Sanctification Father in the name of Jesus, as we begin to study your Word, we invite your Holy Spirit to Join with us, to teach us, train us, correct and counsel our thinking, that we may apply your will into our lives as it is exposed in Your Word. I ask that you would anoint your reader with clear and cognitive understanding. John 15:2: Every branch in Me that does not produce fruit He removes, and He prunes every branch that produces fruit so that it will produce more fruit. This is sanctification. We are the branches, Jesus is the vine, and God the Father is the Vine-dresser! For those of you who are new to my writing, my name is Greg, and my calling is that of an evangelistic teacher, so I'll begin this study with an abbreviated introduction. Like so many of others, I was a rebellious child, and I continued in my childish and unruly behavior until I was in my early 30s. Like all who came to Christ and have been born again; if you dig deep enough into your past, you will most probably find a faithful saint who was praying for your salvation. I fortunately had a great aunt who never gave up on me. Before receiving Christ, and like the rest of natural born humanity, I was a spiritual basket case. Today we use the term “Basket Case” contextually, in error. We wrongly labeled a person a basket case when they have failed mentally; whereas the term had a much more poignant and heart wrenching meaning at its point of origin, during WWI. It referred to an American war hero wounded on the battlefield; one who had to be carried off on a stretcher, or in a basket, having lost the use of legs or limbs. Today, for many in God’s boot camp, the problem isn’t usually a physical wounding; rather, it is those who attempt to join the front battle lines with God’s army, entering the fracas as basket cases. They will usually remain in this unrenewed state by denying their willingness for the required, and mandated personal sacrifice. We are called upon to offer to our Lord Jesus, not only life and limb, but our minds as well -- this is our act of true Worship. Romans 12:1-2 reads: And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will accept. When you think of what he has done for you, is this too much to ask? Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will know what God wants you to do, and you will know how good and pleasing and perfect his will really is. 1 After receiving Jesus as my Lord and Savior; I had an intense desire to share the love of Christ that was now in me, and to some degree my enthusiasm got way ahead of my understanding and biblical knowledge. Eventually, I was ordained and began functioning in the role of a pastor, even while I eagerly sought to fully understand the continuity of His Word. Now this was back at the height of the charismatic movement; and I tried it all; but still, there was something lacking in my theology. Eventually, God brought me to the Outer Banks and placed me under the tutelage of a mentor through whose ministry the Holy Spirit was able to fill in the gap with that portion of doctrine that was missing in my theological education. It is the contents of that essential and important gap that I would like to share in this study. For the most part, it has become the preeminent and pronounced part of almost every message that I now share daily on Facebook, and in my weekly internet bible study class. Now, for some of you this may be old hat, so I can only ask that you would indulge me as "Repetition Is The Mother Of Knowledge." Let's read again Romans 12:1-2 for this is the premier thrust of this communiqué. Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, that we present our bodies as a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is our spiritual service of worship. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of our mind, so that we may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. Did You Notice The Word Worship? It has become one of those terms that gets thrown around the church today so loosely that it has almost lost its meaning. I would love to define its use as either a noun or a verb, but I was a kindergarten dropout! ----Don’t laugh, I’d have made it into first grade if it hadn’t of been for the Vietnam Draft. . . So, let’s let the context define the use of the word. Worship is defined here as presenting your bodies as a living sacrifice. To praise God is good, but worship is far more than just praise. In Romans 7:6 The Spirit inspired Paul to write that we have been released from the Law. Most pew warmers are familiar, and are quick to quote, Galatians out of Scriptural context. They’ll argue, “We are no longer under the Law”; while at the same time ignoring the corresponding context that goes with being made free from the death penalty of the Law. Romans 7:4-6 So, my dear brothers and sisters, this is the point: we died to the power of the law when we died with Christ. And now we are united with the one who was raised from the dead. As a result, we can produce a harvest of good deeds for God. For while we 2 were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by the Law, were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death. But now, we have been released from the law, for we died to it and are no longer captive to its power. . . . , having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in way of the Letter of the Law. [paraphrase] What did we die to when we truly came to Christ and received His forgiveness, along with His indwelling Holy Spirit? We died to our old inherited sin nature that was condemned by the Law. Those dictates of the flesh, things taught by our five senses, befuddled by the knowledge of evil, and negatively influenced by Satan. 