Common myths about Elementary RE:
Am I committed to every Sunday for the whole school year?
No. It is a team approach—our goal is 2 catechists and 2 aides to
give flexibility each Sunday so that only 2 of the 4 need to be present each week. We also have a sub list to contact in the event
that 2 of the 4 are not available on a given Sunday.

Do I need to be a parent to help out?
It doesn’t matter. Many times, our parents are the busiest ones.
Most of the time our confirmed high school teens, single adults,
empty-nesters or retired adults have more time on their hands to
devote to our parish children. Parents are the #1 Catechists for
their children but it is wonderful for the kids to get continuing education outside of their home life. However, it is also a strong testament for kids to see their parents in the classrooms, showing
that RE is important to them too. Free childcare is offered too!!
What if I don’t know it all?

throughout our entire lives and this is a great opportunity for you to

Do I have to be Catholic or confirmed to help?
All Catechists should be confirmed and practicing their Catholic

they can take in this ministry!

Come watch “40”-a compelling documentary, Sunday, August 23 at 11:15 am in the meeting room at 2 East Wolfe.
“40” is a new documentary that examines the effects of
abortion on our nation over the last 40 years since Roe. V
Wade. The film showcases interviews with dozens of prolife leaders, and presents abortion as the most important
human rights issue of our time. 40 looks at both sides of this
heated issue and addresses some of the strongest arguments for the pro-choice position.
40 also presents heartfelt testimonies from post abortive
women and reports on the youth as the generation that will
end abortion.

BLESSED SACRAMENT CATHOLIC CHURCH
HARRISONBURG, VA
No importa.

What is VIRTUS?
VIRTUS is a program created by the National Catholic Risk Retention Group in the United States with a "Protecting God's
Children" component that combats sexual abuse of children in the Church. It is currently in use in over 80 dioceses in the
United States.
VIRTUS focuses on educating teachers, parents, and other adults who interact with children about sexual abuse and
providing them with information to help prevent abuse. This takes place in 'awareness sessions' led by trained facilitators.
The awareness sessions consist of videos, worksheets, and discussions. The videos incorporate interviews with both victims and convicted perpetrators.
VIRTUS is a required element for anyone who plans to become involved in a ministry that comes in contact with children or
youth. It is also a great resource for parents and grandparents!!!
To register go to www.virtusonline.org and follow the prompts. There is no cost for the program and free childcare can be
provided. Please contact Valerie at the office for more information
