Two of those Sisters (Sister Carita, O.P. and Sister Catherine, O.P.) along with dozens of OHR-students from the past, returned to Our Holy Redeemer for the 11:30 A.M. Mass on Sunday, 18 September where they successfully answered the questions: “Who made you?” and “Why did God make you?” Afterwards, they were “rewarded” for their correct answers with some late morning refreshments (courtesy of the Imperial Diner), and a tour down “memory lane” by members of the Our Holy Redeemer School-building’s current student body: boys from the De La Salle School. A great time, as you can see from the photos of the day on the front page of our bulletin, was had by all. All of the students and teachers associated with Our Holy Redeemer School are a good twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, and even sixty years older than they were when 87 Pines Street was their place of work and/or study. And just as annual check-ups over the years have surfaced a need for repairs, so too have annual check-ups done for Our Holy Redeemer School-Building. Over the past eight years of my Pastorate, those annual check-ups have revealed the need to replace outdoor steps and stoops, windows, boilers, tile, bathroom sinks and toilets, as well as the need for an additional dry well outside of Sumner Hall to improve drainage in an area that very often became unpassable after a rainfall. And while many of those items have been partially (outdoor stoops, windows, sinks, toilets) if not completely (boilers) addressed, the condition of the roof over all of these items has yet to be seriously assessed. That is until now. The portion of Our Holy Redeemer School-building’s old, leaking, and damaged roof that is scheduled for replacement in the first phase of a multiple phase project, is the flat roof on the south side of the building. Work on this portion of the school roof is scheduled to begin on 10 October 2016 and is expected to cost nearly $30,000. And since you have helped cover portions of school-building projects in the past, I am asking you to please help cover a portion of this school-building project today. A well-maintained Our Holy Redeemer School-building today, will help provide for a well-maintained world tomorrow! PUTTING A SCHOOL ROOF OVER OUR HEADS NAME: ___________________________________________________________________________________ OUR HOLY REDEEMER SCHOOL STUDENT/GRADUATE: YES NO TELEPHONE NUMBER: _______________________________________________ AMOUNT PLEDGED: $2500 $1250 $1000 $750 $500 $250 OTHER __________________ A SERMON OF POPE SAINT GREGORY THE GREAT 29 September - Saint Michael the Archangel We speak of nine choirs of Angels, because we know, by the testimony of Holy Scripture, that there are the following: Angels, Archangels, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Dominations, Thrones, Cherubim, and Seraphim. Nearly every page of Scripture witnesses to the fact that there are Angels and Archangels. The prophetic books, as has been noted often, speak of Cherubim and Seraphim. Four more orders are enumerated by Paul the Apostle, writing to the Ephesians, when he says, "Above every Principality and Power and Virtue and Domination." And again, writing to the Colossians, he says, "Whether Thrones, or Powers, or Principalities, or Dominations." When, then, we add the Thrones to those he mentions in Ephesians, there are five orders, to which are to be added Angels, Archangels, Cherubim and Seraphim, certainly making nine orders of Angels in all. It must be realized that "Angel" is the name of their office, not of their nature. For the holy spirits of the heavenly homeland are always spirits, but they cannot always be called Angels; they are Angels only when they are announcing something. And so the Psalmist says, "He who makes spirits His Angels," as if he said plainly that, when He wills, He uses as Messengers those spirits who are always His. Those who announce less important things are called Angels, and those who announce the highest things are called Archangels. And so not any Angel but the Archangel Gabriel was sent to Mary; for this ministry it was fitting to have the highest Angel, since he was to announce the greatest news of all. These Archangels are also given special names to describe their particular virtue. For Michael means "Who is like unto God?" Gabriel means "Strength of God," and Raphael "Medicine of God." Whenever something is to be done needing great power, Michael is sent forth so that from his action and from his name we can understand that no one can do what God can do. Hence that old enemy who through pride desired to be like God, saying, "I will scale the heavens, I will set up my throne, I will be like the Most High," is shown at the end of the world left to his own strength, and about to undergo the final punishment, as destined to fight with Michael the Archangel. Similarly, Gabriel was sent to Mary; he who is called "strength of God" came to announce Him who deigned to appear in humility to conquer the powers of the air. And Raphael is interpreted, as we said, "Medicine of God," for when he touched the eyes of Tobias to do the work of healing, he dispelled the night of his blindness. Apropos. From the September AD 1994 Parish Bulletin of Our Lady of the Rosary, Deerfield Beach, Florida. Selections from the Scripture, the Fathers, Doctors, Popes, and other great spiritual writers appropriate to the Church in our time. NOW A WORD FROM OUR SAINTS ABOUT ANGELS An Angelic Sermon From Saint Bernard Clairvaux "He hath given His angels charge over thee." O wonderful bounty and truly great love of charity! Who? For whom? Wherefore? What has He commanded? Let us study closely, brethren, and let us diligently commit to our memory this great mandate. Who is it that commands? Whose angels are they? Whose mandates do they fulfill? Whose will do they obey? In answer, "He hath given his angels charge over thee, to keep the e in all thy ways." And they do not hesitate even to life thee up in their hands. So the Supreme Majesty has given charge to the angels. Yes, He has given charge to His own angels. Think of it! To those sublime beings, who cling to Him so joyfully and intimately, to His very own He has given charge over you! Who are you? "What is man that Thou art mindful of him? or the son of man that Thou visitest him?" As if man were not rottenness, and the son of man a worm! Now why, do