We look forward to having you join in the celebration. Happy foundation anniversary! We are celebrating 130 years of Catholic faith, family and service. 130 years is a long but rich history shared with the City of Albany. Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish and St. Mary’s School made an impact to the whole community and helped shape and influence a lot of things here in this simple yet busy and growing town. There are three things we believe we have prided about and will continue to be proud of in the coming years. We are proud of our Catholic faith, our families and the service we provide to our Catholic and non-Catholic brethren. The Education and the promotion of Catholic values the St. Mary’s School have provided will never fade even if we have closed the school couple of years ago. One of the things we continue to do is to consistently provide our children of school age and the youth their respective formation. We also support those who go to Catholic schools in the neighboring towns by subsidizing their education. Through that our mission to educate and form our children and the youth continue to be realized. Our worship and the celebration of sacraments continue to shape our faith community. In the past decades, our parish has become diverse. There is a growing Hispanic presence in the mid-valley for some decades now. Our parish is one community they come to be members as well as neighboring parishes in Lebanon and Corvallis. Over time, the parish has made strides to best serve the needs of both the Anglo and Hispanic parishioners, without neglecting the need of non-Anglo and non-Hispanic parishioners. Due to our responsiveness, our parish has been wonderfully providing the Albany community well-formed individuals and families. Our apostolate to the community of Albany and to those who come through Albany has been formed over the years. The soup kitchen is a charitable work-apostolate that was established by the dynamic pastor Fr. Pat Walsh (of happy memory). Today it serves hundreds of individuals three (3) days a week. Fr. Betts, through his blessing, gave a ‘go’ to a very comforting apostolate to the sick, the lonely and the challenged. Several women have started during his time the prayer shawl ministry. Today the ministry has provided countless comfort, refuge, strength and healing to parishioners and non-parishioners alike. Fr. Andrew T. started the sister parish ministry. By sending monetary help to Honduras, the Our Lady of Perpetual Help (Maria Seguidora), Honduras is sustained. Run by the Salesians, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Honduras has built its church and the children and youth are provided the chance to be formed. These blessings we enjoy are God’s providence. God will continue to help us, through the intercession of our patron saint, the Our Lady of Perpetual Help. As we celebrate the blessings God has provided us, may we continue to celebrate today and make tomorrow bright and good. We welcome one and all who will join us in our special day. We especially welcome his Excellency Archbishop Alexander Sample, DD, Archbishop of Portland in Oregon. Archbishop Alexander Sample is our main celebrant and homilist. o0o September 8 is the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The BVM is conceived without sin. Having no sin, she becomes a worthy tabernacle of the Son of God, Jesus Christ. September 8 is a special day for our parish, having Mary as our titular patroness. May we remember to say a prayer for our parish and for our parishioners on that day. Let us also not forget to say a prayer for those who are seeking understanding in their faith. o0o September 11, the day of mourning for the 9/11 attack, has become a special day for all Americans. This is a special day to remember that we are all called to live our baptismal calling, that is, to do charity. We are also called to pray and thank God for the wonderful blessing He gave us during those difficult times. Please do remember a victim and a first responder. Saturday, October 3rd, 2015 St. Mary’s Parish, Albany, invites you to enjoy its annual International Saturday 11:00 – 3pm St. Mary’s Church, Gathering Space 822 Ellsworth St. SW Albany, Oregon 97321 www.stmarysalbany.com All funds raised during this event support the many youth education programs of St. Mary’s Parish. Tickets available at the door September 13, 2015 13 de septiembre de 2015 Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Vigésimo Cuarto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario SERVANT Sometimes the hour and the person meet. Sometimes, when a task or mission is set upon our shoulders, we know we must meet our responsibilities and we are ready. These are heady and invigorating times. The first reading and the Gospel proclamation today are intimate glimpses of a commencement, an inauguration of a challenging future. In both readings, a sense of gravity prevails. The first reading is from the mysterious Servant Songs from the book of Isaiah. The person is steadfast and brave. His courage and bravery are not located in his stout heart, but in God. We are reminded, “The Lord God opens my ear that I may hear” (Isaiah 50:4), so the servant understands the mission. And twice, “The Lord God is my help” (50:7, 9), so that the servant can endure the coming struggle. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The Lord God is my help; who will prove me wrong? (Isaiah 50:5-9a). Psalm — I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living (Psalm 116). Second Reading — Faith, if it does not have works, is dead (James 2:14-18). Gospel — Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” (Mark 8:27-35). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from the Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Nm 21:4b-9; Ps 78:1bc-2, 34-38; Phil 2:6-11; Jn 3:13-17 Tuesday: 1 Tm 3:1-13; Ps 101:1b-3ab, 5-6; Jn 19:25-27 or Lk 2:33-35 Wednesday: 1 Tm 3:14-16; Ps 111:1-6; Lk 7:31-35 Thursday: 1 Tm 4:12-16; Ps 111:7-10; Lk 7:36-50 Friday: 1 Tm 6:2c-12; Ps 49:6-10, 17-20; Lk 8:1-3 Saturday: 1 Tm 6:13-16; Ps 100:1b-5; Lk 8:4-15 Sunday: Wis 2:12, 17-20; Ps 54:3-8; Jas 3:16 — 4:3; Mk 9:30-37 EL SIERVO A veces la persona y la hora se encuentran. —San Agustín Prayer Corner Please keep all those who are in the military, or are ill or suffering in your prayers.
