LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR
Dear Parishioners,
There are two ways that we can live out our Catholic faith.
We can live it passively, or we can live it personally. When
we live our faith passively, we are like the Pharisees and
Sadducees that came to be baptized by John in the Jordan
River. They were the religious and social leaders in Israel.
They were the most visible and active members of their
parish. They knew what to do when they went to Church,
they knew all the prayers - on the surface, they appeared to
be models of religion. They placed their confidence in being
"children of Abraham." In other words, culturally speaking,
they were good Jews. They came from Jewish families and
followed Jewish customs.
But John the Baptist warns them that being cultural Jews
wasn't enough. "God can raise up children of Abraham from
these stones," he says. Their religion was on the surface: it
didn't touch their hearts. We are constantly tempted to make
the same mistake. Little by little, we can become too selfsatisfied just because we come to Mass, receive the
sacraments, go to Catholic schools... We can become
complacent because we look like model Catholics on the
outside, cultural Catholics. But our faith is about much more
than that. To be Catholic is to be Christian, to be an active,
dedicated, energetic follower of Jesus Christ, to have a
personal friendship with him, to know him deeply and to
love him passionately by striving to build up his Kingdom.
When we live our faith passively, we are like artificial plants:
we look nice, but we bear no fruit. Today, Christ is reminding
us to live our faith more personally, so that our lives can be
branches of the true vine, "producing good fruit."
One way to live our faith less passively and more personally
has to do with a value, or a virtue, central to the season of
Advent. St Paul puts the spotlight on it in the 2nd Reading
from the Letter to the Romans. He writes that, "Whatever was
written previously was written for our instruction, that by
endurance and by the encouragement of the Scriptures we
might have hope." In other words, the history of God's
saving action among men, which we turn our attention to
during Advent, should stir up within us an energetic
supernatural optimism - what St Paul calls "hope". Hope is
the opposite of discouragement and pessimism. Hope is the
confidence that no matter how dark it may get in the middle
of winter, the light of Christ will never be extinguished. The
devil hates hope. He loves discouragement, because it
breeds cynicism and despair. He does his best to turn our
attention to the shadows and darkness, to the problems and
failures. Discouragement is the most paralyzing of vices. If
we give in to discouragement, our faith becomes completely
passive, completely impersonal. How can we beat the devil,
stir up the virtue of hope, and escape from the paralysis of
cynicism and discouragement? There is a simple way: stop
complaining. Much is wrong in the world, the Church, and
our own lives. But complaining fixes nothing and draws our
attention to the darkness. To be people of Christian hope, we
must learn to turn our complaints into construction projects,
to never mention a problem without at the same time
proposing a solution. That's how true Christians think and
live, because they are personal friends of Christ the Lord,
whose power and wisdom are without limit.