1st Peter 4:2 & 3 mocks the carnal knowledge that prevails in the nature of the unredeemed: [2] Having Received Christ Redemption, You won’t spend the rest of your lives chasing your own desires, but you will be anxious to do the will of God. You have had enough in the past, of the evil things that the godless Gentiles enjoy— having pursued a course of sensuality, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties and abominable idolatries.” [paraphrase] {ethnos --(non-Jewish) usually by implication a pagan or a heathen people), We can read more about our old nature’s divergence from our new Christlike nature, as it applies to us in Ephesians 4:17-24: So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that we are no longer to walk as the {pagan} Gentiles walk, {that is} in the futility of their mind, being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, the hardness of their heart; and they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness. But that isn’t what we learned about from our Christ. Since we have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, in reference to our former manner of life, we lay aside {sacrifice} the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, so that we may be renewed in the spirit of our mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God, has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. [paraphrase] God has a plan and purpose for all who have been given eternal life. His desire is to surround Himself with godly people; those who think, act like, and whose attitudes resemble those of God’s Son Jesus. Let’s turn again to 1st Peter, ch. 2; In verse 24 we read, that “He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds we were healed. [paraphrase] Healed of what? There are plenty of other passages that speak directly of physical healing, but this one primarily speaks of the healing of 3 our old sin nature that is filled with the knowledge of Evil. He did this so that we may become, according to 1st Peter 2:5-6 . . . living stones that God is building into His spiritual temple. What’s more, we are His holy priests. Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, we offer spiritual sacrifices that please God. So Let’s Go Back To the Beginning Of The Word And Look At Adam’s Original Nature. Adam was created in God’s image, he was created knowing only good. He along with Eve, made the choice of choosing to know evil, and evil first made itself obvious when Adam’s son Cain killed Abel. The Bible in Genesis 5:3, tells us that Adam’s next son, Seth, was not born in God’s image; rather, he took on the nature and image of his physical father, inheriting that propensity for rebellion and evil. Through Adam’s offspring, the predisposition for evil was passed on to all humans. Romans 5:12 confirms this thought, Therefore, just as through one man, sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned— We are all born in the Navigator's Definition of Latitude & Longitude: Latitude is where we are Lost, and Longitude is how long we've been lost at those coordinates! The Consequence Of Original Sin Introduced Death, But Christ Came To Bring Life And Restore All Willing Humanity. You will remember reading in Romans 7:24-25, where Paul asked this pertinent question: “Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death?” And then he rhetorically answers his own question; “Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!” We have a choice to make! For God’s Spirit, to again indwell humankind was made possible by Christ’s death and resurrection. The Spirit coupled with the Word of God can transform us, creating in us a new nature and renewing our minds. Or, we can remain as the twice dead heathen humanity. Romans 5:18 reads: So then, as through one trespass, there is condemnation for everyone, so also through one righteous act, there is life-giving justification for everyone. [HCSB] Here is the truth about assimilating our new nature, given to us by Christ’ Spirit. We can’t stay young forever, but we can remain immature for our entire life. Christian maturity is about the same, it is not relevant as to how long a person has been a pew warmer in a church. Christian maturity is based on how much like Christ, we have become. When others observe us, do they see Christ in 4 us; do our actions, behavior and characteristics resemble the Christ of the bible, or does our old nature come to the forefront, in any given adversarial situation. 1st Corinthians 6:9-11: “Don't you know that those who do wrong will have no share in the Kingdom of God? Don't fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, who are idol worshipers, adulterers, male prostitutes, homosexuals, thieves, greedy people, drunkards, abusers, and swindlers—none of these will have a share in the Kingdom of God. There was a time when some of us were just like that, but now our sins have been washed away, and we have been set apart for God. We have been made right with God because of what the Lord Jesus Christ and the Spirit of our God have done for us.” [paraphrased] It is not the individual sins that prevent us from coming to Christ, it is our reluctance to receive God’s free gift of His Christ’ propitiation. Continuing the thought in Colossians 3:10; In its place we have clothed ourselves with a brand-new nature that is continually being renewed as we learn more and more about Christ, who created this new nature within us. [paraphrased] I’ll bet there are very few men in heaven with whiskers. I believe that most of us will get in by a close shave. Life is more than just getting from one hospital to another, without messing it up too badly along the way. The goal of a life lived, is to become as Christ-like as possible, adopting all of His attributes, as we learn more and more about Jesus through His Word, and