While our “Christian” minds tell us to be sorry and even pray for the person, a little voice inside our heads may also be saying, “I’m glad I would never do anything like that.” And perhaps we wouldn’t. But are there some things we do that are still not pleasing in God’s eyes? Today’s readings caution us not to look so intently at someone else’s wrongdoing that we overlook our own weaknesses and shortcomings. When we measure ourselves against the worst people we can think of, we come out looking pretty good. There is a danger, however, in using someone else’s behavior as a way of reflecting our own goodness. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The LORD is a God of justice who hears the cry of the oppressed, the orphan, the widow, the lowly (Sirach 35:12-14, 16-18). Psalm — The Lord hears the cry of the poor (Psalm 34). Second Reading — The crown of righteousness awaits me (2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16 -18). Gospel — The tax collector stood at a distance, beat his breast, and prayed, “O God, be merciful to me, a sinner” (Luke 18:9-14). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Eph 4:32 — 5:8; Ps 1:1-4, 6; Lk 13:10-17 Eph 5:21-33 or 5:2a, 25-33; Ps 128:1-5; Lk 13:18-21 Wednesday: Eph 6:1-9; Ps 145:10-14; Lk 13:22-30 Thursday: Eph 6:10-20; Ps 144:1b, 2, 9-10; Lk 13:31-35 Friday: Eph 2:19-22; Ps 19:2-5; Lk 6:12-16 Saturday: Phil 1:18b-26; Ps 42:2, 3, 5cdef; Lk 14:1, 7-11 Sunday: Wis 11:22 — 12:2; Ps 145:1-2, 8-11, 13-14; 2 Thes 1:11 — 2:2; Lk 19:1-10 Monday: Tuesday: Thank You, Buds Blooms & Beyond for your donation of flower arrangements for our church and chapel 11234 W. On this 90th World Mission Sunday, your role is critical in reminding your parish family of our common missionary call. We have the opportunity to change the world through merciful acts as our prayers and sacrifices accompanying the good works carried out in Mission Churches across the globe. This annual gift, gathered through the World Mission Sunday collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, supports missionaries serving in more than 1,111 mission dioceses, each of which fervently needs help to provide service and spiritual comfort for the poorest and most vulnerable, sanctifying them with the Sacraments and offering the Lord’s hope and peace. Today we celebrate World Mission Sunday when we are invited to support the 1,111 mission dioceses around the world. Please keep the missions in your prayers and please be generous in today’s collection. Interested in Becoming Catholic? Is God calling you? Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 23, 2016 A Message from our ICS Altar Servers! I began to altar serve in 5th grade and now I am in 8th grade. I am sad to be graduating because I won’t get to volunteer for school masses. When I altar serve I feel like I can be myself, even though I can be a bit shy in school. I like altar serving because I can tell everyone I am CATHOLIC AND PROUD when I wear those clothes! Showing my faith is the best thing I can do. In my life, I feel that faith comes first, and then I can worry about other things later. I am very proud to be Catholic. - Sophie Ramos, ICS Altar Server & Student Getting to altar serve is a privilege because I get to be with God on the altar. I started altar serving in 5th grade and now I am in 8th grade. When I altar serve I feel special, but everyone is equally as special. This year I will be graduating, but I will still serve on the weekends because I go to this Church as well as this School. If you like to serve God there are many ways to do so… you could be a Eucharistic Minister, a sacristan and much more. Life is short, so serve God because we all have one goal. That goal is to get to heaven. - Erik Rosario, ICS Altar Server & Student ALTAR SERVERS - Jennifer Clavell - 813-244-8039 or José Clavell – 813-244-8053 EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS - If you would like to join this ministry contact Frank Salamone Phone: 813-205-8259 Email: [email protected] READERS - Fr.
