Dr. Martin to present program on
Vietnam experiences
Few who attend Bladen Community College today were born when the
Vietnam War (often referred to as the Vietnam Conflict in some documents)
dominated the news and dramatically impacted the national conscious. On
Tuesday, February 10, at 11 a.m., Bladen County resident Dr. Tom Martin,
will give a presentation in the Library on his experiences while serving in
Vietnam.
A retired Army officer,
minister, and Vietnam veteran; Dr. Martin, a native of
Lake City, South Carolina,
holds a doctorate in Old Testament from Barrington University and has pastored
churches in North and South
Carolina. Most recently he
was the interim pastor at Centerville Baptist Church in
Kelly. In 2012 he retired
from flying the helicopter for
the Greenville (SC) hospital
system, where he was also a
bi-vocational pastor.
He is married to the former
Kay Pate Johnson and the
couple reside at White Lake.
The program is sponsored
by the Bladen Community
College History Club, which
presents a number of programs during the year.

Executive
Vice President
The Completion by Design (CBD) Student Success Leadership Team met at Sampson Community
College for a regional meeting on Tuesday, February
3. Members of the team are Bruce Blansett, Twyla
Davis, Lisa DeVane, Jeff Kornegay, Barry Priest,
and Anthony Thomas. Mr. Ed Bowling, Executive
Director, NC Cadre, CBD from Guilford Technical
Community College (GTCC) led the meeting.
Teams from the second cohort of colleges, like
Bladen Community College (BCC), were assigned a
facilitator. Ms. Tonya Forbes, Associate Vice President, Arts and Sciences from Wake Tech led the
BCC team.
Issues addressed with Ms. Forbes and later in the
panel discussion with all the facilitators were: intrusive or proactive advising; orientation or the “Front
Door Experience”; designing pathways for students;
and how to effectively communicate CBD efforts to
the larger campus community.
Several webinars are scheduled throughout spring
semester and a meeting at GTCC in May before our
final action plan is submitted to our college president. As our plan of action evolves the team will
share information about CBD in the coming months.

Christopher Conner - Math Instructor
Ask almost any student in any of Chris Conner’s math classes and they will tell
you that he is a “great” instructor. The faculty and staff around campus will tell
you he is a “great friend and co-worker.”
A native of Robeson County, Mr. Conner has lived and worked near his roots
throughout most his life. After graduating from Purnell Swett High School, he
earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from University of North Carolina Pembroke. He later earned a Master of Science in Mathematics Education from the
same institution.
Explaining how he became interested in teaching math, he said he had always
enjoyed math, and while in college he began to work at summer camps where he
enjoyed working with youth. This ultimately led him into the teaching profession.
He began his teaching career at his alma mater—Purnell Swett— where he taught
math courses for five years before applying for a position and Bladen Community
College in 2010. He came to BCC in August 2010 and initially taught developmental math courses. Upon the retirement of Ray Kruse in 2013, Mr. Conner began
teaching curriculum math courses.
In his spare time, Mr. Conner enjoys fishing, making music, and participating in
powwows. He has a background in American Indian culture with an emphasis on
native music. He is also deeply involved in church activities. He is a deacon and
the church’s aspiring worship leader/music minister.
Regarding why he likes working at BCC, he said, “One thing that drew me to BCC was that it is a small school that has a
community-like feel. I’m also from this area of the state, and it is easy to relate with the culture of the area.”
He and is wife, Kelsey, have a 2-year-old daughter and make their home in Pembroke.

The swimming Finn is back in the water for Foundation
The “Swimming Finn”, better known as BCC Human Resources Director Tiina Mundy, is back in
the water again swimming to raise funds for the Bladen Community College Foundation. With a
“new hip” and renewed vigor, she’s intent on exceeding her previous accomplishments in another
virtual 100-mile swim. She is challenging her friends to support her in this endeavor by pledging
25 or 50 cents per mile or perhaps even $1 per mile to support educational opportunities for BCC
students through the BCC Foundation.
Called the Finn Swim Challenge, this time the virtual 100 mile swim will be along the South Carolina coast. Tiina hopes her efforts will endow the Finn Swim scholarship. In the previous challenge, the effort raised $8,000. A minimum of $10,000 is required to endow the scholarship. To
pledge to the cause, call or email Foundation Director Linda Burney at 879.5519.

From the Green Technology Committee
We can go green in any number of ways, many of which
save lots of money over time. According to industry experts, 46 percent of home energy use is energy loss—
essentially no energy use at all! The following are a few
more ways to save money by conserving electricity.
 Turn down your thermostat in winter, turn it up in
summer. Each degree you turn down the thermostat
saves 3 percent in heating costs, while each degree you
raise the temperature of your air conditioner saves
three to four percent of cooling cost. By changing the
temperature by two degrees all year, you can save
about 2,000 pounds of CO2 a year.
 Cook with a slow cooker or toaster over whenever
possible. These appliances significantly reduce energy
consumption over time. Unplug appliances when they
are not in use.
 Use a laptop computer rather than a desktop and save
three-quarters of the energy use.

Job Shadow Day
Learning from the best
Tuesday was a special day around the
county. It was Groundhog Job Shadow
Day and eighth grade students from
around the county were at various work
locations observing people at work in
professions the students are considering
entering when they become adults.
Among those students were nine who
came to Bladen Community College. Six
of them were interested in the nursing
profession, one in biology, and two in
electrical/electronics. In photo at left,
students who have expressed an interest
in possibly pursuing a career in nursing
watch BCC Director of Nursing Sharon
Thomas show students how nursing students work with a mannequin patient simulator. In photo bottom left, electrical
instructor Victor Singletary explains how
to work with a piece of equipment. In
