Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Humility is so prominent in all the readings today that one might call today “Humility Sunday.” The First Reading
implores us to seek humility; the Responsorial Psalm affirms the blessedness of those who are humble; and the
Second Reading instructs us to not only lead all towards humility, but to do so in humility. We also see this humility in the Gospel. The Gospel of the Beatitudes is Christ’s hallmark of the Way and Who he is. It is an example of what we are to imitate and not merely mimic. It is the truth of who we really are, and who we are to become - always directed towards this Imago Dei that is in all of us. Pope Francis once said that the Beatitudes
are the Christian’s ID card. Blessedness is not an entitlement from God, but out of humility it arises from
us. Blessedness is how we make it right with the world, with creation, with each other. A Beatitude is grounded
in such an attitude of love that true “blessedness” is centered in Jesus’ perspective of humility.
There was an American doctor who wanted to use his skills where he could do the most good. The doctor decided to go Kolkata to work with Mother Teresa and her Missionaries of Charity. Once there he met Mother
Teresa and asked where he could be best put to use. She wrote something on a piece of paper, folded it in half,
and said, “Take this to Sister Priscilla.”
The young doctor took the note to the nearby "House for the Dying Destitute." He thought to himself that it was
just the kind of place a doctor should be. He imagined one day changing the sign to read "House of Hope for the
Living." He was going to make a difference here.
He met Sister Priscilla and gave her the note. She read the contents and smiled slightly. "Follow me," she said.
They walked through the men's ward, a large open space with rows of cots cradling people in great pain who
were skeletons with skin. This is where I should work, the young doctor thought. I can make a difference here,
but Sister Priscilla continued walking and they entered the women's ward. OK, this is where I can be useful. But,
they continued into the kitchen, where a modest lunch was being prepared. He thought the lunch was for him.
But they continued on, walking out of the building into the back alley. Sister Priscilla pointed to a large pile of
garbage that was so revolting the young doctor gagged. "We need you to take this garbage down the street to
the dump" she said. "The dump is several blocks down on the right. You can't miss it." The nun handed him a
shovel and two buckets. Then she was gone.
The young American was stunned. Didn't they realize he was a doctor? But he dug into the pile and carried
buckets of refuse to the dump. There he was amazed at the number of people swarming the area looking for
something to eat or for anything of value. By the end of the day the pile was gone and he was drenched in sweat
and stench. He walked back into the house to tell Sister Priscilla goodbye when he saw the sign on the doorway,
written in Mother Teresa's handwriting: You can do no great things - only small things with love.
"My heart melted," the doctor remembers. "It dawned on me that serving others is not about how much I know.
It's about attitude and availability to do whatever is needed - with love. I learned that shoveling garbage with love
is different from just shoveling garbage."
To become a people of the Beatitudes we embrace a spirit of humble gratitude before the God who gives, nurtures and sustains our lives. We must respond to such unfathomable love the only way we can - by returning
that love to others, God's children as we are, in whatever way we can, as a way of returning it to God.

Bishop-elect Timothy Freyer was elevated to the role of Auxiliary Bishop of Orange in a
solemn and ancient ceremony celebrated by our Most Reverend Kevin Vann, Bishop of
Orange, January 17, 2017 at St. Columban Church in Garden Grove. Auxiliary Bishop
Freyer will join Bishop Vann in caring for the multifaceted and complex needs of a diverse and growing Diocese of more than 1.3 million faithful.

Diocesan Wedding Anniversary Mass
All are invited to attend the Mass which celebrates
the joy of Christian marriage, but this Mass is especially intended for those celebrating 15+ years in
2017. It will be held on Friday, February 10, 2017 at
7:00 p.m. in the Arboretum at Christ Cathedral. Bishop Vann will be the celebrant, and anniversary couples will have the opportunity to take a photo
with him. Photos will be available the day of the

