SAINT MARY’S AND SAINT CHARLES BORROMEO PARISHES
Parroquias de Santa María y San Carlos Borromeo
May 22, 2016 /22 d e Mayo d e 2016
You enter this church… not as a stranger, but as a guest of God. He is your heavenly Father. Come, then, with joy in your
heart and thanks on your lips into His presence, offering Him your love and service. Be grateful to the strong and loyal ones
who, in the name of Jesus Christ, built this place of worship, and to all who have beautified it and hallowed it with their
prayers and praise. Ask His blessing on those who love His house of faith as the inspiration of their labor, rejoicing in the
power of the Holy Spirit, and may that blessing rest on you, both on your going out and your coming in.

SAINT MARY PARISH
My brothers and sisters in Christ,
Last Sunday, about forty people came to the Church for the
5:00 p.m. Organ Recital. I had bragged earlier in the morning at
the Masses that St. Mary’s has one of the finest old Hook and
Hastings organs around. At 4:00 p.m., just after I finished a
baptism ceremony, the guest organist told me that the organ was
not turning on. This is what organs do. Other organists who had
come for the music said they were not surprised. The organ
repairman, who came the next day, said this is what organs do.
Rather than just refusing to work before a regular weekend Mass,
they wait until right before a special concert. Anyway, the
problem was in the switches, and the organist and trumpeter have
generously agreed to come back this Sunday for a concert. So,
please come hear the music. It will be a great program. Mr. Fred
MacArthur will play organ accompanied by Richard Watson on
trumpet. It will be a varied program including works by Bach,
Torelli, Charpentier concluding with Handel’s Messiah. The
concert will last for an hour. Evening Prayer will follow for
anyone who wishes to participate, just as we prayed it last
Sunday.

EUCHARISTIC REVERENCE
With the Celebration of the Feast of the Body and Blood of
Christ coming next Sunday, it may be beneficial for every one of
us to examine our Eucharistic practices. This week and next, we
list some questions that we might ask ourselves. Even if Sunday
Mass is familiar, we cannot think that praying at Mass is easy or
automatic. Like any serious activity, it requires attentiveness and
thought especially because it is done as an act of love towards
God. Loving requires work! This Sunday, the questions focus
more on how we prepare for Mass and how we pray during
Mass. Next week, we will focus somewhat more on what we do
after receiving the Eucharist.
AREAS FOR EXAMINATION
How do I prepare to receive the Eucharist? Do I avail myself to
Confession when necessary? Am I a peacemaker with others
before going to Mass? Do I fast at least one hour before Mass?
Do I make an effort to arrive on time or beforehand to pray
quietly? How do I dress for Mass? Does my appearance reflect
my inner desire to honor God? Do I make the effort to pray and
sing? Is attending Mass a weekly priority or is it something I fit
in when possible? Do I look at my phone and messages before or
during Mass? Would I benefit from reading the Sunday Mass
readings online before going to Church? Do I invite others to
join me at Mass? Do I allow my children the gift of going to
Mass? Do I do what is necessary so that my elderly relatives and
neighbors can get to Church for Sunday? Am I friendly to the
other worshippers before Mass without interrupting them if they
are praying? Am I reverent when receiving the Blessed Host and
Chalice? Have I offered to help out in some way as an usher/
greeter, communion minister, server or lector, or am I waiting to
be asked?

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
As we celebrate the mystery of the Trinity we also realize the
mystery of how much God loves and cares for us each day.
Believing in this our lives can then overflow in thanksgiving and
praise.
May God give us the grace to be grateful for everything He has
given us and to show that gratitude by generosity to others and to
the poor.
O Holy Trinity, truly you are a God of mystery, give us hearts
filled with reverence for You. Truly you are a God of majesty,
give us hearts filled with humility before You. Truly you are a
God of presence, give us hearts filled with awe. Truly you are a
God of creative power, give us hearts filled with gratitude.
Amen.

READINGS FOR THIS WEEKEND
The Most Holy Trinity C 574
THE NAME OF GOD IS MERCY – POPE FRANCIS
Pope Francis has put together a book on Mercy. It is very helpful, so we continue to insert some of his thoughts.
Q: W hat are the m ost im portant things that a believer should
do during the Holy Year of Mercy?
A: He should open up to the Mer cy of God, open up his hear t
and himself, and allow Jesus to come toward him by approaching
the confessional with faith. And he should try and be merciful
with others.
CALVARY CEMETERY MEMORIAL DAY MASS

EUCHARISTIC PROCESSION NEXT SUNDAY
Next Sunday is the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ.
We will honor our city by blessing our downtown with the Holy
Eucharist as we follow the Lord in procession from Saint Mary’s
to St. Charles following the 11:30 a.m. Spanish Mass. There will
be time for adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at Saint Charles
and Solemn Benediction. This is always a great event for the
Church and an honor to bring God into the streets and city. If,
you are not attending, the 11:30 Mass, you are welcome to join
the procession by gathering at the front of St. Mary’s Church.
The procession should begin between 12:30 and 12:45.
HAITI CHURCH REBUILDING
We have always relied on the generosity of parishioners who
keep putting weekly donations in the Box for St. Peter’s Church
which is in the back of the Church. We are looking to have a
fundraiser, possibly a raffle, to see if we can raise more money
that they need at this moment. If someone has an idea for a fundraiser that we might do as a parish please let us know the suggestion. Thanks to everyone who has not forgotten the Haitians who
are still rebuilding from the earthquake of 2010.
The Most Holy Trinity
Santa).