CARTA DE NUESTRO PÁRROCO
Queridos Parroquianos,
Hay dos maneras de que podamos vivir nuestra fe católica.
Podemos vivirla pasivamente, o vivirla personalmente. Cuando
vivimos nuestra fe pasiva, nosotros somos como los fariseos y
saduceos que venían a ser bautizados por Juan en el río Jordán.
Eran los líderes religiosos y sociales en Israel. Eran los más visibles y
activos miembros de su parroquia. Sabían qué hacer cuando iban a
la iglesia, conocían todas las oraciones - en la superficie, parecen
ser modelos de la religión. Colocaron su confianza en ser "hijos de
Abraham". En otras palabras, culturalmente hablando, eran buenos
judíos. Venían de familias judías y había seguido las costumbres
judías.
Pero Juan el Bautista les advierte que siendo judíos culturales no es
suficiente. "Dios puede levantar los hijos de Abraham de estas
piedras", dice. Su religión estaba en la superficie: pues tocaba sus
corazones. Somos constantemente tentados a cometer el mismo
error. Poco a poco, podemos llegar a estar demasiado satisfechos
de nosotros mismos sólo porque venimos a Misa, recibimos los
sacramentos, y vamos a las escuelas católicas... Podemos llegar a
ser complacientes porque nos ven como a los católicos en el
exterior, los católicos culturales. Pero nuestra fe es mucho más que.
Ser católico es ser cristianos, ser seguidores activos, dedicados, y
enérgicos seguidores de Jesucristo, para tener una amistad
personal con él, conocerlo profundamente y amarlo con pasión por
esforzarse en construir su reino. Cuando vivimos nuestra fe pasiva,
nosotros somos como plantas artificiales: nos ven bien, pero no hay
fruto. Hoy en día, Cristo es quien nos recuerda de vivir nuestra fe
más personalmente, para que nuestras vidas pueden ser ramas de
la
vid
verdadera,
"producir
buen
fruto."
Una manera de vivir nuestra fe menos pasiva y más personalmente
tiene que ver con un valor o una virtud, centrada en la estación de
Adviento. San Pablo se enfoca en la 2nd Lectura de la carta a los
romanos. Escribe que, "lo que fue escrito anteriormente fue escrito
para nuestra enseñanza, que por resistencia y por la consolación de
las escrituras, tengamos esperanza." En otras palabras, la historia
de acción salvadora de Dios entre los hombres, que volvamos
nuestra atención durante el Adviento, debe despertar dentro de
nosotros un optimismo sobrenatural una energía - lo que San Pablo
llama "la esperanza". Esperanza es el contrario de desaliento y
pesimismo. Esperanza es la confianza que no importa lo oscuro que
puede estar en pleno invierno, la luz de Cristo nunca se extingue. El
diablo odia la esperanza. Y ama el desaliento, porque engendra el
cinismo y la desesperación. Lo hace llamando nuestra atención a las
sombras y a la oscuridad, a los problemas y fracasos. El desaliento
es más paralizante de los vicios. Si cedemos al desaliento, nuestra
fe se vuelve totalmente pasiva, totalmente impersonal. ¿Cómo
podemos vencer al diablo, despertar la virtud de la esperanza y
escapar de la parálisis del cinismo y el desaliento? Hay una forma
sencilla: deja de quejarte. Muchas cosas están mal en el mundo, la
iglesia y nuestra propia vida. Pero quejarse no soluciona nada y
solo nos lleva a la oscuridad. Para ser gente de esperanza cristiana,
debemos aprender a convertir nuestras quejas en proyectos de
construcción, nunca hablar de un problema sin al mismo tiempo
proponer una solución. Eso es como los cristianos piensan y viven,
porque son amigos de Cristo el Señor, cuyo poder y sabiduría no
tiene límites.

darkness have seen a great
light! Upon those who dwelt in

land of gloom a light has shone.” (Isaiah 9:1)
Read at Christmas Midnight Mass.
The theme of the painted panels attempts to capture
the Advent anticipation of the Lord’s coming, in
graduation of color (dark to light) , simple shapes,
and to express this mood of anticipation in a modern
art form, to express the soulful longing of the ages in
contemporary non-objective art and the belief that
modern art can enhance the worship space. These
panels were first exhibited in St. Jerome Parish in
1982, one panel per Sunday.
Week One, Panel One – into the gloomy unsaved
matter (humanity) the inkling of light begins to dawn.
The ancient Promise of a Savior begins to
materialize! Stay awake! Your Salvation draweth
neigh!
Week Two, Panel Two – The earth was in spiritual
darkness but prophecies of Isaiah speak of great
hope and promise. On the second panel the Light of
Christ intensifies!

hispana, es una noche de velación, alabanza y oración al Santísimo
Sacramento durante 10 horas donde se invitan a los grupos y
movimientos de jóvenes adultos que son parte de nuestra Arquidiócesis.
Es organizada en su totalidad por los jóvenes adultos hispanos (18-35)
de los varios grupos y movimientos que están bajo la dirección de la
Oficina de Jóvenes Adultos y Pastoral Universitaria. El estilo litúrgico
que se experimenta y se vive durante la noche se caracteriza por la
alabanza y adoración carismática. El evento atrae a más de 900 jóvenes
adultos y a más de 400 adultos cada año. Al amanecer cierra con la
celebración Eucarística del domingo. Se llevará a cabo en el Centro
Católico Carismático, localizado en el 1949 Cullen Blvd., Houston, TX
77023 comenzando el sábado, 21 de enero a las 7:00 p.m. y terminando
el domingo, 22 de enero a las 6:00 a.m. del 2017. La misa será a las 6:30
a.m., celebrante: Su Eminencia Daniel Cardenal DiNardo. Recuerden
que es un evento para toda la comunidad y es totalmente gratis.
