The widow in today’s gospel was commended by Jesus for her sacrificial giving because she contributed all she had. Next weekend, we shall be introducing the “Grateful Living, Joyful Giving” program to parishioners at our Masses. The past year has been one of tremendous change for our parish with the arrival of the priests of the Missionary Society of St. Paul. Due to the welcoming spirit of our parish, we are registering new parishioners, our ministries are expanding and we are growing new ones. Early this year, we conducted a survey of where we are as a parish. The survey has brought us to a better understanding that our parishioners need more opportunities to meet and grow in their faith apart from the regular Sunday attendance. The result of the survey has led to a Master Plan that is still in progress. When the Finance Council presented the budget for this fiscal year, we made a very conservative budget based on the economic situation of our environment at this time. Even as we take this into consideration, we do not want to slow the growth of the various ministries. We want to be able to meet the needs of all those who come to our parish looking for growth in their faith and for their children. We also want to do this in a very comfortable way. That is why it is so important to maintain our facilities and make some improvements where they are needed. My sincere thanks to the many parishioners who are already giving sacrificially. We need every parishioner to do this. We must increase our Sunday offertory collection in order to continue to expand our mission as a parish community. I urge our new and returning parishioners to support the parish generously. I realize that much has already been asked of our long-time parishioners. God bless your giving. Nevertheless, I ask that you consider making more sacrifices as our faith matters. Prayerfully consider increasing the level of your financial support to the parish. There are so many improvements needed in the parish. We want to pay off our debt. We want to expand our ministries. We want to add visual technology to the sanctuary to enhance our worship. We will be able to achieve these and many more goals with more parishioners committing themselves to a grateful living, joyful giving. I count on all parishioners to make sacrifices and increase their weekly offering. You will be receiving a brochure in the mail this week. Please review its contents and prayerfully consider how you can support our parish even more. Our goal through this program is to substantially increase our regular offertory contributions. Other parishes that have conducted similar programs have seen their offertory increase between 20% and 40%. Please review the suggested guidelines for giving which are enclosed. A special Commitment Sunday will be held at Masses next weekend, November 14th and 15th, where each family will be asked to make a prayerful sacrifice and complete a Commitment Card of the gifts they will share to support the works of St. Mary Magdalene Church. Thank you so much for your involvement in the life of our parish. Jesus praised the widow in the gospel today. The widow in the first reading also had her needs met as she generously provided for the need of the prophet Elijah. God cannot be outdone in generosity. Let us live our lives gratefully for God’s providence and also give joyfully in support of the Church. I am extremely appreciative of everyone’s past generosity to the parish. I thank you in advance for your support, understanding, generosity and kindness. —Fr Felix P. 2 Time & Talent Ministries Are you new to our parish or have been coming for a while but are not yet registered? We offer you a warm welcome to St. Mary Magdalene parish. Becoming an active parishioner begins when you are counted as a parishioner. In order to continue our mission and ministries, we encourage all parishioners to spend time in prayer and discussion with your family reflecting on the needs of the parish and your current giving level. We look forward to seeing all of our parishioners at Mass, especially during our special Commitment Weekend – November 14th & 15th, 2015. If you have any questions regarding the “Grateful Living, Joyful Giving” program, please feel free to contact Wanda Conley, Business Manager at the parish office. Tuesday, January 19, 2016 Thursday, February 18, 2016 Saturday, March 5, 2016 Share Your Blessings is a Christmas gift program, operated by the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, that provides toys and other gifts for children ages 0-17. Last year, we provided Christmas presents for more than 971 children, but we couldn’t do it without your help! For many of these children, this will be the only gift they receive this Christmas. We want to serve both the children and their parents so they don’t have to make a choice between Christmas presents or other necessities this holiday season. Starting the weekend of November 7th, 2015, you may choose an angel from the tree in the narthex, purchase a gift for that child, and bring the unwrapped gift by December 7th, 2015. You may drop off your gift before Mass under the tree in the Narthex or at the parish office Monday through Friday. Each month, St. Mary Magdalene Catholic students pick a community service project. For the month of December, our 5th graders are raising money for Wreaths Across America. For every $15 raised, a wreath will be placed on a veteran's grave at the Houston Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Saturday, December 12. To donate money towards the wreaths, please go to www.wreathsacrossamerica.org, click on the “Sponsor Locally” link, type