 A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR 
8 MAY 2016
CLOTHED WITH POWER FROM ON HIGH
Those of you who went to Mass on VI Sunday of Easter, heard Our Holy Redeemer tell us in the Gospel: “The
Advocate, the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you everything and remind you of
all that I told you.” A few days later on Ascension Thursday, Mass-goers heard Our Holy Redeemer say: “And
behold I am sending the promise of My Father upon you.” One week from today, the Church in Freeport and
universally throughout the world, will celebrate the coming of the promised Spirit when we gather for
Pentecost. (Don’t forget to wear something red to Mass that day.)
The coming of the Holy Spirit as Jesus promised, clothed the Apostles in the Upper Room with Power from on
high and thrust them into the world to do battle with Satan. Time and time again since that great commission,
Satan and all the evil spirits have been thrust into Hell by believers who clothed with that same Power, have
borne witness to Jesus, regardless of any mandate to do otherwise.
This month of May, the month dedicated to Mary, take the opportunity to turn to Our Mother of Perpetual
Help and ask her to assist our Bishops, Priests, and all the Baptized in their labours to unleash the Power from
on High that through her womb breathed new Life into a dying world two thousand years ago; the Power from
on High that through believers like you who turn to her, will raise that world to new Life today!
THE MEANING OF THE ICON
The icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help is the most widely known icon in the
world. This Sacred image has special meaning for the Redemptorists, who were
asked by Pope Pius IX to “make her known throughout the world.” Each element of
the icon has a special meaning.
ELEMENTS OF THE IMAGE
(as explained at www.redemptorists.net)
 Mary’s eyes, filled with compassion and love, are directed toward us.
 Our Lady is clothed in the colours of virgins (red) and of mothers (blue). These are also royal
colours.
 Jesus, depicted as a young boy, wears the colours of a king.
 The star on Mary’s veil reminds us that she is the dawn announcing the coming of Christ.
 Our Lady’s hands hold her Son securely, and her right hand directs our gaze to Him.
 The Christ Child grasps His mother’s hand as though He is frightened by what He sees.
 In His hurry to reach His mother, Jesus has almost lost one of His sandals. He became human,
like us, in all things but sin.
 On Our Lady’s left and right we see the reasons for the Child’s fear. On the right is the Archangel
Gabriel, holding a cross and four nails. On the left is the Archangel Michael, holding a lance, a
pole with a sponge, and a vessel of vinegar. This vision of the instruments of the crucifixion has
driven the young Jesus to His mother’s protective embrace.
 Yet Our Lady’s gaze is fixed on us, her children on earth. She is our source of constant comfort
and hope.

