Ever since the Word became flesh and dwelt amongst us, that Life of service has glorified God and advanced His Kingdom through, with, and in the lives of those who walk in the footsteps of service. A life of service may be the road less traveled, but it is never-the-less the way of life on earth that leads to Eternal Life in Heaven. It is the way of life discovered and followed by members of the armed forces who here and abroad defend our inalienable rights to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. It is the way of life discovered and followed by police officers who seek to preserve law and order in society. It is the way of life discovered and followed by firefighters who rush in to seek out and save what was lost. It is the way of life discovered and followed by married men and women who through the natural course of things become mothers and fathers and establish families where God can be known, loved, and served! When a life of service is discovered and followed, it very often inspires others to want to share that life. And as true as that is regarding the inspiring lives of service we see in our civil servants, it is true as well of those who discover and follow Christ as Ecclesial servants. It is true of the men who discover Christ and follow Him in the Priesthood. It is true of the men and women who discover Christ and follow Him in Religious Life. And, it is true of the men who discover Christ and follow Him as Permanent Deacons. The Life of service discovered, followed, and shared by Deacons is looking for a few good men from Our Holy Redeemer in Freeport to discover It, follow It, and share It. If you are a man whose faith brings you to Mass every Sunday and whose faith in Christ is the basis for what you do outside of Mass throughout the week, then please come and see if perhaps you are one of those good men by attending one of three information sessions at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington. Your attendance at one of these sessions will not be received as a decision on your part to enter into the Deaconate, nor will it be an expression of the Church’s selection of you for this Ministry. Rather, such attendance will indicate what I have come to observe as your Pastor: that the Parish of Our Holy Redeemer in Freeport has more than just a few good men; Our Holy Redeemer has you! In the Service of God and His Church, Rev. Father Douglas R. Arcoleo Pastor THE PASTOR’S OATH OF FIDELITY 25 OCTOBER 2015 Seven years ago, on 19 October 2008, I was officially installed as the tenth Pastor of Our Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church in Freeport, New York. On that day, I publicly professed, in the presence of Bishopdelegate and Pastor of Saint Martha’s in Uniondale, Monsignor Francis Caldwell, an Oath of Fidelity that I gratefully renew today. “I, Father Arcoleo, on assuming the Office of Pastor, of Our Holy Redeemer Parish, Freeport/New York, promise that I shall always preserve communion with the Catholic Church both in the words I speak and in the way I act. With great care and fidelity I shall carry out the responsibilities by which I am bound in relation both to the universal Church and to the particular Church in which I am called to exercise my service according to the requirements of the law. In carrying out my charge, which is committed to me by the Church, I shall preserve the Deposit of Faith in its entirety, hand it on faithfully and make it shine forth. As a result, whatsoever teachings are contrary to it, I shall shun. I shall follow and foster the common discipline of the whole Church and shall look after the observance of all ecclesiastical laws, especially those which are contained in the Code of Canon Law. With Christian obedience I shall associate myself with what is expressed by the Bishops as authentic doctors and teachers of the faith or established by them as the Church's rulers. And I shall faithfully assist diocesan bishops so that all apostolic activity, to be exercised by the mandate and in the name of the Church, is carried out in the communion of the same Church. May God help me in this way and the holy Gospels of God which I touch with my hands.” Please pray that by God’s grace and the help of the Church, I may be faithful to this Oath of Fidelity for as long as I remain the Pastor of Our Holy Redeemer. NOW A WORD FROM OUR POPE (ABOUT THE FAMILY) POPE FRANCIS GENERAL AUDIENCE Saint Peter’s Square Wednesday, 24 June 2015 The Family - 20. Wounds (I) Dear Brothers and Sisters, Good Morning! In recent catecheses we have spoken about the family suffering through the frailties of the human condition, poverty, sickness and death. Today, however, we will reflect on the hurts that are incurred in family life. When, that is, we hurt one another within the family. The worst thing! We know that in every family history there are moments in which the intimacy of loved ones is offended by the behaviour of its members. Words and actions (and omissions!) that, rather than expressing love, dismiss it, or even mortify it. When these hurts, which are still rectifiable, are ignored, they deepen: they transform into impertinence, hostility and contempt. And at that point they can become deep wounds that divide husband and wife, and induce them to find understanding, support, consolation elsewhere. But often these “supports” do not consider the good of the family! The depletion of conjugal love spreads resentment in relationships. And often this disintegration “collapses” onto the children. There: the children. I would like to meditate a little on this point. Despite our seemingly evolved sensitivity, and all our refined psychological analyses, I ask myself if we are not just anaesthetizing ourselves to the wounds in children’s souls. The more you try to compensate with gifts and snacks, the more you lose your sense of these spiritual wounds — so painful and so deep. We talk a lot about behavioural problems, mental health, the well-being of the child, about the anxiety of parents and their children.... But do we even know what a spiritual wound is? Do we feel the weight of the mountain that crushes the soul of a child in those families where members mistreat and hurt one another to the point of breaking the bonds of marital fidelity. How much weight, do our choices have — mistaken choices, for example — how much weight do they place on the soul of our children? When adults lose their head, when each one thinks only of