Cuarto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
La humildad es tan prominente en las lecturas de hoy que se podría llamar "El Domingo de la Humildad". La
Primera Lectura nos implora que busquemos la humildad. El Salmo Responsorial afirma la bendición de los
humildes, y la Segunda Lectura nos instruye no sólo a conducir a todos hacia la humildad, sino a hacerlo en
humildad. También vemos esta humildad en el Evangelio. El Evangelio de las Bienaventuranzas es el sello de
Cristo. Es un ejemplo de lo que debemos imitar. Es la verdad de quiénes somos realmente y de quiénes debemos
llegar a ser. El Papa Francisco dijo una vez que las Bienaventuranzas son la tarjeta de identificación del cristiano.
La bienaventuranza no es un derecho de Dios, sino de la humildad que surge de nosotros. La bendición es cómo
lo hacemos bien con el mundo, con la creación, y con el uno y el otro. Una Bienaventuranza se basa en tal actitud
de amor que la verdadera "bienaventuranza" se centra en la perspectiva de humildad de Jesús.
Había un médico americano que quería usar sus habilidades donde podía hacer lo mejor. El médico decidió ir a
Kolkata para trabajar con Madre Teresa y sus Misioneras de la Caridad. Cuando llegó conoció a la Madre Teresa
y le preguntó dónde podría ser mejor utilizado. Madre Teresa escribió algo en un pedazo de papel, lo dobló por la
mitad y dijo: "Lleva esto a la hermana Priscilla".
El médico llevó la nota a la cercana "Casa de los Muertos Desamparados". Pensó para sí mismo que era el tipo
de lugar que un médico debía ser. Se imaginó que un día cambiaría la señal para que leyera "Casa de la
Esperanza para los Vivos". Iba a hacer una diferencia aquí.
Conoció a la hermana Priscilla y le dio la nota. Leyó el contenido y sonrió ligeramente. "Sígueme", dijo. Caminaron
por la sala de los hombres, un gran espacio abierto con hileras de cunas acunando a la gente en gran dolor que
eran esqueletos con piel. Aquí es donde debo trabajar, pensó el médico. Puedo hacer una diferencia aquí, pero la
hermana Priscilla continuó caminando y entraron en el pabellón de mujeres. Aquí es donde puedo ser útil. Pero
continuaron hacia la cocina, donde se preparaba un modesto almuerzo. Pensó que el almuerzo era para él.
Pero continuaron, saliendo del edificio hacia el callejón. La hermana Priscilla señaló una gran pila de basura que
era tan repugnante que el médico se amordazó. "Necesitamos que lleves esta basura por la calle al vertedero",
dijo. "El vertedero está a varias cuadras abajo a la derecha." La monja le entregó una pala y dos baldes. Luego se
fue.
El joven americano quedó atónito. ¿No se dieron cuenta de que era médico? Pero él cavó en el montón y llevó
baldes de basura al vertedero. Allí se sorprendió por el número de personas que pululaban por la zona en busca
de algo para comer o para cualquier cosa de valor. Al final del día la pila se había ido y estaba empapado en
sudor y hedor. Regresó a casa para decir adiós a la hermana Priscila cuando vio el letrero en la puerta, escrito
con la letra de la Madre Teresa: No puedes hacer grandes cosas, sólo pequeñas cosas con amor.
"Mi corazón se derritió", recuerda el médico. "Me di cuenta de que el servicio a los demás no se trata de saber
cuánto sé, sino de actitud y disponibilidad para hacer lo que sea necesario, con amor. Aprendí que limpiar con
pala la basura con amor es diferente a sacar la basura".
Para llegar a ser un pueblo de las Bienaventuranzas aceptamos un espíritu humilde ante el Dios que da, nutre y
sostiene nuestras vidas. También es responder a ese amor insondable de la única manera que podemos devolviendo ese amor a otros, los hijos de Dios como somos, De cualquier manera que podamos, como una
manera de devolverlo a Dios.

Felicidades a nuestro recien ordenado obispo auxiliar Timothy Freyer
Nativo de Huntington Beach y sacerdote de la diócesis de Orange durante los últimos 27
años, el obispo electo Timothy Freyer fue elevado al papel de obispo auxiliar de Orange
en una solemne y antigua ceremonia. La cual fue celebrada por nuestro obispo el
reverendo Kevin Vann el 17 de enero del 2017 en la iglesia de St. Columban en Garden
Grove. El Obispo auxiliar Freyer se unirá al Obispo Vann en el cuidado de las
necesidades multifacéticas y complejas de una diócesis diversa y creciente de más de 1.3
millones de fieles.

