Pastor’s Letter
Dear Parishioners,
It was a wonderful annual Priest’s Day at Ocean Shores for this year. The theme for this annual event was
“Rekindling Our Zeal: The Risen Christ Encounters His Priests”. Our keynote speaker was Bishop
Michael Barber, Bishop of Oakland, California. In addition to different workshop sessions, we had many
other activities to participate in, such as: golf, bowling; cooking; Arizona Horseshoes; walking along the
beach each day, and playing Ping-Pong. We had an annual health checkup, talked with a personal health
coach; talked to a diversified representative; met with other priests; gathered in a small support group, and caught up with other
priests from the Archdiocese to celebrate daily Mass and daily prayers. We celebrated the anniversary of numerous priests and
prayed for deceased priests who had passed away during the year, and had meals together. We had a wonderful session on “Feed My
Lambs: The Role of the Parish Priest in the RCIA” and had some time for Q&A session with the keynote speaker. We thank you for
your support and for praying for us while we were at Priest’s Day. We thank you for supporting those families who had lost their
loved ones within the last few weeks. We had several funeral services and the Lazarus group minister provided great comfort and
assistance to those families in the preparation of those celebrations for their loved ones. We thank the outreach ministers from our
regional parishes for reaching out to those families. We congratulate those couples that have just made their commitment (their
vows) to love and to live with each other the rest of their life in good and bad times, and they will support and raise their family in
God’s love.
Transition is hard for us, because we love those people who care for us and they do not want us to feel uncomfortable or make us take
a step that we feel is a challenge for us (to deal with change). However, change can be good or bad, depending on how we perceive
the situation. Change can give us an opportunity for a new way and is also a new blessing, if we are able to adopt and to adjust with
it. We have a change of Priest in our regional parishes. We will be missing Father Juan Carlos very much, because he has been
wonderful in assisting us at Sacred Heart’s Church for the last few years. His energy and love for us is very clear on what he says
and does. He will be working with another regional parish, which needs his ministry there and this will give him the opportunity to
learn and experience more (in his ministry). We will have a farewell celebration for him on the date that we are planning on it with
him. I will inform you when I know. It is important for us to get together to thank him for what he has done for us and bless upon
him for his new assignment. We also need to welcome Father Patrick McDermott who will be with us in our regional parishes.
Father Patrick McDermott is a seasonal Pastor of the Archdiocese of Seattle and he is the Pastor of Sacred Heart’s Church in Lacey,
WA. He is a senior priest of the Archdiocese of Seattle. We are very blessed to have him, because he has served many parishes in the
Archdiocese and was the former Priest’s Personal Director and speaks Spanish as well as English. I am meeting with him to ask him
for advice and to assist us with the Pastoral Care within our regional parishes. He is happy to join me to serve you as Parish Priest in
assisting with the Sacraments, so he will be replacing Father Juan Carlos. We thank the Archbishop for seeing the need within our
regional parishes to ask Father Patrick to assist us. We are very thankful to Father Patrick for seeing the need to assist us in this capacity, even though he is retired. Please take care of him and welcome him to our regional parishes. His wisdom and his love for the
Spanish speaking community is so powerful and this is shown in his commitment and care for us all, by being with us. Please join
me to thank Father Juan Carlos by coming to his farewell party and to pray for him, and join me to welcome Father Patrick
McDermott who will come to be with us in September. There will be transition time, so we will have time for the step of planning
and supporting each other with this period of change.
We thank you for taking time to assist the parish in maintaining our parish ground (keeping it clean and beautiful) for the summer
time. Our parish grounds is lovingly maintained and looked after by our parishioners, so we deeply appreciate you for your love and
care in keeping our parish looking so nice and welcoming. It is hard to keep our parish grounds filled with flowers and plants, if we
do not water them during the summer time. We thank the parish leadership for coming to the last meeting in June to take care of
issues and concerns of the parish. We will not be meeting until September, so they can have a little time to be with their family for
the summer. We are having the summer school for students from the ages of 5-10. We thank the Sisters of the Lovers of the Holy
Cross of Go Vap for offering this program for our students within our regional parishes. We also thank the English as a Second
Language classes, which is taught by both Dylan and Katrina together with many others who assist them for this program.
We thank those parishioners and staff who represented our parish at the Pastoral Planning of our deanery. There are many different
opportunities for our parishes to share and support others in the programs and support the staff in order to provide better pastoral care
for all of us. If you have any question in this area or you want to read the information on this process of planning, you can contact
those members who represented us for this planning.
We thank you for your support of the Youth Group at St. John of the Woods for their second car wash to raise funds for their summer
convention. We thank their leader, Jacob, who has led them within the last few years and has built up a wonderful youth program for
us at St. John of the Woods. Please keep him in your prayers for his vocation.
May the Lord continue to bless upon you and your family! Thank you for your continue support our parish even though you are
away for a summer vacation with your family, please remember our parish in your contribution and prayers.
Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Sacramental Marriage
ST. ANN:
8:30am - 7:00pm Thursdays
5pm - 7pm Tuesdays Divine Mercy & Mass (Samoan Comm.)
7:00pm Fridays Mass (Vietnamese Language)
by Barbara & Clarence Leingang
The Roman Catholic Church defines Sacramental Marriage as
“the matrimonial covenant by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of their whole life. It is by
its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring.” The Church is custodian and
steward of the sacraments including the sacrament of matrimony.
Because of this custodial characteristic, it has the right and the
duty to defend and explain the subject of marriage. To change
the definition of marriage both in the “civil marriage” and
“sacramental marriage” goes against all that the Church has
taught from the time of Jesus Christ down to the present era. St.
Paul taught in his letter to the Ephesians (Eph 5:21) the correlation between the husband/wife relationship in marriage and the
spousal relationship of Christ to the church. (CCC 1616) The
catechism speaks of an efficacious sign as the sacrament of the
covenant of Christ and the Church (CCC 1617). To change the
definition of marriage to also include same sex marriage is more
than just words. Words and their meanings are malleable and can
change or be manipulated. The debate going on around us concerning the definition of marriage is not just about words but rather an argument about the fundamental core meaning of marriage. If this is innately true of civil marriage then it is infinitely
true in the case of sacramental marriage. The ramification of
same sex marriage becoming law will impact the Catholic
Church and the inalienable right to freedom of religion.