The Family – 26. Community
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Good Morning!
Today I would like to focus our attention on the connection between the family and the Christian community.
This bond is natural, so to speak, because the Church is a spiritual family and the family is the domestic
Church (cf. Lumen Gentium, n. 9).
The Christian community is the home of those who believe in Jesus as the font of brotherhood among all
human beings. The Church journeys among her people, in the history of men and women, of fathers and
mothers, of sons and daughters: this is the history that matters to the Lord. The great events of worldly
powers are written in history books, and there they will remain. But the history of human feelings is written
directly in the heart of God; and that is the history that will endure for eternity. This is where life and faith
are located. The family is the place of our irreplaceable and indelible initiation into this history... into this
history of life in its fullness, which will culminate in heaven with the contemplation of God for all eternity,
but which begins in the family! And that is why the family is so important.
The Son of God learned the human story in this way, and He walked in it to the very end (cf. Heb 2:18; 5:8).
It is beautiful to contemplate Jesus and the signs of this bond! He was born into a family and there “He
learned about the world”: one shop, four homes or so, a tiny village. Yet, living for 30 years there, Jesus
absorbed the human condition, welcoming it in His communion with the Father and in His apostolic mission.
Then, when He left Nazareth and began His public ministry, Jesus formed around Him a community, an
“assembly”, that is, a con-vocation of people. This is the meaning of the word “church”.
In the Gospels, the assembly of Jesus takes the form of a family and of a hospitable family, not an exclusive,
closed sect: there we find Peter and John, but also the hungry and the thirsty, the stranger and the
persecuted, the sinner and the tax collector, the Pharisee and the multitude. And Jesus never stops
accepting and speaking to everyone, even those who no longer expect to encounter God in this life. That is
an important lesson for the Church! The disciples were chosen to care for this assembly, for this family of
God’s guests.
In order to maintain this reality of the assembly of Jesus in today’s situation, it is indispensable to renew the
covenant between the family and the Christian community. We could say that the family and the parish are
the two places where the communion of love, which finds its ultimate source in God, takes place. A Church
truly according to the Gospel cannot but take the form of a hospitable home, with its doors open, always.
Churches, parishes, institutions with closed doors must never be called churches, they should be called
museums!
And today, this covenant is crucial. “Against the ideological, financial and political ‘centres of power’, we
place our hopes in these centers of evangelizing love, rich in human warmth, based on solidarity and
participation” (Pontifical Council for the Family, The Teachings of J.M. Bergoglio-Pope Francis on the Family
and Life 1999-2014, LEV 2014, 189), and also on forgiveness among us.
Strengthening the bond between the family and the Christian community today is indispensable and urgent.
Certainly, there is need for generous faith in order to rediscover the understanding and courage to renew
this covenant. Families at times draw back, saying that they cannot live up to this: “Father, we are a poor
family and even a little worse for the wear”, “We aren’t able”, “We already have so many problems at
home”, “We don’t have the strength”. This is true. But no one is worthy, no one is able to live up to it, no
one has the strength! Without the grace of God, we can do nothing. Everything is given to us, given freely!
And the Lord never comes into a new family without working some miracle. Let us remember what He did at
the wedding of Cana! Yes, if we place ourselves in His hands, the Lord will work miracles for us — but they
are miracles of everyday life! — when the Lord is there, present in the family.
Naturally, the Christian community must also do its part. For example, overcoming attitudes that give too
much advice or are too managerial, in order to foster interpersonal dialogue and awareness and mutual
esteem. May families take the initiative and feel the responsibility for bringing their precious gifts to the
community. We must all be aware that the Christian faith is played on an open field of life shared with all.
The family and the parish must work the miracle of a more communal life for the whole of society.
At Cana, there was the Mother of Jesus, the “mother of good counsel”. Let us listen to her words: “Do
whatever He tells you” (cf. Jn 2:5). Dear families, dear parish communities, let us allow ourselves to be
inspired by this Mother, let us do whatever Jesus tells us and we will find the source of all miracles, of every
day miracles! Thank you!

Now a Word from Our Saints
(A Pentecost Sermon excerpt from Saint Francis de Sales)
“THE SEVEN GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT”
“Now, it remains to say how we may savor these gifts. I
say it in one word: we must be in health. Sick people do
not relish food because of the disease in the parts
destined to taste it. Those spiritually ill desire things
harmful to their good; they have neither fear, nor
fortitude, nor piety, nor knowledge. Who would receive
the gifts of the Holy Spirit must purge himself of his sinful
humors. Our tongue, that is to say, our soul, is coated
from sickness. We must despise the gifts of the world to
receive those of the Holy Spirit. The spirit of the world has
its gifts: knowledge leading to honor, prestige, and riches;
courage – for a duel; fear – of poverty and loss of a
worldly paradise with its favours. We must renounce
these gifts, they are incompatible with those of the Holy
Spirit. We must yield our hearts to Him, and pray Him to bestow upon us these precious gifts,
to preserve them in our souls, even to the exclusion of all other affections; to give us the gift
of fear to affect our salvation and to banish from our hearts all other anxieties the devil may
suggest to us. Let everything be lost, rather than lose God. What can the world do? Deprive
us of two or three days of earthly existence? Ah! What does that matter, provided we do not
lose eternal life? Then, may it please the Divine Majesty to grant us the gift of fear that we
may serve Him filially; the gift of piety to revere Him as our most loving Father, the gift of
knowledge to know the good we ought to do and the evil we ought to avoid, the gift of
fortitude to overcome courageously all difficulties in the practice of virtue, the gift of counsel
to discern and to choose the true way of perfection, the gift of understanding to realize the
beauty and benefit of the mysteries of faith and of the truths of the Gospel; finally the gift of
wisdom to taste how good God is, to savour and experience the sweetnesses of His
incomprehensible benignity. Oh! How happy shall we be, if we receive these priceless gifts,
for doubtless, they will lead us to the summit of this mystical ladder where we shall be
received by our Divine Saviour Who awaits us there with open arms, to make us participants
of His glory and felicity. Amen.”
MARIAN PRAYERS WE ALL SHOULD KNOW
HAIL HOLY QUEEN
Hail Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, hail our life, our sweetness, and our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve, to thee do we send up our
sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn, then, most gracious
advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us; and after this our exile, show unto us
the Blessed Fruit of thy womb Jesus; O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.
That we may be made worthy
of the promises of Christ.
HAIL MARY
Hail Mary,
Full of Grace,
the Lord is with thee
Blessed art thou
amongst women,
and blessed is the fruit
of thy womb Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour
of our death.
Amen

