John McCormick O Lord, our God, with love and care you provided companions to the apostles to assist them in teaching and proclaiming what you are with us. Grant to us, your servants here in the Diocese of Santa Rosa, priests to do your work, for our need is great. Amen. This weekend the church celebrates the Feast of Pentecost, the birthday of the church and the gift of the Holy Spirit—the sending of the Holy Spirit by our Lord Jesus Christ. Having been with his disciples for forty days after the resurrection, the Lord Jesus Christ ascended to His glory at the right hand of God the Father. On the fiftieth day, the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit, was given “to renew the face of the earth.” Pentecost (Greek Pentekoste meaning “fifty”) closes the Easter Season. It celebrates the overwhelming experience of God giving the Holy Spirit to the first community of believers in the Risen Christ, the Church. The color of the church vestments and decorations for Pentecost is red, which symbolizes the intense love and fire of the Holy Spirit. The Easter season ends with the conclusion of vespers. Ordinary time resumes Monday following Pentecost, May 25th (8th week of ordinary time) and continues until evening prayer of the first Sunday of Advent, November 29th. The Easter candle is borne in exit procession at the end of the Sunday Mass 1100 am as a sign that the Easter Season has come to an end. Pray to the Holy Spirit Come Holy Spirit enlighten our minds. We beg you Lord to send the Holy Spirit upon us so that inspired and encouraged by the Spirit, we may fulfill the duties that are ours, to carry the cross with patience and to grow daily in Christian perfection. On this Pentecost weekend, we celebrate our national holiday of Memorial Day. As pastor and on behalf of Fr. Isaac and the parishioners of St. Francis Solano Parish, I salute our country “one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all”. I pray for our service people at home and abroad; at peace and in harms way; living and dead; past, present, and future. I wish all our parishioners and visitors a Happy Memorial Day weekend. God Bless America. LOVE AND PRAYERS, FR.
