January - Colorado State University

Clover Connections
January 2015
Leadership Development Conference
Leaders Must Re-Enroll
Every 4-H Leader must complete
enrollment every year. We have no
other way of knowing if leaders wish to
continue to volunteer from year to year.
Background checks are completed for
new leaders and can periodically and
randomly be conducted on veteran
leaders.
When a 4-H leader signs the online
enrollment form, they agree to abide by
the code of conduct.
If your club has a new
organizational leader for this year, the
new leader must be orientated for the
role by Nicole Wright, 4-H Extension
Agent. Please contact Nicole at:
[email protected] to schedule an
appointment to receive your training.

4-H Day at the capitol. At the conference, 4-H members divided
into groups with other kids from around the state, and created skits
for the No Bull Campaign, an anti-bullying organization. This year
the Junior Leader Club is offering transportation on both
Friday and Sunday for 4-H members attending the conference. The
transportation fee is $10. To reserve your spot for transportation

Leaders/Volunteers
Connecting for Youth
Larimer County has the most 4-H kids in the state of Colorado. Why not make our 4-H program the best in
the state as well?! Larimer County has the opportunity to host the 2015 Western Region Leaders Forum. This
event invites 4-H leaders and volunteers from Colorado and 12 other states to gather and share ideas, interact
with many diverse 4-H volunteers and staff and receive resources from multiple states – to use in clubs now!
Leaders and volunteers of all ages are invited to participate, network and learn in a new way. These events
are free. Larimer County will be a host site for all three sessions and will be connected to a live presentation to
hear from presenters from all over the region. Each event will start with light refreshments and collaborating
followed by the presentation. You can attend one session or all three.
Please visit http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c4aacad29a4fc1-connecting to register.
Youth Connect: At Great Meetings
Tuesday, January 27, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
The McKee 4-H Building, The Ranch
“That was a GREAT 4-H MEETING!” Be inspired by adults who help youth practice leadership at every
age, and have fun at club meetings while learning and conducting business. See ways that 4-H club meetings
are the right environment to include the essential elements: belonging, mastery, generosity and independence.
What other ways can members use to make decisions during club meetings? How should committees
work? Chris Clover will share answers to these questions and others. Every 4-H meeting can be GREAT!
Widening the Circle:
Special Connections with Guest Speaker Temple Grandin
Thursday, February 12, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
The McKee 4-H Building, The Ranch
Be inspired by 4-H alum, Temple Grandin (Colorado State University) as she talks about her experience
learning with autism. Then, with the help of an instructor from Kids Included Together (KIT), we will practice
skills and gain confidence in working beside 4-H youth who have special needs, such as physical, social, or
learning disabilities. Explore opportunities for working with a child’s family and school support systems. Understand strategies to recruit and engage youth with various levels of ability. Learn how to adapt 4-H activities
and make accommodation for youth with special needs.
Youth Connecting in Your Community
Monday, March 2, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
The McKee 4-H Building, The Ranch
4-H youth are philanthropists, advocates and leaders. These are a few ways 4-H members can be involved
in their communities. Be inspired by 4-H members in many states who have been creating a ‘revolution of responsibility.’ Volunteers will gain ideas about how to consistently include citizenship and community service
in every 4-H club and county meeting. Understand opportunities for youth to plan and share their passion
through opportunities in local, state and global civic engagement projects. Consider ways to use social media
to celebrate ways that 4-H members are involved and responsible.

Premises ID
Same as 2014: All MARKET Beef,
Sheep, Swine, Goat, Rabbit and Poultry
youth are required to have a valid Premises
ID prior to the fair entry date, in order to
show at the 2015 Larimer County Fair.
This does NOT apply to breeding animals.
Market Rabbits, and Poultry refer to all
meat pens/exhibits. There will be a place
on the Larimer County Fair 4-H Entry
Form to put your Premises ID number.
Did you show a market animal at the
2014 Larimer County Fair? If so, you
obtained a Premises ID and entered your
number on the 2014 Fair Entry Form. This
means that you already have a Premises ID
number and do not need to reapply for one.
If you don’t remember your number, you
can call the number below and they can
provide it to you. If you did not show a
market animal last year, you will need to
obtain a Premises ID.
It’s easy and free to obtain a Premises
ID. Call 1-303-921-7730.

to start practicing earlier, you are welcome
to come. Quiz bowl questions cover cattle,