the course correction, accessible through His indwelling Holy Spirit. When people agree to the full forgiveness offered by Christ’s acceptable sacrifice [propitiation], God puts within them a new nature along with the fruit of His Holy Spirit. We are baptized with His Spirit, who then takes up residence in all true Christians. The Spirit’s task is to renew our flesh trained minds, and then according to Romans 12:2, bringing them into agreement with the fruit of His Spirit in our New Nature. In Titus 3:5 & 6 we read He saved us—according to His mercy, through the washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit. He poured out His Spirit on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior. We read in Galatians 5:22-24; Our new Christ-like nature is made up of the attributes of Christ’ character “ . . . the fruit of our new nature is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control . . . ; Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” [Our Spiritual act of Worship] We learn to walk in these ways by The Helper, Christ’ Spirit, renews our mind, restoring us to a state like that of the original creation. 5 The question is often asked, “Can a leopard change his spots. Few who utter the quote, realize that it comes from our Bible in the book of Jeremiah. When it is used, it is usually to evoke a resounding response of “No”, things cannot change their inherent nature. The Spirit wrote through the prophet Jeremiah to His special possession Israel; in response to their inquiry of why so many bad things are happening to them. God’s word says it is because all humankind have a predisposition toward sin and rebellion. God’s prophetic insight reveals that until the Messiah comes, and makes it possible for people to live by a godly nature, like that which was created in Adam, it was not be possible for humanity to have any significant change -- any more than a leopard can change its spots. Jeremiah 13:23 was speaking to men prior to Pentecost and God’s indwelling Holy Spirit. On this side of the cross it is now possible --- We read in the NKJV; Then may you also do good who are accustomed to do evil. God came to earth, incarnate through Jesus to make it possible for an evil man to be made good, what was required was a change in the very nature of man, just as if one were born again physically. Jesus said in John 3:3 . . . "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." The Spirit of Christ, through Peter’s pen, summarizes the New Birth in 1st Peter 1:3: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. We are dead to our old nature and able to be born anew because Christ paid the penalty for our sin debt, so that He could put His Spirit into all who will believe and receive Him. Christ’ Spirit brings along a New Nature filled with the fruit of the Spirit, the attributes of Christ. Now all that remains for us leopards to do is to allow the Spirit to renew our fleshtrained minds. And by the way, this is a life-long process of renewal that our Bible refers to as Sanctification. It is essential! Hebrews 12:14 warns us to “pursue . . . the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord. The Spirit shows us this narrow gateway to the Father’s approval in Romans 6:22; But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, is eternal life. . "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over 6 and expecting different results.” The human race as a whole is apparently insane because we continually repeat the historical past, and hope to reap better results. Christ came to prepare us for a restored life on refurbished earth, that we might be redeveloped to a level of perfection found in the Garden of Eden. He begins the regeneration with fallen mankind. This restoration requires acceptance of His propitiation (redemption) and a submission to the course correcting, mind renewing, chastisement of His indwelling Holy Spirit. Sadly, too many “Christians” reject this path, choosing self-reliance instead. Jesus said in John 15:4-5 "Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. 5 “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. To display the attributes of Christ, we must submit to the vine dresser. We began this dissertation by quoting Romans 12 and read that our minds must be Renewed, so that We May Stand Holy and Blameless before Him, as a facsimile of His son Jesus. An axiom about Problem Solving says; “nothing is as easy as it looks. Every solution breeds new problems.” The exception of course is Christ’ propitiation; Our salvation is just as simple as repentance and acceptance of Jesus; the one who has paid our sin debt in full, satisfying the penalty imposed by God’s Justice. We read in John 3:36: And all who believe in God's Son have eternal life. Those who don't obey the Son will never experience eternal life, but the wrath of God remains upon them.” That said, the Christian walk is not without its trials and testing’s. Jesus half brother James, writes in chapter 1:2-4: Dear brothers and sisters, whenever trouble comes our way, let it be an opportunity for joy. For when our faith is tested, our endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when our endurance is fully developed, we will be strong in our new Christ-like character, and ready for anything. [Paraphrased] The outcome of Sanctification is that we who overcome will be made perfect in our relationship with Christ. The crux of this is made clear in Colossians 1:22: yet He has now reconciled us in His fleshly body through death, in order to present us before Him, holy and blameless, and beyond reproach-- [Paraphrased] Our Lord Disciplines Those He Loves through this lifelong process of Sanctification -In order to receive directions from God, we must be able to receive course correction from His Holy Spirit. God illustrated on this principle through Job 7 before there even was a nation of Israel, therefore this should be applicable to all believers. In Job 5:17-27 he writes; “But consider the joy of those corrected by God! Do not despise the discipline of the Almighty when you sin. 18 For though He wounds, He also bandages. He strikes, but His hands also heal. 19 From six disasters He will rescue you; even in the seventh, He will keep you from evil. 20 He will save you from death in time of famine, from the power of the sword in time of war. 21 You will be safe from slander and have no fear when destruction comes. 