The Bouncing Bomb
Cub Scouts in the 1st Dorking (St Martin’s) Scout Group touched a piece of
history at a recent meeting. Sir Barnes Wallis, the scientist, engineer
and inventor, carried out his first experiments on his idea for a
“bouncing bomb” in the garden of his house in Effingham. His
daughter, Elisabeth, helped him to set up a tin bath full of water across
which he fired her toy marbles to test his theories.
Further experiments
were subsequently
performed at the Test
Tank at the National
Physical Laboratory at
Teddington and with
full scale prototypes at
Chesil Beach, Dorset
and elsewhere. The
raid was carried out in
May 1943 the Möhne
and Eder dams were
breached as planned
and the Sorpe dam
Dr Barnes Wallis and his family with his first experiments - was damaged. Dr
Elisabeth is third from the left
Wallis was given an
inventors award but would not accept it as he was so distressed by the
loss of life instead he donated the money for the education of children
of RAF personnel.

New Scout hut underway
Construction of 17th Reigate (St. Joseph’s) Scout Group’s
new Scout Hall has now officially got “out of the
ground” as Father Chris Spain, Moderator for the Parish
of the Nativity of the Lord, laid the first brick on 16th
December.
Fr. Chris said “this marks a
milestone in the history of
17th Reigate which from its
earliest days has always had a
strong connection with the
Parish. With a strong
foundation I am sure that the
building and the life of 17th
Reigate will grow and
develop for future
generations of young
people”.
Mike Phillipson, Group Scout
Leader, commented “We are delighted to have finally
reached this stage. Our young people and adult
volunteers have worked tirelessly for almost three years
to plan and raise the funding for what will become the
first permanent home in the Group’s history. We would
like to thank all of our sponsors and donors who have
supported us – their generosity has been inspiring. We
are now praying for good weather to allow the building
to be completed in 2015 to coincide with our centenary”
The building will provide a large hall and a smaller
meeting room with kitchen, washrooms, and disabled
access for use by 17th Reigate and other local community
groups. The Group still needs to raise another £10,000
to enable the project to be completed; anyone interested
in supporting the project can visit the Group’s website
www.17threigate.org.
Congratulations
Elisabeth with the 1st Dorking Cub Scouts holding the marbles
used in the first experiments on the “Bouncing Bomb” and Vic
Viner (President of the 1st Dorking Scout Group)
We were very fortunate indeed that Elisabeth kindly agreed to join the
Cub meeting. She brought her toy marbles that were used in the first
experiments and pointed out the damage they had sustained as a result.
She also brought an original photograph showing Dr Barnes Wallis and
his family in the garden with his device to launch the marbles. This was
recreated in the opening scene of the 1955 film “The Dambusters”.
Elisabeth participated in the presentation to the Cubs on the technical
aspects of how the bouncing bomb worked and was released in
particular the mathematical solutions to the difficulties of ensuring that
the height of the Lancaster plane and its distance from the dam were as
accurate as possible.
At the end of the evening Elisabeth encouraged the Cubs to try to find
out how things work; to experiment with Lego, Meccano, sticks and mud;
and to live exciting and interesting lives.
It is with great pleasure that we announce that the
Chief Scout has made the undermentioned awards
in our County:

One update for the Directory:

As I write this (14th January) neither I nor the other members of
the Capitation Invoicing Team (Richard Shortman and Ian Hudson)
have any real idea how the census and hence capitation will work
this year with the results coming from Compass. As the deadline
for the youth upload has now been extended to 15th February
this puts our timetable in doubt. As, if and when we hear any
more we will be in touch. The published schedule (based on last
year’s times and dates) will hopefully stand but if any changes
have to be made, we will be in touch.
