WEEKEND UPDATE FRIDAY, JANUARY 30, 2015 CONGREGATIONAL MEETING AND LUNCHEON FEBRUARY 15 We will have our annual Congregational Meeting immediately following worship on February 15. This is a time for the session, pastors and staff to present the work completed in 2014 and our continuing projects and goals for 2015. Each year we also elect the congregation’s Nominating Committee for that year, and approve the co-pastors’ terms of call. This year our focus will be on becoming more familiar with our new congregational vision statement and how we can translate it into action. This is a covered dish event. There will be a person in the kitchen at 8:30 to help receive and store food for the luncheon. The session is providing ham, bread and beverages. Please plan to bring a main dish, side dish, or dessert that your family enjoys to share. SERMON SERIES Our current sermon series is called “Rightly Focusing Our Faith: The Apostles’ Creed for Today.” February 1 I Believe in the Holy Spirit February 8 The Church, Forgiveness of Sins and Eternal Life Resurrection and Life Everlasting February 15 February 18 Ash Wednesday service, 6 p.m. February 22 Coming to Grips with Our Powerlessness SCRIPTURE FOR SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2015 “I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. 5 But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; 11 about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. 12“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. Galatians 5:16-25 16 Live by the Spirit, I say, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For what the flesh desires is opposed to the Spirit, and what the Spirit desires is opposed to the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not subject to the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, 21 envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these. I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, competing against one another, envying one another. WONDERFUL WEDNESDAYS Elizabeth Lee Power, Associate Professor and Director of the Immigration Law Clinic at the University of Arkansas School of Law, will speak on "Immigration and the President's Initiatives" during next week’s Wonderful Wednesday. On the menu is chili and cornbread. Please make your reservation by noon Tuesday by calling the office (442-4411). Please see the dessert sign up in the narthex if you are able to bring a dessert or sign up at any Wonderful Wednesday supper. LEFT AND FOUND Many of you have delivered meals in times of joy or need for members and others who worship at FUPC regularly. These families often return your dishes to the church. When they are brought here, they can be retrieved from the Left and Found closet (door immediately to the far right when you enter Fellowship Hall). Please check this area for any missing items, currently including: a black scarf, a Bank of Fayetteville baseball cap, a 4T red velvet snowflake girl’s jacket, 1.75 brown “reader” glasses, a white ceramic deep quiche pan, and several other kitchen dishes and utensils. At the end of each quarter, if they are not marked, these items are donated to a local thrift store.