Có thể nói hôm nay là “Chúa Nhật Khiêm Nhường.” Khiêm nhường là điểm đậm nét trong các bài đọc của Chúa
Nhật này: bài đọc Thứ Nhất khuyên nhủ chúng ta tìm kiếm khiêm nhường; trong Thánh Vịnh Đáp Ca xác quyết
điều chúc phúc cho những ai khiêm tốn, trong Bài Đọc Thứ Hai dạy chúng ta không những hướng mọi sự về
khiêm nhường, mà còn thực hành mọi sự trong khiêm nhường. Dĩ nhiên, bài Phúc Âm nói về những Điều Phúc là
Hiến Chương và là Con Người của Chúa Giê-su, điều mà chúng ta phải noi gương (không có nghĩa là nhái theo),
và đó là sự thật về chúng ta, và chúng ta phải trở nên như thế-luôn luôn hướng về Hình Ảnh Thiên Chúa trong mỗi
người chúng ta. Thật vậy, Đức Giáo Hoàng Phan-xi-cô có lần đã nói rằng Những Mối Phúc là giấy căn cước của
người Ki-tô hữu. Lời chúc phúc không là điều đương nhiên Chúa ban, nhưng chúng ta chỉ có được từ sự khiêm
nhường. Sự chúc phúc khi chúng ta sống đúng với thế giới, với tạo vật, và với nhau. Lời chúc phúc có nền tảng
trong thái độ yêu thương mà sự chúc phúc thật sự có trung tâm trong cái nhìn khiêm nhường của Chúa Giê-su.
Một câu chuyện về một bác sĩ Hoa Kỳ, để xử dụng đúng khả năng của mình, đã tình nguyện đi làm việc tại Kolkata
với Mẹ Tê-rê-sa và các Sơ Bác Ái. Ông gặp Mẹ Tê-rê-sa và xin làm việc chỗ cần ông nhất. Mẹ viết vài chữ trên
mảnh giấy, gấp lại làm đôi, và nói, “hãy cầm lấy giấy này trao cho Sơ Priscilla.”
Người bác sĩ trẻ mang tờ giấy đến “Căn Nhà Dành Cho Những Người Chết Trong Tuyệt Vọng” gần đó. Ông nghĩ
rằng đó chính là nơi ông phải phục vụ. Ông tưởng tượng về một ngày sẽ thay đổi bảng tên thành “Tòa Nhà Hi
Vọng Cho Những Người Sống.” Ông quyết tâm thực hiện sự thay đổi này.
Ông gặp Sơ Priscilla và đưa cho Sơ tờ giấy. Sơ đọc dòng chữ và mỉm cười. Sơ nói: “Hãy theo tôi.” Họ bước đi
qua khu dành cho quí ông, một khoảng trống rộng rãi với những hàng nhà tranh dành cho những người đau đớn
chỉ còn da bọc xương. Đây là nơi tôi sẽ làm việc hay sao, người bác sĩ trẻ suy nghĩ như vậy. Tôi sẽ thực hiện sự
khác biệt cho chỗ này. Nhưng Sơ Priscilla tiếp tục bước tới và họ đi vào khu dành cho quí bà. Đúng đây là chỗ
cần tôi phục vụ. Tuy nhiên họ tiếp tục bước tới khu nhà bếp nơi một bữa cơm trưa tầm thường đã được dọn sẵn.

“Thùng rác cách chỗ này một khoảng xa phía bên phải. Ông không thể không nhìn thấy đâu.” Sơ đưa cho ông cái
xẻng và hai chiếc giỏ. Xong rồi Sơ bỏ đi.
Người Mỹ trẻ sững sờ. Không biết ông ta là một bác sĩ sao? Nhưng ông đã đào đống rác và mang hai giỏ đến
thùng rác. Ông rất lấy làm ngạc nhiên khi thấy một số người đào xới tìm kiếm chút gì để ăn, hay tìm một cái gì đó
giá trị. Vào lúc cuối ngày, đống rác hết sạch, và người ông ướt đẫm mồ hôi và mùi thối. Khi ông trở về gặp Sơ
Priscilla để chào, ông thấy một hàng chữ trên cửa, chữ do tay Mẹ Tê-rê-sa viết: Bạn có thể làm được những việc
không trọng đại, chỉ những việc nhỏ với tình yêu.
Người bác sĩ nhớ lại, “Con tim của tôi đã mềm nhũn.” “Còn lại trong tôi là phục vụ người khác không tuỳ thuộc vào

Để trở thành người của Ân Phúc chúng ta cần phải mang lấy tinh thần khiêm nhường biết ơn trước Thiên Chúa là
Đấng ban ơn, nuôi dưỡng, và duy trì cuộc sống của chúng ta, và đáp trả lại tình yêu cao vời bằng một cách duy
nhất là trả lại tình yêu đó cho người khác, con cái của Thiên Chúa, trong bất cứ điều gì chúng ta có thể làm được,
như là cách thể đáp trả lại cho Thiên Chúa.
Đền Đức Mẹ Lavang tại Nhà Thờ Chính Toà
Sống đạo giữa nhiều sắc dân thiểu số khác nhau với nhiều Đức Mẹ của nhiều dân tộc, nhưng Đức Gíam Mục
địa phận đã chọn Mẹ Lavang, Mẹ Việt Nam cho khuôn viên nhà thờ chính toà. Đây là một hồng phúc Chúa
dành cho người Việt Nam của chúng ta. Trong tương lai, khi nhà thờ chính toà hoàn tất, Đền Mẹ Lavang chắc
chắn sẽ là một địa danh mà các du khách ghé qua để tham quan, thăm viếng, và cầu nguyện. Trong đó, nhiều
con dân Việt Nam từ khắp nơi, kể cả Việt Nam sẽ tuôn đến kính viếng Mẹ.
Trong tương lai, Giáo Xứ sẽ phát động quĩ xây dựng Đài Mẹ Lavang để đón nhận tình yêu của giáo dân tại Cộng Đoàn
Thánh Phêrô, Gíao Xứ Thánh Thể Westminster. Nhân tiện mùa Xuân sắp đến, chúng ta sắm quà Tết thăm hỏi thân nhân.