him- or herself, when a dad and mom hurt one another, the souls of their children suffer terribly, they experience a sense of despair. And these wounds leave a mark that lasts their whole lives. In the family, everything is connected: when her soul is wounded in some way, the infection spreads to everyone. And when a man and a woman, who have committed to being “one flesh” and forming a family, think obsessively of their own need for freedom and gratification, this bias affects the hearts and lives of their children in a profound way. Frequently these children hide to cry alone.... We need to understand this fully. Husband and wife are one flesh. Their own little children are flesh of their flesh. If we think of the harshness with which Jesus admonishes adults not to scandalize the little ones — we heard the Gospel passage (cf. Mt 18:6) — we can also better understand his words on the serious responsibility to guard the marital bond that gives rise to the human family (cf. Mt 19:6-9). When man and woman have become one flesh, all the father and mother’s wounds and neglect have an impact on the living flesh of their children. It is true, on the other hand, that there are cases in which separation is inevitable. At times it becomes even morally necessary, precisely when it is a matter of removing the weaker spouse or young children from the gravest wounds caused by abuse and violence, by humiliation and exploitation, by disregard and indifference. There are, thanks be to God, those who, sustained by faith and by love for their children, bear witness to their fidelity to a bond they believed in, although it may seem impossible to revive it. Not all those who are separated feel called to this vocation. Not all discern, in their solitude, the Lord calling them. Around us we find various families in so-called irregular situations — I don’t really like this word — and it causes us to wonder. How do we help them? How do we accompany them? How do we accompany them so that the children aren’t taken hostage by either dad or mom? Let us ask the Lord for great faith, in order to see reality through the eyes of God; and for great charity in order to approach people with His merciful heart. FAITH AND EDUCATION SCHOOL’S IN: DRIVE CAREFULLY (both on and off the road) NEWS FROM THE DE LA SALLE SCHOOL (516) 379-8660 Brother Dennis Lee, FSC, who serves as a missionary in Kenya, stopped by to visit with our students. He showed pictures of the people, places, and animals he encountered during his time in East Africa. He discussed his experience of living in community with young African Brothers. He provided a history lesson chronicling European colonization of the continent. He also told stories of people who live in slums and who benefit from the healing hand of our Church. He recounted the experience of students for whom education is so precious that they surmount many challenges to attend school and who pursue their studies with diligence. He spoke specifically of Christ the Teacher Institute for Education in Nairobi where he serves college age students interested in becoming teachers. This institute is affiliated with Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, a Lasallian school here in the United States. In addition he spoke of the young people who attend Mwangaza College in Nakuru, Kenya, the Lasallian school with which The De La Salle School is twinned. Our students gained a greater appreciation of the impact of their Lenten contribution in support of that school. Brother Dennis’ visit was timely as the universal church was preparing to observe World Mission Sunday and as we reflected on Pope Francis’ reminder that by our Baptism each of us is called to engage in missionary activity both in distant lands and in our local community. 25 October 2015 – The Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time B Sunday Readings: Jeremiah XXXI: 7-9; Hebrews V: 1-6; Saint Mark X: 46-52 Student’s Name: ____________________________________________________ Class Day/Session: __________________________________________________ Catechist Name: ____________________________________________________ Mass Time (Circle One): Sat: 5:00 PM 7:00 PM Sun: 7:00 AM 8:00 AM 9:30 AM 11:30 AM 1:00 PM GOSPEL QUESTIONS: (Religious Education Students please answer ALL questions) Fill in the blanks: What did Bartimaeus want from Jesus? “Bartimeus wanted Jesus to __________________________________________.” What did Jesus say to Bartimaeus? “Jesus said to Bartimeus: ‘________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________.’” What happened to Bartimaeus? “Bartimeus______________________________________________________________.” Announcement for Confirmandi: Next week, 1 November is the 9/13 Gospel Reflection DUE for Confirmation & the 5th meeting with Pastor! Scripture Reflection “Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me.” (See Mark 10:46-52) This prayer, said by blind Bartimaeus, is the famous “Jesus Prayer,”—one of the most famous of all prayers. Many of us have said that prayer and when it is said in sincerity there is no doubt that Jesus always answers. But Bartimaeus story does not stop with the prayer. Jesus heals Bartimaeus and then Bartimaeus follows Jesus. Some may see the answer of the prayer as the end of the story, but in reality it is only the beginning! With every gift of Jesus we receive a new responsibility. It is only when we carry out that responsibility that we find the true meaning of the gift. In fact, in doing so, we also find the true meaning of life. Bartimaeus followed Jesus. He found real joy, not just because he received his sight, but also because from then on he helped others to recover their sight. Do we imitate his example? Ahí tienes a tu madre” (Jn 19, 26-27); “Tengo sed” (Jn 19, 28); “¡Dios mío, Dios mío! ¿Por qué me has abandonado?” MASTER, I WANT TO SEE! As Jesus was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a sizable crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind man, sat by the roadside begging. On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me.” … Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take courage; get up, Jesus is calling you.” He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus. Jesus said to him in reply, “What do you want Me to do for you?” The blind man replied, “Master, I want to see.” Jesus told him, “Go your way; your faith has saved you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way.
