of Ordinary Time

PRAYER OF
ST. AUGUSTINE
Watch, dear Lord,
with those who wake
or watch or weep tonight,
and give your angels charge
over those who sleep.
Tend your sick ones,
O Lord Jesus Christ,
rest your weary ones,
bless your dying ones,
soothe your suffering ones,
shield your joyous ones,
and all for your love’s sake.

WHAT’S IN YOUR HEART?
Those among Jesus’ disciples who raised the question “this saying is hard; who can
accept it?” reflect just how “shocking” was Jesus’ teaching that eating his flesh and
drinking his blood would bring eternal life. Not everyone who didn’t believe took
Judas’ path of murderous betrayal; most only fell away and “returned to their former
way of life and no longer accompanied him.” Does your faith in Jesus and participation
in the Eucharist make a difference in your everyday “way of life”? How do you
“accompany” Jesus each day?
WHERE WE LIVE, SERVE,
& WALK TOGETHER IN FAITH.
ST. JOSEPH’S
PAGE TWO
FROM THE PASTOR
My Dear Parish Family,
Last weekend I had the great privilege of traveling to
Maryland to celebrate the 25th Wedding anniversary of a
couple whose wedding was one of the first I witnessed as a
young priest. Their nuptials took place in St. Gertrude’s,
Island Heights and we have kept in contact throughout the
years. It was a wonderful celebration of faith and family as we
rejoiced in their Sacrament and witness to Christ’s presence in
their lives.
On the drive back, I got thinking about Jesus and how he is
present to us. We have been talking about the Eucharist and
Jesus, the Bread of Life especially over the past few weeks. I
offer some thoughts to you about how Jesus is present in the
Mass.



When we gather for Mass, Christ is made present again,
not only in the bread and wine, but in other ways as well.
Jesus is made present in the assembly of the people. The
Body of Christ is made up of its members, those who live
through, with, and in Christ.
Christ is made present in the Word of God proclaimed and
received by the assembly, for Jesus is the Word made
flesh, the total and complete revelation of God contained
in the entire Bible, the Word of God, not only written on a
page or spoken by a reader but embodied and lived by Jesus.
Jesus is also made present in the person of the priest who
presides at the altar, the table of the Lord’s sacrifice. The
eternal reality of the Lord’s Supper breaks into time, our
present time and day, at the Holy Mass. As Jesus reclined
at table with his disciples, so the priest stands at the table
of the Lord’s Supper with the faithful. Jesus is the Bread
of Life. He is present in the Eucharist; his Body and
Blood are manifested under the appearance of bread and
wine. He is Emmanuel, “God with us.”
I encourage you to think about how we each can see Jesus in our
day to day lives. Give it a try and you may just be surprised!
God bless you,
Fr. Scott

like to join the Catholic Church. Is
there an adult or teenager you
know who is baptized but would

JUST DO IT!
[Psalm 95] Come, let us sing for
joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud
to the Rock of our salvation.
Is God calling you in some special
way? Do you love to lift up your
hearts in song and worship him during mass? Have you felt the lead of
the Holy Spirit beckoning you to come forward and say “I want
to help lead the singing too?”
Come join the adult choir as we worship and enhance the liturgy! The choir is made up of volunteers who are dedicated,
committed to serving, and are fun-loving. All levels of singing
are welcome from beginner to advanced. Practices are held
Thursday nights from 7:30-9:00pm in the church. The choir
sings on Sundays from mid-September-June and will be rotating
masses this season. They also sing on Christmas Eve, Holy
Week, and other special events held throughout the year.
Our first rehearsal will take place on Thursday, September
3rd in the church from 7:30pm to 9:00pm. Be excited
where the Lord places you to serve him. He is getting ready
to bless you and bring much fruit into your lives when you
answer his call in whatever ministry he calls you to. If you
love to sing and praise him then this is your time to come
forward. Contact Gina in the office at 732-349-0018 ext.
2306 or at [email protected].
A NOT E FR OM OU R B IS H OP:
To the Clergy, Religious and Faithful of the Diocese,
I write, once again, to express gratitude to you. The outpouring of prayers, love
and support at the passing of my Mother was overwhelming. I received over a
thousand Mass cards, sympathy cards, emails, letters and promises of prayers. Many of you actually attended the funeral Mass. My brother Dan
(Diocesan Department of Catholic Education) and I are so grateful to you all
as is our entire family. We could not possibly respond personally to each and
every act of kindness but please know that we deeply appreciated them at a very
difficult time. God bless you all!

ST. JOSEPH’S
PAGINA OCHO
MENSAJE DEL PASTOR
Estimada Familia Parroquial,
Yo he estado reflexionando sobre

* Prohibidos chicles, comidas y bebidas.
* Vestir decorosamente. Evitar escotes, vestidos provocativos, shorts y camisetas.
Deben llegar a
