2014 DISTRICT GIGHLIGHTS
BUCKEYE DISTRICT 2014 HIGHLIGHTS
Buckeye District has, once
again, achieved the Gold Level
for Journey To Excellence.
The Units in Buckeye are
continuing to deliver excellent
programs. The Gold Level was also earned by
56 (64%) of our Units - an increase of 14 units,
9 (10%) earned the Silver Level and 1 (1%)
earned the Bronze Level.
Activities - There were 3 Cub Scout Activities
in the District in 2014 attended by 542 Cub
Scouts - Webelos first Aid Meet, Belt Loop
Bonanza & Tiger Day. Boy Scouts had 2 District
Activities in 2014 - Survivor Klondike and Ride
the Rails Camporee attended by over 200
participants. Buckeye also had 886 youth and
adults at the Council Camporall - Thunderbase.
Advancement - The efforts of many volunteers
generate results: Buckeye District had 65 Scouts
earn the highest rank in Scouting, Eagle. In
addition, 639 Scouts advanced at least one rank,
1733 Cubs advanced at least one rank and 3214
Merit Badges were earned.
Camping – 450 Cub Scouts and 659 Boy Scouts
had a summer camping experience.
Commissioning - A total of 475 Commissioner
visits were logged in which 70 units received at
least one visit and 38 units received more than 6
visits. This exceeded the Gold Standard for the JTE.
We currently have 33 Commissioners in the
District. Attendance at Roundtables in 2014 totaled
618 from 63 different units. Roundtable attendance
has increased by 28% .
Finance - Our District made notable contributions
to covering the cost of providing Scouting in our
community. Last year we sold $626,528 in popcorn.
Our FOS campaign raised $147,622 to help support
Scouting, which, again, exceeded our Fundraising
Goal. Thank You to all of our generous supporters.
Membership - We ended the year with 3194 Scouts
in 46 Packs, 30 Troops and 11 Crews. Buckeye also
has over 1273 adult volunteers.
Popcorn - The TOP SELLER in the Council was
from Pack 11 at Wickliffe Elementary School Tyler R who sold $9,400 in popcorn. Four Scouts in
Buckeye were among the top ten sellers in the
Council.
Training- Buckeye District trained over 83
Scouters in BALOO and Webelos Outdoor
Workshop. Currently 47% of our leaders are
trained. If that number seems low, unit Key 3 Cubmasters, Scoutmasters, Committee Chairs &
Chartered Organization Members have the ability to
bring their unit training records up to date.
What makes our District great and fuels all of these accomplishments in service to our youth?
You and your units. Thank You and we ask you to continue delivering great programs, bringing more
youth into Scouting and having a great time in Scouting.
WELCOME TO BUCKEYE'S NEWEST DISTRICT EXECUTIVE
Give a BIG BUCKEYE WELCOME to Becca Schmidt who just joined Buckeye District on January 20. She comes from
a Boy Scout family: her brother is an Eagle Scout and her father is an Assistant Scoutmaster in the
North Star Council. Becca was born and raised in Minnesota and came to Ohio to attend Capital
University. After graduation, she moved to Anchorage, Alaska and worked as a program
specialist for a youth development agency. Becca is very excited to be getting started with the Boy Scouts and Buckeye
District! Contact Becca or at 614-310-1339.
NEW STUFF
ROUNDTABLE
BUCKEYE ROUNDTABLE
THURSDAY, February 5, 2015
BE THERE !!
On the average, 83 people are coming to
Roundtable each month. If you are among those
Scouters, thank you. If you are not, stop and
think “what are they getting that I am missing?”
Great programs, an enthusiastic staff, fantastic
fellowship, up to the minute information, ideas
on how to make your job in Scouting easier
while making the Scouts’ experiences better....
And more. Don’t be left out, join us at 7:00
pm at Northwest Christian Church, 1340
Fishinger Road, Upper Arlington on
Thursday, February 5, 2015.
This month Cub Scout Leaders will be
anticipating Spring with separate, age
appropriate sessions for Tigers, Wolves and
Bears centered on putting the Outing in Cub
Scouting; for Webelos focusing on outings and
camping; and for Cubmasters looking into the
ins and outs of Cub camping. Come and get the
details.
Boy Scout Leaders will be talking about one of the
eight methods of Boy Scouts - Advancement.
Advancement is the method of Scouting that is most
poorly understood by many parents and leaders. Dale
Karweik will explore the philosophy behind
advancement and will describe one way to make
advancement more meaningful and better integrated
into your troop’s program. The overall goal being to
produce more skilled and better prepared Scouts. This
session should be of interest to parents and leaders who
want the best for their Scouts.
Kim Pardi, Dale Karweik and their Assistant
Roundtable Commissioners look forward to welcoming
all the regular attendees and as many new people as the
building can hold. Join us at this circus of fun,
fellowship and information for unit Scouters and
Scouting families. We hope to see ALL Buckeye
Leaders at 7:00 pm at Northwest Christian Church,
1340 Fishinger Road, Upper Arlington on Thursday,
February 5, 2015.
INTERGALACTIC KLONDIKE WRAPUP
Over 316 Scouts and Scouters
attended the Buckeye District
Intergalactic Klondike on January
17th, including units from
Delaware, Arrowhead and Troop
635 from Dan Beard Council. 28 sledges
competed for the “Intergalactic Prize”. This
year we had an unprecedented tie of three
Patrols for First Place. The Space Monk Patrol
(from Troop 28), Falcon Patrol (T298) and Ice
Block O Patrol (T418) all had total scores of 49
points. First, Second and Third Place positions
were determined by each patrol's score for the
Crevasse Crossing time. First Place was
awarded to Space Monk Patrol (T28) with a
time of 11 min. and 14 seconds, Second went to
Ice Block Patrol (T418) with a time of 13 min.
and 40 seconds, and third place went the Falcon
Patrol (T298) with a time of 14 min. and 36
seconds. Congratulations to all units
participating. Great job by all! As announced at
the Klondike, Troop 243 Squid Patrol was the

CHAIRMAN'S CHAT
FAMILY FUN
To our fellow Scout leaders,
The nominating committee has made their recommendations and the district committee voted at the
January committee meeting. Your district committee has elected Kate Leaver to be the Buckeye District
Committee Chair for 2015. I congratulate Kate on her election and know she will serve the district well.
Kate has years of scouting experience, has served on many training programs and has been my vice chair
for the past year. Please welcome her to this new position and provide her with the same support and
guidance that you all have provided me for the past two years.
The committee has also elected the rest of the district committee and those results are listed in this
newsletter. A new organizational chart will be distributed soon so everyone can see the new organization
and be able to contact them as needed.
I wish everyone a successful, safe and hopefully an adventurous 2015 and beyond.
YIS,
Steve Bayer
I’d like to first of all thank Steve Bayer for showing me the ropes and I hope I can live up to all he did for
Buckeye!!
I am truly looking forward to this journey as your new Buckeye Chair. Since you are all my friends in
scouting, I hope you know I’m here to listen to you. I’m here to make Buckeye better and increase
scouting awareness. I know your time is valuable and I do appreciate all you do for our scouts.
I am actually working on a “Vision” and “ticket” and I will be sharing that with you so you know my
thoughts.
Looking forward to a great ride!
