Day is not that far off. Time to search out those classy nautical and household objects to donate for the Auction. Contact me or Jim Barrett to join the Opening Day Crew. Arrival of the New J-Dock Rod Proctor captured some pictures of the new J-dock as it arrived in tow. Note the dog that came along for the fun. The old pilings were scheduled for removal as this goes to print. 2 Rear Commodore—Jim Barrett I’m sure you have heard the saying that “you are what you eat”. If that is so, we will have a whole lot of crabby people at the February Club Dinner. The beer will flow, crab, salad, bread and dessert will all be served by the capable team of crabby servers headed up by Ken & Marnie Lee and Jim & Betty Foster. We have a great slate of dinners coming up for this year with some “out of the box” ideas that look to be really fun. You can see the dates for all of these dinners on the Calendar section of this issue or on the web site under Event Calendar. It’s not too early to sign up for hosting a 2016 dinner. I already have one commitment, so give some thought to what would be a fun event and give me a call – 466-3027, or [email protected]. Sidney, on the Commodores cruise, is somewhat up in the air, because new leadership at Port Sidney Marina will soon be in place, but our dates of July 15, 16, and 17 have been entered by the temporary staff. The only conflict could be on the 17th; with Tacoma Yacht Club arriving that day, but their boat sizes (larger) and number should not pose a problem. March 12 Training at the Clubhouse—”Planning a boat trip to Princess Louisa” - Chris Dailey 21 Clubhouse Dinner—Murray & Val Laidley and Dennis Largé & Susan Brown Our Shakedown Cruise to Cap Sante, set for April 23, 24, 25 (note the change from my previous article), promises to be another outstanding event; hosted by W.C. & Lora Harvey, with crew. This destination, even though a short hop, always gives the boat owners a chance for checking systems; and also allows nonowners to join in and a chance to kick some fenders and enjoy a drink or two on board. On Sunday the 11th I received a surprise phone call from Ron Kostanich and Pat, volunteering to host Friday Harbor, along with Claus & Turid Dassel, Tom & Dee Ihrig, and Jerry & Carolyn Morris. Make no mistake, with a crew such as this, our stay at Friday Harbor promises to be quite an “affair”. Thank you for stepping up, for by doing so, you have made my job that much easier. April 4 Fire extinguisher certifications by Mike Eddy with Pacific Rim Fire 11 Everett Power Squadron Coast Guard safety inspection and 2015 certification 23-25 Shakedown Cruise to Anacortes—WC & Lora Harvey May 9 Opening Day of Boating—Bridge Officers June 25-27 June Cruise to Friday Harbor—Ron & Pat Kostanich 26 Friday Night BBQ at the Pavilion July 3-4 No Host Anchor Out at Fisherman’s Bay 15-22 Commodore’s Cruise to 3 ports on Vancouver Island, BC The Commodore’s Cruise is taking shape with Murray 15-17 Sidney—Port Host Needed 18-19 Maple Bay—Port Host Needed & Val Laidley hosting Ladysmith. A recent article in Sea Magazine boasts very highly of this newly updated 20-22 Ladysmith, BC—Murray & Val Laidley 31 Friday Night BBQ at the Pavilion marina. This leaves Sidney and Maple Bay up for grabs. Our cruise in September to Sucia is also open. August Friday Night BBQ at the Pavilion Again, I thank you all for volunteering to be port hosts 28 and or part of a crew. Also it’s imperative that we get September a boat count as soon as possible, especially Friday 10-12 Cruise to Sucia Island—Port Host Needed Harbor and the Commodore’s Cruise in July. These 19 Clubhouse Dinner—Betty Foster and the marinas fill up fast. Past Commodores October 8 Training at the Clubhouse—TBA 17 Clubhouse Dinner—Elizabeth & Ron Scott November 12 Training at the Clubhouse—TBA 21 Clubhouse Dinner—Cherry & Don Haas December 2 Afternoon, Decorate Clubhouse 5 Commodore’s Ball—Jim & Linda Barrett The Board of Directors meets at 9 am the morning of each club dinner. Dolphin articles are due by the 23rd of each month. 5 Training Coordinator—Jack Cheetham The January 8th session had 24 members in attendance and was well received. The group consumed 3 bags of cookies, setting a record according to Ron Kostanich. Many thanks to Thomas McNeal for presenting this navigation option. The February 12th program: “How to care for common emergency medical situations” will be presented by our Fire District #13 EMS crew. They will cover basics of CPR, AED operation and treatment of Hypothermia. Note this training session is also open to the community. The March 12 training session will be hosted by Chris Dailey on “planning a trip to Princess Louisa”. Our survey indicated a high interest in navigating Canadian waters so here is one to enjoy. Following the March session is fire extinguisher certifications on April 4th, a Saturday. Mike Eddy with Pacific Rim Fire Inc. will be providing this service. You will need your extinguishers “current” for the Everett Power Squadron Coast Guard safety inspection and 2015 certification sticker. The power Squadron is scheduled for April 11th the following Saturday to provide this service. Assembly area will be at Dock D starting at 0900 hours. Next month I will have a sign up roster for extinguishers and inspections so we can organize a head count for our hosts. You can also e-mail me any time to get on the roster. New Advertiser We welcome a new advertiser this month— Jim and Sandra Smith of Harbor Canvas in Oak Harbor. At the suggestion of one of our members, who is a recent customer, Harbor Canvas contacted us about putting an ad in our Directory, after the directory was ready to send to the printer, so we’re including it in this issue of the Dolphin and on the back page.
