‘splintered’ on religious lines: Obama for sustained growth
AGENCIES, JAN 27|15
New Delhi: Hours before winding up his three-day visit to India, US President Barack Obama on Tuesday made a strong
pitch for religious tolerance.
Invoking Article 25 of the Indian
Constitution that gives every
citizen the right to practice or
propagate his/ her religion,
Obama cautioned India against
efforts to divide society on “sectarian lines”.
It was a politically sensitive
message for India, though there
were no major political leaders
in the select audience of about
1,500 people, which mostly comprised students and scholars.
Addressing the townhall meeting at the Siri Fort auditorium
here, Obama said: “Every person has the right to practice his
faith without any persecution,
fear or discrimination. India
will succeed so long as it is not
splintered on religious lines.”
Obama devoted five minutes of
his 33-minute speech to the issue of religious freedom and diversity. “Your Article 25 says all

Twitter. ”At the same time the
Governor has ordered a massive
list of transfers in the police and

Omar said if the PDP and BJP
can come together for the Rajya
Sabha polls, why do not the two
parties cement the “marriage of
convenience”. “So what I don’t
get is if the @jkpdp & @
BJP4India can combine

when not just cement the
marriage of convenience,”
he added. Omar’s last
tweet was an an apparent
reference to the deadlock
over government formation in the state.
The assembly polls, whose results were declared on December
23 last, threw up a fractured mandate. PDP emerged as the single
largest party with 28 seats in the

RS Polls: Azad to be joint candidate of NC, Cong
YASH KHAJURIA
Jammu, Jan 27|15: The Na-
tional Conference (NC) on Tuesday decided to support Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad
as the common candidate of the
two parties for a Rajya Sabha
seat from Jammu and Kashmir.
The decision was taken after
a 30-minute meeting between
Congress chief Sonia Gandhi
and NC working president
Omar Abdullah in Delhi. A former chief minister of Jammu
and Kashmir and a former Union minister, Azad is the leader
of the Opposition in the Upper
House.
“The two parties have decided to combine forces to field
a joint candidate for RS polls
in J&K to snatch a seat from
the unholy alliance,” Abdullah
tweeted, making a pointed reference to the BJP and the Peo-
ples Democratic Party which
were trying to form a coalition
government in his state. Elections to four Rajya Sabha seats
from the state are due on February 7, coinciding with the Delhi
assembly poll.
The NC offer has put to rest
speculations about Azad’s renomination to the Upper House.
Abdullah’s party has 15 seats
and the Congress has 12 in the
87-member Jammu and Kashmir assembly after the December polls. The PDP is the largest
part with 28 MLAs, followed by
the BJP with 25.
Azad could get the support
of CPM’s Muhammad Yousuf
Tarigami and Peoples Democratic Front’s Hakim Muhammad Yasin. Congress sources
said two more Independents
might back him. The BJP announced its two candidates: former state president Shamsher
Singh Manhas and senior leader Chander Mohan Sharma.
The tenure of the term of the
four Rajya Sabha seats in the
state will expire next month.
The four members whose term
is expiring are Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Saifud-Din Soz (February 10) and
National Conference (NC) leaders Ghulam Nabi Wani and Mohammad Shafi (February 15).
According to a notification issued by the EC, the polls will be
held on February 7 and counting of votes is scheduled for the
same day. The PDP had named
Nazir Ahmad Laway and Fayaz
Ahmad Mir. Both have narrowly lost last year’s assembly
elections. BJP sources in Delhi
dismissed suggestions of an
agreement with the PDP for the
Rajya Sabha polls, but its leaders in the state the two parties
could win three of the four seats
together.
The elections could provide
the platform to form the next
government in the state, which
is under governor’s rule.