22 You will laugh at destruction and famine; wild animals will not terrify you. 23 You will be at peace with the stones of the field, and its wild animals will be at peace with you. 24 You will know that your home is safe. When you survey your possessions, nothing will be missing. 25 You will have many children; your descendants will be as plentiful as grass! 26 You will go to the grave at a ripe old age, like a sheaf of grain harvested at the proper time! 27 “We have studied life and found all this to be true. Listen to my counsel, and apply it to yourself.” God Uses His Word As A Tool Of Transformation. The road to success is always under construction. A few years ago there was a popular quote going around that asks this question in every situation, “What would Jesus do” {Sanctification is teaching us what Jesus would do}. The born again person who has received a new nature and the guidance of God’s Holy Spirit is always under construction, as we become more and more like our savior. His Holy Spirit defines the principle in Hebrews 12:5-8: . . . "My child, don't ignore it when the Lord disciplines you, and don't be discouraged when He corrects you. For the Lord disciplines those He loves, and He punishes those He accepts as His children.” As you endure this divine discipline, remember that God is treating you as his own children. Whoever heard of a child who was never disciplined? If God doesn't discipline us as He does all of his children, it means that we are illegitimate and are not really His children after all. [paraphrased] So, when I first began to walk with Jesus I was very carnal, ruled by my flesh! As I spent time in the Word, and learned to listen to the course correction of His Spirit, I became more and more like Jesus (now this is the ongoing process of ). Sanctification It continues as a lifelong process of trials and testing. Am I there yet? No! as holy as the apostle Paul may have been, even he stated that he had not yet finished the race. 8 Sanctification Is Like Becoming A Powerboat For Christ Christian names are everywhere, but true Christian followers are hard to find. To begin with, Christians must carry around more than just a chip on their shoulders. Many marginal Christians believe that the Bible is truly a divinely inspired book, admirably suited to meet the spiritual needs of their neighbors. In truth, as dedicated believers, we should be more like ripening corn, the more we grow, the more lowly we will bow our heads. Some Christians are like tide stranded rowboats, they have to be pushed wherever they go. Others are like a sailboat that can be blown off course, with any foul wind of doctrine. The truth is; we all need to be like motorboats; making up our mind to set sail for Christ and stay the course; navigating Satan’s reefs, regardless of the tide, wind, or weather. Becoming a motorboat for Christ is as easy as telling Him we’re sorry for our past ungodly behavior, and now desire to tack a new course with godly bearings. If you have only receive John’s baptism, it is essential to be baptized in God’s Spirit, who will place within us a new nature that we may become like Jesus. As we grow in Him; at every rogue wave that threatens, we should all ask the Holy Spirit to renew our flesh-trained minds and seek His will. Here we go to Meddling This next placard states the main problem with the churches effectiveness, and it has to do with our personal witness and testimony. There are too many people who call themselves by the name of Christ, yet don’t want to be Christ-like badly enough to take up their cross and impale their flesh. If we want to know what a counterfeit bill looks like, we don’t study other counterfeits, we study the real thing. A Bible stored in our mind is worth more than dozens stored in a trunk. Christ is the real thing and if the church wants to become more like Him, it is imperative that we study the Word of God, the Christ of the Bible. We read in 1st Peter 1:23: “For you have been born again. Your new life did not come from your earthly parents because the life they gave you will end in death. But this new life 9 will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God.” The apostle John, who knew and walked with Jesus, has this to say about Him; John 1:14: So the Word became human and lived here on earth among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the only Son of the Father.” Our whole Bible is the Word of God. James 1:22-24 calls for submission! He writes, “And remember, it is a message to obey, not just to listen to. If you don't obey, you are only fooling yourself. For if you just listen and don't obey, it is like looking at your face in a mirror, but doing nothing to improve your appearance. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.” When we submit to the authority of His indwelling Spirit, we are putting to death our old nature. Colossians 3:10 again, reads; “In its place we have clothed ourselves with a brandnew nature that is continually being renewed as we learn more and more about Christ, who created this new nature within us. Sanctification is Embracing Our New Nature Success isn't how far we have gotten, but the distance we have traveled from where we started. There is a corresponding parallel in Christianity; Success in Christ’s church isn't how far up the status ladder we have scaled; rather, it is how Christ-like we have become from where we first started. Romans 12:2 again: Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. . . . Paul, speaking of the future, writes in 1st Corinthians 15:48-49; Just as we are now like Adam, the man of the earth, so we will someday be like Christ, the man from heaven. Now, we mustn’t wait for that day of transformation, where we will take on the immortality, to then begin the process of restoration and the purging of the evil from within us. We should begin allowing His Christ-like goodness to dominate even now. Let’s read Colossians 3:10 again this time to verse 14: In its place (our old nature), we have clothed ourselves with a brand-new nature that is continually being renewed as we learn more and more about Christ, who created this new nature within us. In this new life, it doesn't matter if we are a Jew or a Gentile, circumcised or uncircumcised, [were] barbaric, uncivilized, slave, or free. Christ is all that matters and he lives in all of us. Since God chose us to be the holy people whom He loves, we must clothe ourselves [ongoing] with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. We must make allowance for each other's faults and forgive the person who offends us. [Fruit of the Spirit] Remember, the Lord forgave us, 10 so we must forgive others. And the most important piece of clothing we must wear is love. Love is what binds us all together in perfect harmony. [NLT] Sanctification, Speaks to the Essentiality of His Indwelling Spirit If you are like I was, why not ask God for the missing piece of transformation? You may be more like someone who says: “I try to live up to my perception of God’s expectations for me; I asked for His forgiveness and believe that I am born again, but I still struggle trying to walkout a Christ-like existence”. The problem for many, like me, we were only taught a partial gospel; in that scenario, our understanding was only in the area of repentance and forgiveness. John the baptizer tells us that repentance, his baptism of repentance, while a necessary part of our salvation, is not the complete story. In Mark 1:8, we read; “I baptize with water those who turn from their sins and turn to God. But our Messiah is coming soon who is far greater than I am. . . He will baptize us with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” Have you receive the new nature along with His indwelling Spirit? It is His Spirit that gives us understanding of godly ways and thoughts, renewing our minds. Paul writes; 1st Cor. 2:14 “people can't understand these truths from God's Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them because only those who have the Spirit can understand what the Spirit means.” Having God’s indwelling Holy Spirit to renew our minds that have been trained only by our five senses, and changing our carnal way of thinking into godly thoughts, is absolutely essential for our eternal well-being. Sanctification – God Measures the Heart of Men When God measures a man, He puts the tape around the heart instead of our head or waist. 1st Samuel 16:7: . . . for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." The heart {not the muscle, rather, the center of our being} is the home of our emotions and attitudes. Proverbs 16:2 reads: All the ways of a man are clean in his own sight, But the Lord weighs the motives. Motives are generated in the center of our being; they manifest a method of carrying out their intent through our minds. God has given us a new nature with new attitudes when we invited His Holy Spirit to indwell us. After we were forgiven and made clean, then through sanctification, He begins bringing our minds into agreement with our godly motives. Sanctification -- The Word of God Cuts like a Surgeon’s Knife 11 There are two kinds of folks in a church, those who agree with the Bible and those who are hypocrites. You have discovered the truth of this statement if you are one who agrees with the Word of God. The Bible says of itself, in Psalm 119:160; “The sum of Thy word is truth, and every one of Thy righteous ordinances is everlasting”. Jesus said; "Sanctify them in the truth; Thy word is truth.” People never reject the Bible because it contradicts itself, but because it contradicts them. Our Scriptures teach us, Living by the way of Scripture is the best way to live, the noblest way to endure, and the most comfortable way of dying. In conclusion Hebrews 4:12: “For the word of God is full of living power. It is sharper than the sharpest knife, cutting deep into our innermost thoughts and desires. It exposes us for what we really are”. The Word stored in our heart is moved to our mind by meditation, trials and tribulations We thank you for the presence of Your Spirit, the counselor, the one who will take your Word that is being hidden in our hearts and use it to train our minds, so that we may grow and mature, becoming more and more like Jesus each day. We can only ask that it will penetrate deeply in the minds of those who struggle to live lives pleasing to You. We raise our hands, and open our hearts saying, “Come Lord Jesus, Come quickly.” If there is reading this that has never invited, nor understood the need to be baptized in the Spirit, by inviting your Spirit to indwell them may they do so now. Having been “Baptized with the Spirit,” may they rejoice that He is more than willing to come. So, Come Holy Spirit, Come and renew our minds, equip us to share our testimony of your love with our friends and neighbors, that they may also know You. 12
