THE LIVES OF SAINTS HOLY INNOCENTS The first testimony we have concerning this feast comes from St. Peter Chrysologus in the fifth century, from the Calendar of Carthage and the Jerome Martyrology. The feast was celebrated as a solemnity after 1568. In Constantinople the feast was celebrated on December 29. The biblical basis for this feast is found in Matthew2:1318 (the Gospel of the Mass): “Once Herod realized they he had been deceived by the astrologers, he became furious. He ordered the massacre of all the boys two years and under in Bethlehem and its environs, making his calculations on the basis of the date he had learned from the astrologers. What was said through Jeremiah the prophet was then fulfilled: “A cry was heard at Ramah, sobbing and loud lamentation: Rachel bewailing her children; no comfort for her, since they are no more’.” It is estimated that if the population of the Bethlehem area at that time was approximately 1000, perhaps 20 infant boys were slain. -Saints of the Roman Calendar TheHolyFamilyofJesus,Mary&Joseph December27,2015 During this Jubilee Year of Mercy spend some time with our Lord at Eucharistic Adoration Mondays through Fridays 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. Thursdays 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. Saturdays 9:30 a.m. - 12 noon First Fridays of the Month 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. followed by Holy Mass TheHolyFamilyofJesus,Mary&Joseph December27,2015 Thank you from Monsignor Becker, Father Gonzalez and Father PergjiniAs we still continue to celebrate the Christmas season with joy and hope, and welcome a new year filled with God’s grace and many blessings , we thought to write few thank you words to you dear faithful people of St. Lucy. SOLEMNITY OF MARY, MOTHER OF GOD The solemnity of the Mother of God, which now coincides with the octave-day of Christmas and the beginning of the new year, was probably assigned this day because of the in luence of the Byzantine Church, which celebrates the synapsis of the most holy Theotokos on December 26. Thus is in accordance with the Western practice of honoring secondary persons on he day after the feast of the principal personage (in this case, the birth of Christ). The Coptic church celebrates this feast on January 16, but in the West, as early as the ifth century, the feast was celebrated on the Sunday before Christmas, although in France it was celebrated on January 18 and in Spain on December 18. Even before Pope Sergius introduced four Marian feasts in the seventh century (the Birth of Mary, the Annunciation, the Puri ication and the Assumption), the octave day of Christmas was celebrated in Rome on honor of the Maternity of Mary. Later, in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, the feast of the Circumcision was added, although it had been introduced into Spain and France at the end of the sixth century and was later included in the Missal of Pope St. Pius V. The recent liturgical reform has restored the original Roman practice, which replaced the pagan feast of the New Year, dedicated to the god Janus. With this feast honoring the Mother of God. This celebration, assigned to January 1 in conformity with the ancient liturgy of the city of Rome, is meant to commemorate the part played by Mary in this mystery of salvation. It is meant also to exalt the singular dignity which this mystery brings to the “holy Mother. . . through whom we were found worthy. . . to receive the Author of life.”- In the encyclical MarialisCultus(1974) Pope Paul VI. -Saints of the Roman Calendar
