Manassas, Virginia ALL SAINTS CATHOLIC CHURCH This year of 2016, our parish theme is I know well the plans I have in mind for you, says the LORD, … plans to give you a future full of hope. Jer 29:11 All Saints is a tithing parish, giving of our time, talent, and treasure so as to give glory to God. August 14, 2016 At the dedication Mass, the bishop anoints the altar with sacred Chrism, for, in a sense, the altar is Christ. The Preface for the Mass of the Dedication of a Church contains: [… Father most holy.] For you have made the whole world a temple of your glory, that your name might everywhere be extolled, yet you allow us to consecrate to you apt places for the divine mysteries. And so, we dedicate joyfully to your majesty this house of prayer, built by human labor. Here is foreshadowed the mystery of the true Temple, here is prefigured the heavenly Jerusalem. For you made the Body of your Son, born of the tender Virgin, the Temple consecrated to you, in which the fullness of the Godhead might dwell. Today, Sun., Aug. 14, we celebrate the 6th anniversary of the Dedication of All Saints Church on this date in 2010. In the local calendar of a parish, this feast day is observed liturgically as a Solemnity because of its significance to the parish. From early times the name ‘church’ has also been given to the building in which the Christian community gathers to hear the word of God, to pray together, to celebrate the sacraments, and to participate in the eucharist. When a church is erected as a building destined solely and permanently for assembling the people of God and for carrying out sacred functions, it is fitting that it be dedicated to God with a solemn rite, in accordance with the ancient custom of the Church.” (Ceremonial of Bishops, #864) You also established the Church as a holy city, built upon the foundation of the Apostles, with Christ Jesus himself the chief cornerstone: a city to be built of chosen stones, given life by the Spirit and bonded by charity, where for endless ages you will be all in all and the light of Christ will shine undimmed for ever. Through him, O Lord, with all the Angels and Saints, we give you thanks, as in exultation we acclaim: [Holy, holy, holy …] We are the living stones which God is using to build his Church. Such a wonder what God can do with us! Pray for the benefactors of this parish, living and deceased, who have contributed through their time, talent, and treasure to the building of this church. Due to their sacrifices, we have this wonderful building, All Saints Church, in which to worship and celebrate the sacraments. We thank you! Let us thank God that we have this beautiful church in which to worship and in which to give thanks and praise to God. The dedication of the church is important in the life of a parish because the altar, which is consecrated with Sacred Chrism (a Holy Oil), represents Christ who is the priest, victim, and the altar of sacrifice. Also points on the walls of the church were consecrated with Sacred Chrism to dedicate this sacred space to the worship of God and the Sacraments of the Church. I am away this weekend for a wedding and will be away visiting my parents this week. The completed church was dedicated by Bishop Loverde on August 14, 2010 with a Mass. When the anniversary of the dedication of a Church falls on a Sunday, this day is commemorated whenever it occurs outside of Sundays of Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter. Psalm 45 I mportant S acramental P reparation P rogram C hanges for 2016-2017 For this coming year, the Religious Education (RE) office has established a two-year sacramental preparation program. This means that children and teens who are receiving a sacrament will need to be enrolled in Religious Education class during their sacrament year and the preceding year. For example, a child who would receive First Communion in second grade in 2017-2018, would need to be enrolled in first grade for 2016-2017. This program will include the First Communion, Confirmation, and Christian Initiation sacrament preparation programs. 2016-2017: Program Transitional Year • This year, all children may be enrolled into their appropriate grade regardless of whether they completed a preceding year of religious education classes. This is to help families adapt to the new twoyear sacramental program. • Children who did not complete religious education classes for 1st grade or 7th grade will need to complete a transitional packet before they begin classes in September, 2016. This packet will ensure that the child has the adequate preparation they need as they approach their sacrament year. These packets are available in the RE Office. • Please note: If a child is scheduled to receive a sacrament in 2017-2018 they need to be enrolled into an RE class in 2016-2017 for their preparation year.
