sixteenth Sunday in ordinary time
Note of Thanks
Dear Monsignor McNamee,
At Atlanta Habitat, 2014 was a year filled with stories
that might be told with numbers. Forty-four families
completed their requirements and purchased their
homes. Fourteen families paid off their mortgages.
Habitat Build 2014
Seventy-three new families were approved for
homeownership. We offered 13,000 education classes, partnered with 188
unique sponsor groups, and engaged almost 13,000 volunteers.

We’re immensely proud of these numbers but they lead to deeper stories.
They reflect the achievements of construction staff, skilled supervisors, and
volunteers building with qualified families.
You are to thank for our numbers and stories. You donate time and money,
show up on build sites rain or shine, and help spread the word about our
successful homeownership program. It is our honor to work with many great
people. You are one of them. Your contributions are invaluable.

Sincerely,

Pope Francis made his intention to travel to the United

Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama will welcome
Pope Francis to the White House September 23. During the
visit, the president and the pope will continue the dialogue,
which they began during the president’s visit to the Vatican
in March 2014, on their shared values and commitments on
a wide range of issues," said a statement released by the Office of the Press
Secretary at the White House.
Those issues, it said, include "caring for the marginalized and the poor; advancing
economic opportunity for all; serving as good stewards of the environment;
protecting religious minorities and promoting religious freedom around the
world; and welcoming and integraƟng immigrants and refugees into our

Extraordinary Ministers Training Dates
Would you like to serve others while serving God? Then consider becoming an
Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion (EMHC)! Our EMHC Ministry is a
dynamic and vibrant ministry that allows parishioners to assist the Clergy in
distribution of the Eucharist. EMHCs share responsibility for distributing the
Eucharist at Masses on Saturdays/Sundays or weekdays. We are in special need of
at least two new EMHCs at each Mass, particularly for the 5:45 pm and 7:15 pm
Masses on Sundays, as well as homebound ministers to the sick. EMHCs are
scheduled at their Mass of preference. For example, if you normally attend the
9:00 am Sunday Mass, you will be scheduled at that Mass.
Training to become a NEW Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion will be
held Wednesday, August 19 and Monday, August 24 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm
starting in Kenny Hall and practicing in the Cathedral. You only need to attend
one training session. The Diocese of Atlanta mandates refresher training for ALL
CURRENT EMHCs every three years. This training will be held Wednesday,
August 19 and Monday, August 24 from 6:30 – 7:30 pm in Kenny Hall.
Explanation of Annulments
If you would like to know more about the Annulment process, there will be an
informational meeting on Tuesday, July 28, from 7-9 pm in Kenny Hall. Deacon
Whitney Robichaux will provide general information to help you understand why
the Church has this process and the procedures used in the Archdiocese of
Atlanta. In addition, he will be available for questions after the session.
Registration is not necessary.

Stewardship of Treasure

How shall I repay the Lord for his goodness to me?” Psalm 116
In today’s Gospel passage from St. Mark, Jesus invites His weary Apostles, returning from His
commission, to a quiet place for some much needed rest. To their surprise, the crowd beats
them to that secluded location. The prophet Jeremiah indeed foretold of Jesus, as the Good
Shepherd, and St. Paul reminds us how, through Christ, we are brought together in Him. In
the Gospel, we see how Jesus takes pity on the crowd and begins to teach them. So it is with
teaching Christian stewardship to our parish communion. Once the congregation is
introduced to the meaning of stewardship as a way of life, the education process never ends.
Following the example of Christ the teacher, parish leadership must tirelessly profess
stewardship of time, talent, and treasure at every opportunity. Stewardship education
becomes a year round effort.

Pastoral Care Ministry
Linda Dyson • 404-233-2145 x440 • [email protected]
Are you Interested in Becoming a Stephen Minister?
Classes Start Soon! Deadline to apply is Thursday, August 6. If you've been
looking for a way to make a real difference in this hurting world, there's no better
way than to join the Stephen Ministry here at the Cathedral! Each person who
answers God's call to serve as a Stephen Minister is able, as a conduit of Christ's
love, to have a positive impact on another person's life at a time when he/she
needs someone to care. This ministry is named after the first lay person, Saint
Stephen, who was chosen by the Apostles to care for the needs of the early
Christians (Acts 6:1-6).
What is Stephen Ministry? For over 25 years, Christ the King’s Stephen Ministry
has offered one-to-one pastoral care for individuals experiencing a wide range of
life’s stressors – loneliness, loss of a loved one, hospitalization, separation or
divorce, spiritual crises, unemployment or job crises, a chronic illness, a terminal
illness, aging, relocation, recovery from an illness, miscarriage and/or infertility -at no cost to the receiver. Stephen Ministry trains and organizes lay persons to
provide one-to-one Christian care in and around our parish.
What is my commitment? A Stephen Minister receives 50 hours of training on
how to provide distinctively Christian care, commits to meet once a week with a
hurting person for up to one year, and is a caring advocate who listens, prays, and
leaves the cure and results to the Lord. A Stephen Minister also commits to
attending regular supervision meetings on the first and third Wednesday evenings
of each month to ensure the best possible care for his/her care receiver.
2015 Training Dates (Thursday Evenings, 6:30-9 PM): August 20 through March

When ‘Cheer up’ Doesn't Work
You’ve heard it time and time again: “Cheer up … Get over it . . . It’s not that

Here’s the good news: You don’t have to go through your struggle alone. Help is
available. Our Stephen Ministers are trained caregivers who will walk with you,

calificadas.

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

WELCOME FROM THE PASTOR AND
CATHEDRAL STAFF
Dear Friends in Christ,
On behalf of Archbishop Wilton Gregory, the Clergy and
staff, I welcome you to the Cathedral of Christ the King. I
hope and pray that you feel welcomed by our parish
community and that your spiritual and pastoral needs will
be met.
We are a very active parish with 5,500 families and over one
hundred ministries. We encourage our members to share
their gifts of time, talent and treasure.
Our mission statement is to “Know, Love and Serve as Jesus
Did”. This is the mission of each disciple of Christ and, if
you are new, I hope and pray that you will join us and be
part of the community of Christ the King. If you are passing
through or visiting the city of Atlanta, I hope you enjoy your
worship experience and please visit us again.
If you would like to know more about our parish, you can
visit our website at www.cathedralofchristtheking.org or
email us.
May we, this day and all the days of our lives, know, love
and serve as Jesus did.
Prayers and Blessings,
Msgr. Frank McNamee, Rector