Livestock Projects
Livestock Field Day
Meat and Pork Quality Assurance
The seventh annual Youth Livestock Field Day
will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2015 from 9:00
a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The event drew 300 youth from
Larimer County and the surrounding counties last
year and promises to be better yet. The day will
consist of 16 different workshop opportunities for
members ranging from livestock selection, nutrition,
record books, fitting and showing. Also plan to
attend the general session on ethics. This will be the
best opportunity in the spring of 2015 for all
breeding and market project youth to obtain their
Meat Quality Assurance/Pork Quality Assurance
training, which is a Colorado 4-H requirement.
MQA/PQA training will be available from 10:00
a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Field Day is open to all 4-H youth
and their families and covers Beef, Sheep, Swine,
Meat Goat, Rabbit, Poultry, Dairy and Dairy Goat.
Pre-registration online will be required by March 2,
2015. Details to follow in the February newsletter.
Who must take MQA? All meat animal project
members (even those who have animals that are pets)
must participate in a Meat Quality Assurance Program
(MQA) once as a Junior Member (ages 8 - 13 years
old) and once as a Senior Member (14 - 18 years old).
All new 4-H livestock members
Those who turned 14 during the 2014 calendar
Why MQA? It is a Colorado 4-H requirement and
the Larimer County Fair and Jr. Livestock Sale
Committee also require livestock members to complete
this program before they can participate in the 2015
Fair and Jr. Livestock Sale.
What is considered a meat animal project? Meat
animal projects include all breeding and market
livestock in the following species: Beef Cattle, Dairy
Cattle, Goats (Pygmy, Dairy Goat, Breeding Meat
Goat, Market Goat), Poultry (Geese, Duck, Chicken,
Turkey, Pigeon), Rabbit, (including Pet Rabbit), Sheep
and Swine.
What if I am taking the Swine project? To meet
Pork Quality Assurance (PQA) requirements, you must
do the following based on your age group:
Youth 8-11 years of age (Beginner): Attend
MQA/PQA training annually
Youth 12-14 years of age (Intermediate) OR 1518 years of age (Advanced): Certify/re-certify for one
year by attending MQA/PQA training OR can certify
for the entire age group by completing and passing an
examination at the appropriate age level. To certify by
examination, a minimum of 70 percent of questions
must be correctly answered. Therefore, we will test and
score all Swine youth on site following the hands-on
MQA/PQA activities this year. This will allow them to
be certified until they reach the next age group.
The Larimer County Fair and the Colorado
State Fair require swine exhibitors to be PQA certified.

Horse Sense
If your horse is still wearing horse
shoes, please make sure you check their
feet and pick out the “snow balls.”
Walking on them can damage their feet and
legs. Removing shoes for the snowy
months is safer for your horse and allows
their feet to expand. If your horse needs to
wear shoes year round, snow pads will
keep balls from forming.
Horseback Riding Logs
Larimer County will no longer be
offering a horseback riding hours program.
Keeping a personal journal of your riding
lessons and practice times can be a
valuable tool. You may wish to continue
to keep a log for your own purposes.
Horse Project Information
Horse Bowl Competition
Horse Levels Testing
Horse Bowl is an exciting, fast paced
knowledge competition, where teams from
clubs or several different clubs, compete
against each other. The winning senior
team will go on to the State Competition in
June. This is a great way to prepare for the
coming year and your next levels test. So
while the weather is cold and snowy, grab
your Horse Manual and join a team!
If you would like to join a team, but
your club doesn’t have enough horse/
horseless horse members to make a team,
contact me for help finding a team.
 Date: Saturday, May 2
 Location: McKee Building, The
Ranch
 Time: Check In at 8:30 a.m.
 Competition begins at 9:00 a.m. for
Juniors and Seniors
For more information, go to
www.larimer.org/ext, “4-H Youth
Development” then “Annual Member
Activities”. You may also contact Diane
Kern at [email protected]
Deadline for registration is April 10.
Level I written tests may be taken with any Certified Levels
Rater or at the Extension Office. All level II, III and IV written
tests need to be taken at the Extension Office. If you or one of
your members would like to take one of these written tests,
please call the office to set up an appointment, (498-6000). All
levels of written test will be offered at the end of the Horse
Management Workshops on March 18 and April 1, at 7:00 p.m.
Testing will also be available at the end of the Horse Levels
Field Day, April 18.
Level I and II riding tests may be taken with a certified rater
from our county. A current list of raters and contact information
can be found on the web page; www.larimer.org/ext, “4-H Youth
Development”, “4-H Projects” then “Horse”. A fee of $15 will
be charged for all riding tests taken with a rater within our
county. Please remember that riding tests for level III and IV,
regardless of the discipline, need to be taken with an “out of
county” rater. Upper level tests, levels III and IV, may incur
more costs, such as travel expenses. The fee will be paid
directly to the rater to thank them for becoming certified and for
their time they give to the 4-H program.
A list of certified raters from surrounding counties can be
found on our web site; www.larimer.org/ext “4-H Youth
Development”, “4-H Projects”, “Horse” then “Colorado State
Certified Levels Raters”. You may also call the office for
assistance in scheduling a test, (970) 498-6000.

gained in horse judging, horse bowl, speeches, and practical
horse management.