priesthood. Father Jennings was pastor of

the parish alive. During his time in 1983 Hispanic Community was welcomed and a Parish Council was
formed which provided excellent lay leadership to the parish.
Prayer of the Faithful ~ June 28th
That God, who did not make death and who is the source of
all life, may bring an end to abortion and all other forms of
violence in our world, we pray to the Lord...
Respect Life
Are there any exceptions to the right and sanctity of a preborn
child's life? No, every single life is precious and irreplaceable,
without exception!
- Exception for life of the mother? There is never a medical
need to commit an abortion of a precious, preborn person in
order to save the life of the mother.
- Exception for the health of the mother? Pregnancy always
carries risks and therefore pro-abortion judges will always use
the "health of the mother" to justify abortions.
- Exception for rape? No preborn person can be justifiably
murdered because their existence is due to the tragedy of a
rape.

Stewardship Corner
Our Annual Catholic
Appeal goal was$27,128
the good news is that we
have reached our goal and
surpassed it by $11,554
(38,683 total pledges).
We have had 53% of the parish participate;
178 families have joined together to make this
goal and surpass our assigned amount. Here at
St. John’s we have 335 registered families.
The bad news is we still have a number of
families who have not responded. For those
who have not yet responded to the ACA, there
is still time to do so. There are some envelopes
in the back of the church that you can use to
commit.
By the way, the church pews that we
all us are the subject of our Annual Appeal
Rebate. These funds that we have coming
back to us $11,555 so far will be applied to the
purchase of the new pews! The cost of the new
pews is $81,636. Our present pews were installed in December 1947 (68 years old). The
more people who still come forward and donate to the Annual Catholic Appeal will lessen
the load to pay for the pews. Since we all use
the pews it would be wonderful to have all of

Queridos Feligreses:
Fr. Tuan Nguyen D. Min Padtor