in “St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Community” in the “Find a Fundraising Group” search field, then click on the “Donate” link. You can also drop off donations at the front office of the school. The students are also raising funds by selling t-shirts honoring our active duty military and veterans. Each shirt purchased also funds a wreath. The campaign page for the t-shirts is www.booster.com/smmcs-waa and will continue until November 19th. The 5th graders would like to invite everyone in our St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Community to join them on December 12, 2015, as they place wreaths on the graves at the Houston National Cemetery (10410 Veterans Memorial Dr., Houston TX). The next devotion to the Holy Souls will take place in the chapel on Monday, Nov. 9, at 7:00 P.M. All are invited to pray for the souls of our loved ones who may be in Purgatory awaiting our prayers. The love we showed them while alive can be carried forward after their physical death. November is a good time to consider spending some time with Our Lord in Adoration. He waits in our chapel for us to come and give Him thanks, ask forgiveness, give adoration, place petitions, and pray for others and ourselves. Don’t deny yourself the pleasure of His company during this earthly life. Flower Bouquets for the Sanctuary A wonderful way to remember a deceased loved one, or to celebrate a special occasion such as an anniversary, birthday, or special intentions, is to place a bouquet of flowers in the sanctuary for Sunday Masses. Your name and the name of the person you are honoring will be published in the Sunday bulletin. A donation of $75 will help defray the cost of the flowers. Requests and donations can be made at the office. Please allow two weeks before your special dates so they will make the bulletin deadline. NO REQUESTS DURING ADVENT. NORTHEAST CATHOLIC SINGLES, A MINISTRY FOR SINGLES AGES 40+, gathers on Wednesday, November 11, at 7:00 P.M. at Zachary's Cajun Cafe, 716 Kingwood Drive in Kingwood. For more info, contact Elizabeth Schields (281-441-2552 or [email protected]) or subscribe to us on Flocknote on St. Mary Magdalene’s P. 8 website. Shopping With Jesus Ivana T. Meshell, Director of Adult Faith Formation On my day off recently, I was getting groceries and heard White Christmas being played in the store. This was on All Souls Day. To be fair (from the direction of the sound) it was probably a toy or a doll, not the store intercom, but it’s still unnerving to hear White Christmas on the 2nd of November (especially in Texas, right?). It got me thinking: can we as Catholic Christians strive to make the holiday shopping season different this year? We who are baptized are chosen by God to live our lives differently, in a way that reflects our Christian values first, not the values of this world. Because we are constantly bombarded with advertising and messages from the merchants and media about what is important, it takes a deliberate, conscious, and consistent effort for us and disciples of Jesus to decide what is best for ourselves and our families in light of Christ and the teachings of his Church because the voice of the culture is often far louder than the sound of our faith echoing in our ears. We must turn to God and listen. There is nothing wrong with shopping if it is done—as everything else—with serious consideration to how Jesus wants us to think and act so that we may live as God’s children, living the baptism we have received. Shop with Jesus in mind! Simple suggestions to a more Christ-valued holiday season: 1. Think about how you are going to choose God-centered values this holiday season and discuss your ideas with your loved ones. Start doing this now so the “Christmas rush” does not swallow you whole! 2. Do everything you can not to shop on Sundays—not in the store and not on the Internet. There is absolutely no Christmas present we need enough to break God’s commandments to get it. The world will tell us otherwise, and we will have to plan ahead so that we don’t find it “necessary” to shop on Sunday. It’s time for us to obey the 3rd commandment and tell the world “No, we will not live this way; we have given ourselves to Christ.” Make exceptions according to what is truly necessary. 3. Consider what gifts would truly enrich the lives of the recipients. Acquiring more items to possess is not always the best form of gift. Perhaps there are other ways to give, such as giving experiences rather than things. Visit, have a good meal together, experience something new with friends and loved ones. Pray together. Go to a church function together. Or offer some form of food as a gift. Perhaps offer a portion of your gift to a charitable cause. For example, our parish blanket drive begins in January. Why not give a card saying that you will donate a new blanket to the drive in someone’s name? 4. Go out of your way to be kind to the people in the stores. Thank your checkout person at the beginning of your transaction, not the customary, bland “thank you” at the end. Allow others to go first. Smile at people. Put things back where you found them. Be heroically patient. People notice these things. No amount of preaching matters if we don’t preach with our lives. What will you do this year to fill your shopping experiences with the love of Jesus? Share with me your insights: [email protected]. Be sure to sign up for FlockNotes on our parish home page www.st-mm.com so you can stay informed. SPECIAL PARISH EVENT! You are invited to bring your own favorite statue, picture or religious object to put on display for the evening. Everyone welcomed!