OFFERING
O Jesus, through the
Immaculate Heart of Mary,
I offer You my prayers,
works, joys, and sufferings
of this day for all
the intentions
of Your Sacred Heart,
in union with the
Holy Sacrifice of the Mass
throughout the world, in
reparation for my sins,
for the intentions of all my

and in particular for the
intentions of the
Holy Father.
Amen.
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection,
implored thy help or sought thy intercession was left unaided.
Inspired with this confidence, we fly unto thee, O Virgin
of Virgins our Mother; to thee do we come, before thee do we kneel,
sinful and sorrowful; O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not our petitions, but in thy clemency,
hear and answer them.
Amen.

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
“Holy Father, I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word,
so that they may all be one” (See John 17:20-26). When we think of religious unity, this prayer
seems to be unanswered. However, if we go on reading we see that Jesus is speaking about being
in Him as He is in the Father. Since this is the promise for all those who truly believe in Him, we can
see that the prayer has not been left unanswered, for all true Christians are in union with Him.
Therefore, inasmuch as we are united to our Head, Christ, we are all one, members of His body. We
should therefore do our utmost to maintain our union with Christ and do not allow anything to
break it. When sin and obstacles interfere we have the tools of prayer and confession at our
disposal. Let’s use them. We are among those who believed in Jesus through the words of His
disciples. Let’s us then take courage, Jesus is praying for us to his Holy Father. There is someone
else that intercedes with Her Son in our behalf: Mary, the Most Holy Mother of God: “Hail Mary, Mother of God …
pray for us sinners, now and in the hour of our death. Amen.”

SCHOOL’S IN: DRIVE CAREFULLY (both on and off the road)
NEWS FROM THE DE LA SALLE SCHOOL
“Sabbatical” was the Word of the Week Brother Thomas shared with the students at last
Wednesday’s Morning Assembly. He announced that he chose this word because it means a break or
change from a normal routine and that is exactly what he will be enjoying as of 1 July. For several
years The De La Salle School’s Board of Trustees has been guided by a strategic plan that included
preparing for a smooth transition from the first Executive Director of The De La Salle School to the
second one.
Brother Thomas assured the students and staff that he is in good health and continues to be
enthused about the mission of The De La Salle School however he decided that now is the time to
move on. Brother Dennis Malloy, FSC, the man who oversees the work of the Brothers in Eastern
North America has accepted Brother Thomas’s resignation. The Board of Trustees nominated Mr. William Gault, the
school’s current Associate Executive Director, to be Brother Thomas’s successor and Brother Dennis has approved his
nomination. Congratulations Mr. Gault!
Mr. Gault understands and believes in the Lasallian approach to education. He will continue to ensure that The De La Salle
School is a place of hope and opportunity for young men and their families. Brother Thomas assured him of his help as he
assumes his new duties at the start of July.
Brother Thomas commented that he was looking forward to a new adventure in ministry after his sabbatical. Until that
occurs he will continue to be a member of the Brothers’ community in Freeport.

