First Snowfall
Dear Parish Family,
It was quite a storm this week. As I watched the snow I
remembered learning poems about snow when I was in
school. In those days I thought of snow as an unquestioned
gift from God — a divine break from schoolwork and a
neighborhood transformed into a playground. That was long
before we received 24-hour live storm center reports of our
efforts to battle an epic storm and restore our world to
normalcy.
I loved the poem “The First Snow Fall” by James Russell
Lowell. Its first few lines seemed to capture the beautiful way
a snowfall can transform our seeing of the world. Actually, I
probably did not read much further. I was happy to read
about the winter wonderland in Lowell’s description. In those
days it was plenty for me.
But the father in the poem has some very serious things on his
mind - his grief and loss of a child. Is the snowfall a beautiful
blessing in his world of pain? I am not sure. But he answers
his child’s questions with confidence and with grace: only the
all good Father who cares for us below makes the snow.
These days we have so few experiences of power beyond
us. A winter storm seems to shatter the illusion that we have
everything planned, that all is under control. It is good for us,
I think, to deal with a power beyond us. I do know this:
God’s power delights and blesses us and sometimes frightens
and confuses us. It is always with reverence and awe that we
stand before this power beyond us.
The poet captures what the storm center cannot.
The Snow had begun in the gloaming,
And busily all the night
Had been heaping field and highway
With a silence deep and white.
Every pine and fir and hemlock
Wore ermine too dear for an earl,
And the poorest twig on the elm-tree
Was ridged inch deep with pearl.
From sheds new-roofed with Carrara
Came Chanticleer’s muffled crow,
The stiff rails softened to swan’s-down,
And still fluttered down the snow.
I stood and watched by the window
The noiseless work of the sky,
And the sudden flurries of snow-birds,
Like brown leaves whirling by.
I thought of a mound in sweet Auburn
Where a little headstone stood;
How the flakes were folding it gently,
As did robins the babes in the wood.
Up spoke our own little Mabel,
Saying, “Father, who makes it snow?”
And I told of the good All-father
Who cares for us here below.
Again I looked at the snow-fall,
And thought of the leaden sky
That arched o’er our first great sorrow,
When that mound was heaped so high.
I remembered the gradual patience
That fell from that cloud like snow,
Flake by flake, healing and hiding
The scar that renewed our woe.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
And again to the child I whispered,
“The snow that husheth all,
Darling, the merciful Father
Alone can make it fall!”
Rev. Michael A. Vetrano
Then, with eyes that saw not, I kissed her;
And she, kissing back, could not know
That my kiss was given to her sister,
Folded close under deepening snow.
A Note from Religious Education Director:
Jennifer Ferrantino
Religious Ed had a very busy weekend last week! We had our young
students receive the sacrament of Reconciliation and our Confirmation
candidates attended our Enrollment Mass! Thank you to all those who
made these events enriching and wonderful!
As we continue to prepare for sacraments and furthering our love for the Gospel I am reminded of a
short excerpt from Max Lucado’s Book Grace for the Moment:
As we continue to help our students to live out their faith every day, this may be a good reminder as
to how to achieve those goals.
In case of inclement weather please check WLNG radio. If Southampton Schools are closed due to
weather Religious Ed will be closed also. Thank you!

I choose love…
No occasion justifies hatred;
no injustice warrants bitterness. I choose love
Today I will love God and what God loves.
I choose joy…
I will invite God to be the God of circumstance.
I will refuse the temptation to be cynical.
The tool of the lazy thinker. I will refuse to see
People as anything less than human beings,
Created by God. I will refuse to see any problem as
Anything less than an opportunity to see God.
I choose peace…
I will live forgiven. I will forgive so that I may live.

Lent Draws Near
Help Gather Last Years Palm
Lent and Easter are early this year. Lent begins on February 18th—
Ash Wednesday. As many Catholics know, the ashes used on Ash
Wednesday come from the burning of last year’s palm branches. To
help us celebrate this connection, you are all invited to bring palm
from last year to church on the weekend of February 14/15 so that they
may be used to mark the beginning of Lent this year.
Lenten Mission 2015
Meeting Jesus
This Lent our parish will welcome Fr. Pat
Kelly for a three night mission, March 9, 10,

African Mission Society, Father Pat’s whole
priesthood has been devoted to mission
work. He has served the poorest of God’s
poor and will share with us in wit and song
how he has met Jesus along the way. Please

Reflections On the Gospel from Pax Christi
February 1, 2015
The key message in Sunday’s readings is “Repent.” This is a message for all times and all peoples.
One of the greatest evils repeated throughout human history and demanding repentance is genocide,
and one of the worst examples of genocide was the Jewish holocaust during WWII. Amazingly,
however, the holocaust also gave us some of the greatest lessons of human endurance, faith, hope, and
love. On Sunday, February 8th, 2015, Pax Christi Metro New York is hosting Etty, a one-woman play
about Etty Hillesum, one of the holocaust’s greatest messengers of those lessons. Etty was a young
Dutch Jewish woman living in Amsterdam during World War II who wrote prolifically about her
loves, her work, her deep faith, and her moment in history. In the process, she challenges us to rethink
questions of resistance and humanity and to consider our own responsibility in today’s world of fear
and struggle. Susan Stein will perform and lead a discussion in St. Joseph’s Church, Sixth Avenue
between Washington Place and Waverly Place in Greenwich Village, starting at 2:30 PM. Reserve
your space now by contacting the PCMNY office at [email protected] or 212-420-0250 or by
going to www.nycharities.org. Seats are $25 in advance, $30 at the door, and $15 with a student ID.

Our bell tower renewal will require running wire from the bell controller in the
sacristy to the bell tower. This includes several low voltage cables for control and
possibly a new 110 service wire. It is about 75 feet from back to front through the
crawl space and about 30 feet up the tower. Must be licensed work. Interested in
helping?
Running Outdoor conduit
We need 4” underground conduit from our rectory to the church to accommodate
cable for internet and security wiring. Mostly lawn to trench, one sidewalk and one
driveway to cross.
Remember: The value of work done by businesses or professionals is tax deductible as a
charitable contribution...

Ministries in Need of Your Help
Lectors, Ushers, Eucharistic Ministers
Spirituality
Just about every one of our masses can use additional Lectors, Ushers, and Eucharistic Ministers. I
would especially love to see some of the youngest members of our parish be of service in this way.
Our 5 PM mass on Sunday needs the most support right now. We are often very short of all three
ministries at this mass. If you are interested please contact Fr. Mike [email protected].
Training will be held on April 25th at McGann Mercy High School.
Sexton for Saturday 5 PM
Fancy word but a sexton is a person who opens and closes the church! We need someone who is
available after the 5 PM mass on Saturdays, especially when we have visiting priests. It takes just
about 10 minutes to close and secure our church at the end of the day. Interested? Please contact Fr.
Mike [email protected]

APOSTOLADO HISPANO
Los signos del
Reino de Dios Jesús acompaña
sus palabras con
numerosos
"milagros,
prodigios y
No
muerte, Jesús realizó unos signos mesiánicos; no
