Today is the last Sunday of the liturgical year. In a sermon, a priest once said: "This is the last sermon I will preach this year." The people cheered. Then he said, "Next Sunday is the beginning of a new year." Pray for the poor souls in purgatory during the month of November. Keep our clergy in your prayers. November 22, 2015 • Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe 5 Pastor’s Letter Dear Parishioners, This week we will be celebrating Thanksgiving. It is the day we give thanks for all the good things in our lives. Yet, for a Catholic, we celebrate Thanksgiving every time we gather to celebrate the Eucharist. Since the word “Eucharist” means “thanksgiving,” Catholics are essentially grateful people. Consider how we celebrate Thanksgiving. We gather together, we have a feast, and we tell stories. This is exactly what we do at the celebration of the Eucharist. We gather as a faith community, we eat the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ, and we hear the Word of God proclaimed as the story of our salvation. We sing, we show hospitality, we invite, we offer gifts and we join together in prayer. Every Eucharist is a Thanksgiving. To offer thanksgiving is one of the most human experiences we can do. It elevates us and connects us to one another and to God. Active participation in the Eucharist is not so much in doing something as it is in being truly present, aware and grateful for what God is doing. Presence is not about doing, it is more about being, and we are called to be a grateful people. If we are really present to every moment and aware of what God is doing, then we could appreciate ever more the many gifts that God has placed in our lives. However to be grateful for what God is doing right now, we have to live in the present moment. We cannot long for a past that never really was or a future that will never really be. Instead, we have the present moment, and that moment is a precious present from God that we need to unwrap and enjoy. By opening ourselves to the present moment, we have an opportunity to make ourselves a present to one another in thanksgiving and love. This year, I am most grateful to all the wonderful parishioners that are here at St. Alphonsus. We have over fifty-four different ministries. Every event and meeting is planned, supported and implemented by the wonderful members of the parish. And every person in this parish has made themselves a gift of love and thanksgiving to the entire community and to me. So, this year I want to say “Thank you!” to every person that comes to our parish. You have made this a wonderful place to be, and I am most grateful for your presence here and the gift that you are to one another. Yours in the Redeemer, Rev. Donald B. Williard, Jr. C.Ss.R. Upcoming Events Gifts of Love! The red, green and yellow slips are again in the pews. Our Gifts of Love bring so much JOY to so many in need. Please take as many slips as you like, attach them to New Unwrapped gifts and place them into the “gift” boxes at the church entrances. The gifts get distributed to CEAP, Sharing and Caring Hands, Aliveness Project, the Mental Health Unit at Regions Hospital and any requests brought to our Pastor’s attention. We hope that we can count on your great generosity as in the past. We always have a special need for gifts for Teens and warm adult clothing. Thank you and God Bless you!
