BASILICA
THE LITTLE FLOWER
OF THE NATIONAL SHRINE OF
Year of Mercy - Año de la Misericordia
Our Lady of Mount Carmel & St. Therese Parish
THE DOOR OF MERCY
LA PUERTA DE LA MISERICORDIA
The Door of Mercy is a special Holy Door which Pope
Francis has asked to be opened in every Diocese during the Extraordinary Holy Year in order to allow the
faithful in every part of the world to experience the
Mercy of the Father in its fullness. In the Bull of Indiction Misericordiae Vultus, he writes: “On the same Sunday [Third Sunday of Advent], I decree that in every
local church, at the cathedral – the mother church of
the faithful in any particular area–or, alternatively, at
the co-cathedral or another church of special significance, a Door of Mercy will be opened for the duration of the Holy Year. At the discretion of the local
ordinary, a similar door may be opened at any shrine
frequented by large groups of pilgrims, since visits to
these holy sites are so often grace-filled moments, as
people discover a path to conversion” (MV 3).
Indulgence and Conditions
The season of grace which is the Jubilee of Mercy, will
naturally be characterized by the possibility of obtaining the plenary indulgence through certain pious
exercises culminating in entering through the Holy
Door, the Door of Mercy. These pious exercises will
accompany the prayer and celebration of the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist as concrete
signs of conversion and “immersion” in the Mercy of
the Father.
“To experience and obtain the Indulgence, the faithful
are called to make a brief pilgrimage to the Holy
Door, open in every Cathedral or in the churches designated by the Diocesan Bishop, and in the four Papal
Basilicas in Rome, as a sign of the deep desire for true
conversion. Likewise, I dispose that the Indulgence may
be obtained in the Shrines in which the Door of Mercy is
open and in the churches which traditionally are identified as Jubilee Churches. It is important that this moment
be linked, first and foremost, to the Sacrament of Reconciliation and to the celebration of the Holy Eucharist
with a reflection on mercy. It will be necessary to accompany these celebrations with the profession of faith and
with prayer for me and for the intentions that I bear in
my heart for the good of the Church and of the entire
world”. (Pope Francis).
Indulgencia y Condiciones
(Papa Francisco).

A pilgrimage is a journey undertaken for a religious purpose most often to a sacred place.
The word “pilgrim,” derived from the Latin peregrinum, conveys the idea of wandering over a distance, but it is
not just aimless wandering. It is a journey with a purpose, and that purpose is to honor God.
One of the earliest usages of the word is found in the writings of Saint Augustine of Hippo (354-430). His work,
Peregrinatio, described a Christian spiritual journey as a kind of self-imposed exile of the pilgrim in which he
searched for God’s Truth in his wanderings while visiting the holy shrines of the Faith.

so that we may begin mailing them to you.
Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from
being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in
created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal,
and assured Paradise to the repentant thief.
Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the
words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you
knew the gift of God!”
You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the
God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible
face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified.
You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in
weakness in order that they may feel compassion for
those in ignorance and error:
let everyone who approaches them feel sought after,
loved, and forgiven by God.
Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with
its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a
year of grace from the Lord,
and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring
good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives
and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind.
We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession
of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign
with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.
Amen.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
January 18-25, 2016
Collection for the Church in Latin America
Inspires All to "Share Your Faith"
The theme of this year's Week
of Prayer for Christian Unity is
"Called to Proclaim the Mighty
Acts of the Lord." (cf. Peter 2:9).
According to Graymoor Ecumenical & Interreligious Institute
(GEII). . . , "The theme finds its
origins in the First Letter of Peter.
The relationship between baptism and proclamation, and the
calling shared by all the baptized to proclaim the mighty
acts of the Lord was inspired by two verses from the
First Letter of St Peter." To purchase materials for your
worship community for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, check out GEII on the web. . . !
The annual national Collection for the Church in Latin
America (CLA) will be the weekend of January 23-24.
The 2016 campaign highlights the faith of Latin America and the many opportunities we have to share faith
with them. We also recognize the tremendous benefit
of having our Latin American brothers and sisters in
the Church and the revitalization their fervor brings to
the faith. In addition to offering our help and support
to the Catholics of Latin America, we have much to
learn from them.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops invite you to aid our faithful brothers and sisters in the