Last Ounce of Courage is the story of a grieving father
inspired by his grandson to take a stand for faith and freedom
against a tide of apathy and vanishing liberty. Alongside fellow
citizens of courage, faith, and integrity, he is a champion for
the cherished principles we the people hold dear. A tale of
family bonds and free expression, the film seeks to encourage
all Americans to take a stand and raise their voices in support
of their beliefs.
Last Ounce of Courage and Veritas are proud to partner with
StandUSA, an online community for American values, in
standing up for the ideals of faith, family, and freedom in a
pivotal time for our country. StandUSA, along with its partners
and affiliates, encourages all Americans to take the
inspirational message of the film to heart and let it spur them
to raise their voices in support of freedom.
With May being the month when we honor those who paid the
ultimate price for freedoms cause, “Last Ounce of Courage”
makes a statement that will leave an imprint on your hearts.
Come; be with us as we stand for faith, family and freedom
and join us on Saturday, 21 May 2016 at 2:30 P.M. as we
gather to pray for and remember all those who made the
ultimate sacrifice for our freedom!
Sacred Music and the New Evangelization

6:30 P.M. Dinner (Hosted by Discovering Christ)
7:30 P.M. Presentation by Dr. Jennifer Donelson
Director of Sacred Music, Saint Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers
Lower Church
**Free will offering**
Please RSVP to the Rectory at (516) 378-0665 if you plan to attend the dinner
"Late have I loved thee, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new!” These words of Saint
Augustine capture the longing of every heart for God, whether one is a practicing
Catholic or living a life far from God. As a reflection of the beauty of Christ,
sacred music draws minds and hearts to God and can serve as a tool to open even the
hardest hearts to the graces that God desires to give them. Sacred music, which the
Second Vatican Council calls a “treasure of inestimable value,” is effective in preaching
the Gospel in an authentic and attractive way, and it aids those who hear it in being
more readily able to perceive the presence of Christ at the holy sacrifice of the Mass.
Dr. Jennifer Donelson, Director of Sacred Music at Saint Joseph’s Seminary
(Dunwoodie) in Yonkers, will address how Catholics can learn to pray through sacred music, and how truly
beautiful sacred music is an essential means for drawing fallen-away Catholics back to the Church, as well
as sharing the faith with those who are not yet members of the Church.
Building up the Church through Sacred Music
Saturday, 11 June 2016
12:00 P.M. Sacred Music Workshop
5:00 P.M. Holy Mass in Chant
Please join Dr. Jennifer Donelson for an afternoon learning the melodies that
are the basis for all Western music. We’ll cover the basics of reading
Gregorian chant notation, as well as beautifully shaping musical lines.
Practical sessions in singing will be supplemented by short talks on how
Gregorian chant has served as a means for building up the life of the Church in
times past, and how chant can revitalize the life of the Church in the present
day. The afternoon will culminate in a sung Mass for the Commemoration of
the 105th Anniversary of the Dedication of the Church of Our Holy Redeemer in
Freeport, New York.
Please RSVP to Father Alessandro da Luz at (516) 378-0665 if you will be
participating in the workshop and plan to sing at the 5:00 P.M. Mass.
PREPARING FOR

(Vea Hechos I:24-25).
Alexandra Korine Caggiano, Bryanna
María Collado, Melissa Joy Eakin, Jeanett Martinez, Elisa María Peralta, Cathy Elizabeth Quezada Arias, y

KNOWING
THE
FATHER
Lifting up His eyes to Heaven,
Jesus prayed, saying: “Holy
Father, I pray not only for
them, but also for those who
will believe in Me through
their word, so that they may
all be one, as You, Father are
in Me and I in You, that they
also may be in us, that the
world may believe that You
sent Me. … Righteous Father,
the world does not know You,
but I know You, and they know
that You sent Me. I made
known to them Your name and
I will make it known, that the
love with which You loved Me
may be in them and I in them.
