SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 26, 2015 Reflection The Missionaries of Charity founded by Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta is all over the world now serving the needs of those they “meet in the street” on a daily basis. In all their chapels throughout the world, two words are inscribed next to the crucifix of Our Lord: “I Thirst”. These two words exclaimed by Christ while in agony on the cross just prior to expiring perfectly describe the quest of human beings created in God’s image and likeness to satisfy their bodily and spiritual needs. The people of the Old Covenant were “thirsting” for satisfaction of their bodily needs which was akin to their hunger for food. One of the great stories in Scripture tells how God showered a bread-like substance called manna on the Jews as they journeyed to the Promised Land. In today’s first reading, Elisha miraculously multiplied twenty loaves of barley bread to feed his followers of about a hundred in number. Elisha had reminded the man from Baashalishah who brought the barleys of what the Lord said, “They shall eat and have some left.” The feeding of the five thousand people which we read today in the Gospel had some precedent in the Old Testament accounts on how God cared for the bodily needs of his people. The psalmist reiterated the idea that God will feed us, that God satisfies all the needs of the people who love him. Christ the Son of God came to give us not just the material food that will satisfy our body but the spiritual food that will nourish our soul and prepare it for eternal life. He calls that food the Bread of Life, the Eucharist. In the next four Sundays, St John’s Gospel will dwell on the long discourse on the images of bread and how it is incorporated into Christ’s teachings on the Eucharist. Thus, the feeding of the five thousand people in today’s Gospel is the foretaste of the institution of the Eucharist. The miracle of the multiplication of loaves in today’s Gospel which is recorded by all the four evangelists was meant to be the continuation of last Sunday’s Gospel of St Mark. At first sight therefore it would seem strange that John’s description of this miracle is given today instead of Mark’s. The reason for this being that the feeding of five thousand in John’s Gospel was but the introduction to Our Lord’s long discourse Eucharistic Adoration Chapel Mass Times Monday, Wednesday & Friday 8:00 am Tuesday & Thursday 12:10 pm Saturday 8:00 am & 5:00 pm Sunday 8:00 am,10:00 am & 5:00 pm Sunday (Spanish) 12 Noon Monday - Thursday 9:00 am - 6:30 pm Parish Center Office Hours Monday - Thursday Friday, Saturday, Sunday 8:30 am - 6:30 pm By appointment only Confessions Latin Mass Second & Fifth Sunday of the month on the Eucharist. The miracle of the multiplication of loaves was based on compassion. We have to recall that last Sunday, Mark’s Gospel recorded that Jesus was very compassionate on the crowd that followed them to the place where he and his disciples were going to rest. He called off his rest and started preaching to them. After feeding their souls with spiritual food of the word of God, he also fed their bodies with material food. The Lord himself understood that body as well as soul needed to be kept alive. The food he gave them was to sustain them for the journey back to their destinations. This miracle should convince us that Christ is interested in our daily needs too just as he was interested in those of the people of his time. We are on a journey, a very distant journey which we do not know when, where, and how it will end. We need not only the material food but mostly the spiritual food to sustain both our body and soul. That was why Christ instituted the Eucharist with which he feeds our soul and prepares it for this long journey. Christ is our strength. Receiving him in the Eucharist means receiving strength in our journey of life. 1:30pm Saturday 8:30 am & 3:30 pm or by appointment Page Two St. Anthony Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 26, 2015 The eyes of all look hopefully to you, and you give them their food in due season. - Psalm 145:15 Welcome Mrs. Sylvia Kawjaree - New School Principal St. Anthony Church and school would like to welcome our new principal, Mrs. Sylvia Kawjaree. It is important to do background checks and fingerprinting of all those who work with children in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. These background checks and fingerprinting are used in conjunction with abuse awareness and prevention training programs. Abuse awareness and prevention training programs help ensure that we create the safest possible parish and school environments for our children. VPIN (Volunteer and Personnel Information Network) is an Archdiocesan background information tracking system. This information system tracks employees and volunteers regarding their assignment histories, compliance for fingerprinting, background checks, and mandatory VIRTUS sexual abuse prevention training. VPIN allows parishes and schools to adapt features of the system to fit their local needs and it assists the archdiocese to complete its audit reports.
