Weekly Reflection
Reflexión Semanal
Steadfast Love
Amor que Perdura
Today’s readings and prayers remind us that our love
for God must be steadfast; we must “fix our hearts on
the place where true gladness is found.” The reading
from the Old Testament gives the example of the Israelites whom Joshua addresses, “If it does not please
you to serve the Lord, decide today whom you will
serve.” The Israelites respond that they “will serve the
Lord, for he is our God.” This response reflects the
words of the responsorial psalm, “The Lord is close to
the brokenhearted; and those who are crushed in spirit
he saves,” as the Israelites acknowledge their belief in
God in spite of the many trials and hardships they have
endured. In John’s gospel, Peter echoes the faith of
the Israelites when Jesus asks him if the twelve want to
leave. Peter answers him, “Master, to whom shall we
go? You have the words of eternal life.” Jesus’ teaching on the Eucharist from the previous Sundays’ gospels challenge the people. Many of his disciples can
not make the profession that Peter makes and “they
returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him.” Jesus’ teachings are paradoxical and
profound. As the early community grows, Saint Paul,
in his letter to the Ephesians, attempts to make Jesus’
relationship with his church, our Eucharistic community, more understandable. He
uses the analogy of marital love to explain
the intimacy and oneness that Jesus has
with his church. He encourages the members of the community to “be subordinate
to one another out of reverence for
Christ.” To put another before self defines
Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice for each one of
us.
This is the steadfast love we
acknowledge when we come together in
faith to celebrate the Eucharist
contesta, “Señor, ¿a quién iremos?
Muchos discípulos no podían profesar

Did you Know?
Back to school: carpool safety
Beginning a new school year can mean
starting up a new carpool – trading rides to and from
sports and after-school activities with other parents.
Teach your children that they should never get into a car
with someone they don’t know. They should also have a
parent’s permission before they accept a ride with someone they do know. If you do have to send someone to
pick up your kids, establish a family code word. If the driver gives your children the code word, they know that it’s
safe to get in the car. For a copy of the article “Safety

. ¿Sabías que Fray Junípero tenía
una especial devoción a la
Santísima Virgen María? A la edad
de 36 años llegó a Vera Cruz y un
día antes de que llegara al
convento Franciscano en la
Ciudad de México se detuvo en el
Santuario de Nuestra Señora de
Guadalupe. Tenía un inmenso
afecto por la Virgen María y
participar por primera vez en esta
devoción Mexicana a Nuestra

Did you know that Fray Junípero had a
special devotion to the Blessed Virgin
Mary? At the age of 36 he arrived in Vera

Franciscan convent in in Mexico City he
stopped at the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. He had a deep and long-standing affection for
the Virgin Mary and participating for the first time in this
Mexican devotion to Our Lady was an intense experience
for him. The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe is venerated in most of the missions. Since then, Our Lady of Guadalupe has become, in fact, the Patroness of the whole
American continent.
For Men Of Irish Descent
If you are a practicing Catholic of Irish descent and interested in perpetuating the history of the contribution the Irish in America have
made to the Catholic Church and our Country, then you
should be a member of The Ancient Order of Hibernians.
The AOH is the oldest and largest Irish Catholic Lay Organization in America and can trace its roots back to Ireland over 300 years ago and was formed in America in
1836. We strive to foster and preserve Irish traditions in
art, music, dance and sport as well as support our Parishes in any way we can. There are number of Divisions in
California and we think there should be one in Ventura.
