Colonel M M Rai, commanding officer of 42 Rashtriya Rifles, and a policeman were killed in the gunbattle at Mindora village of Tral, 36 km from here, an Army spokesman said. He said two militants, both locals, were also killed in the operation which left a soldier seriously injured. Col Rai was among the gallantry medal awardees announced on the eve of Republic Day. He was awarded Yudh Seva medal for his role in a gunbattle with militants in south Kashmir last year, the spokesman said. The encounter broke out today when the police assisted by Rashtriya Rifles of the army launched an operation after getting a tip off that a local Hizbul militant along with another accomplices had come home. The slain militants have been identified as Adil Khan, a local resident of Mindora, and Shiraz Dar. Both were affiliated with Hizbul Mujahideen outfit, police said. Some arms and ammunition have recovered from the scene of the encounter. Meanwhile Governor N N Vohra, has expressed grief over the loss of lives of Colonel M N Rai of 42 RR and Head Constable Sanjeevan Singh of Special Operation Group, who succumbed to their injuries after being wounded in the ongoing encounter with militants at Tral in Kashmir Valley. Govt exempts tax on furniture, other goods destroyed in 2014 floods JAMMU, JAN 27: Jammu and Kashmir Government today ordered exemption of tax on replacement of furniture and other goods destroyed in the floods that hit the state in 2014. As ordered by the Governor, N N Vohra, the Finance Department has issued SRO 22 exempting payment of Entry Tax leviable under "Entry Tax on Goods Act, 2000" on furniture, office equipment and goods imported into the State by Hoteliers to replace for such goods as were destroyed during the recent floods. "The exemption shall be available upto February 28, 2015," official spokesman here said.