you think, He has given them charge over thee? -- To guard thee! With what great reverence should you treat this word! What devotion should you proffer it; what great confidence should you place in it. Reverence because of their presence; devotion because of their benevolence; confidence because of their solicitude. Walk carefully, in all thy ways, as one with whom the angels are present as He has given them charge. In every lodging, at every corner, have reverence for thy Angel. Do not dare to do in his presence what you would not dare to do if I were there. Or do you doubt that he is present whom you do not behold? What if you should hear him? What if you should touch him? What if you should scent him? Remember that the presence of something is not proved only by the sight of things. In this, therefore, brethren, let us affectionately love His angels as one day our future coheirs; meanwhile, however, as counselors and defenders appointed by the Father and placed over us. Why should we fear under such guardians? Those who keep us in all our ways can neither be overcome nor be deceived, much less deceive. They are faithful; they are prudent; they are powerful; why do we tremble? Let us only follow them, let us remain close to them, and in the protection of the God of heaven let us abide. As often, therefore, as a most serious temptation is perceived to weigh upon you and an excessive trial is threatening, call to your guard, your leader, your helper in your needs, in your tribulation; cry to him and say: "Lord, save us; we perish!" Angel of God, my Guardian dear; to whom God’s love commits me here. Ever this day be at my side; to light, to guard, to rule, and guide. Catholic ministries appeal “Now Hear This! Today’s Gospel informs our attitude, the attitude we must have as servants of God. One must have a sense of true humility and mission to really mean those words. We are blessed when we come upon someone like that. We feel that we are in another realm; we sense that we are standing on holy ground when we are in their presence. They themselves are filled with a sense of wonder, with the joy of God, for having been chosen by Him to care for part of His little flock. These brothers and sisters find hard to believe that God has honoured them to serve His flock in this manner. They truly understand the meaning of the Washing of the Feet. They live it day in and day out and they look for no praise or recognition in what they do. They are happy and honoured to be God’s “unprofitable servants.” Once again we find in the Blessed Mother a good example: “Behold the handmaiden of the Lord.” FAITH AND SOCIAL MINISTRY OUR HOLY REDEEMER HUMAN SERVICES (516) 868-8289 Hours: 10:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. 23 West Merrick Road, Freeport, NY (516) 623-3247 WINTER IS COMING! FAITH AND THE ROMAN MISSAL AND NOW A WORD FROM POPE PIUS XI (ABOUT THE ROSARY AND MORE) Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Collect Pour forth we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts, that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ Thy Son was made known by the message of an Angel, may, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection. Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. INGRAVESCENTIBUS MALIS ENCYCLICAL OF POPE PIUS XI ON THE ROSARY TO THE VENERABLE BRETHREN, PATRIARCHS, PRIMATES, ARCHBISHOPS, BISHOPS, AND OTHER ORDINARIES IN PEACE AND COMMUNION WITH THE APOSTOLIC SEE. (29 SEPTEMBER 1937) 1. More than once have We asserted - and We recently repeated this in the Encyclical Letter Divini Redemptoris (Acta Ap. Sedis, 1937, Vol. XXIX, p. 65) - that there is no remedy for the ever-growing evils of our times except a return to Our Lord Jesus Christ and to His most holy precepts. Truly, only He "hath the words of eternal life" (Cf. John, vi, 69), and individuals and society can only fall into immediate and miserable ruin if they ignore the majesty of God and repudiate His Law. 2. However, anyone who studies with diligence the records of the Catholic Church will easily recognize that the true patronage of the Virgin Mother of God is linked with all the annals of the Christian name. When, in fact, errors everywhere diffused were bent upon rending the seamless robe of the Church and upon throwing the Catholic world into confusion, our fathers turned with confident soul to her "alone who destroys all heresies in the world" (Roman Breviary), and the victory won through her brought the return of tranquility. 3. When the impious Mohammedan power, trusting in its powerful fleet and war-hardened armies, threatened the peoples of Europe with ruin and slavery, then - upon the suggestion of the Sovereign Pontiff - the protection of the heavenly Mother was fervently implored and the enemy was defeated and his ships sunk. Thus the Faithful of every age, both in public misfortune and in private need, turn in supplication to Mary, the benignant, so that she may come to their aid and grant help and remedy against sorrows of body and soul. And never was her most powerful aid hoped for in vain by those who besought it with pious and trustful prayer. 4. But also in our day, dangers no less grave than in the past beset civil and religious society. In fact, because the supreme and eternal authority of God, which commands and forbids, is despised and completely repudiated by men, the result is that the consciousness of Christian duty is weakened, and that faith becomes tepid in souls or entirely lost, and his afterward affects and ruins the very basis of human society. For more information please call (631) 243-2373 MENSAJE DEL PASTOR 2 DE OCTUBRE DE 2016 LA PRESENCIA REAL (Muchas Veces. Muchas Maneras.) YOUR FAITH The Apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” The Lord replied, “If you have the faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you. Who among you would say to your servant who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, ’Come here immediately and take your place at table’? Would he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare something for me to eat. … Is he grateful to that servant because he did what he was commanded? So it should be with you. When you have done all you have been commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.’” Saint Luke XVII: 5-10 Directions: Find the words below from today’s Scripture reading in the puzzle.
