Best Christmas Card Ever
Dear Parish Family,
I love receiving Christmas cards from members of our parish. They are so wonderful and so
different. Some are spiritual, some traditional, many modern with pictures of family (mostly
the kids) so we can all see how everyone had grown this year. I thought we might have a
Christmas card contest this year, but in all the rush of Christmas I never got the word out. But
if I had, the one below would surely be the winner! It comes from Arthur Muller, a
parishioner who still volunteers to help with the collection count each week, and is a picture of
Christmas Day Mass in 1944. Arthur was stationed at the time in the South Pacific. The note
with his card explained that he and his fellow P.T. boat patrol members had managed to find a
safe hiding place on Christmas Eve and their chaplain was able to say Mass
for them on Christmas Day. I am happy to share the card and his note:

boat base was set
up in Mangarin
Bay. At night the
boats anchored
out in the bay
where we could
get underway quickly if more Kamikazes came over. By Christmas Eve things had quieted down
pretty good so we ran our boat a little way up a river and nosed it into the swampy jungle, which
grew thick right up to the edge. A couple of guys went over the side with machetes and cut
branches which we used to camouflage the boat. It was like decorating for Christmas and created a
festive atmosphere. As usual, Washing Machine Charley flew over shooting bursts of machine gun
tracer bullets, trying to draw our fire so he could locate our boats and drop a bomb or two. Tokyo
Rose was on the radio trying to make us sad with songs like “I’ll be home for Christmas”, but
everyone regarded her as a big joke. On Christmas day there was a mass on shore near the base
and any of us who wanted to go were dropped off to attend. I took the enclosed picture with an
old box camera.

We mourn the passing of Anne Bernagozzi on December 20, 2016 at the age of 77. A mass of
Christian Burial was celebrated at the Basilica Parish of Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary on
December 23rd by Rev. Michael Vetrano. A private cremation followed. Our sympathies go out to
her children, grandchildren, family and friends.

Frances Andrews
We mourn the passing of Frances “Fran” Andrews on December 12, 2016 at the
age of 92. A mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at the Basilica Parish of
Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary on December 22, 2016 by Rev. Msgr. William
Gill. Burial followed in Calverton National Cemetery. Fran was predeceased
by her husband, George. Our sympathies go out to her many friends who
considered her family.
Be A Year Round Friend and Supporter of SHJM
It’s that time of year when the days get colder and a time when many SHJM parishioners
have active plans. The migration of summer visitors, people heading to warmer climes for
the winter, vacations, and travels all diminish the numbers of those who are able to worship
here each week. But please remember that our parish itself is here year round and we never
take a break from service and ministry. Last year we began a program of planned,
automated giving, called First Fruits. It was a huge success and well over 10% of our
supporters participate in this way. It enabled our parish to maintain a more consistent year
round income. Automated giving can help insure that our parish remains strongly
supported. So here are some ways you can do this:
First Fruits: The easiest, and best if you are technologically challenged is to enroll in First
Fruits. All you need to do is give us a void check and fill out a Frist Fruits Form. You can
get one on our website, at the rectory, or at the back of church. First Fruits transfers a
contribution either weekly or monthly from your checking account to the church.
Online Bill Pay: Chances are your bank already had a online check writing service called
Bill Pay. If you have online access to your checking account you can set it up to write a
regular check to SHJM. Just visit your online banking site and set it
up for the contribution you desire. Remember to include your
Envelope Number
Pay Pal: Pay pal is another way you can make regular
contributions. Soon it will also be a way that you can contribute
using Credit Cards. Check our website and check back here for
more information.
Sacred Hearts Singles

Good Food Friends and
Conversation
Sacred Heart Singles is not a match group and it is not a lonely hearts club. It is
an opportunity for mature singles to get together with nothing more on the
agenda than some good food, good conversation and a good talk. Prix Fixe
Dinner is $35 per person at the Plaza Café and includes a complimentary glass
of wine. Our speaker for the evening is Fr. Mike. Reservations cam be made

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
Because of your commitment, our Diocese is able to support critical charitable, educational and
spiritual ministries which bring the light of the Lord to more than 600,000 people each year,
including new initiatives that truly highlight what we can only do with your support.
We are continually developing programs for our young people who are so important for the future
vitality of our Church.
On College Campuses across Long Island, a new program was recently created called the Newman
Connection. Its purpose is to give high school students the ability to locate a Catholic presence on
their new college campuses even before leaving home for college. Working with high schools and
parishes - in its first year more than 2,000 students connected through this innovative program.
Our Vocation Office works closely with pastors, high school and college chaplains, sports and youth
groups, teachers and families to reach out to young men who are discerning a call to serve as Priests
in our Diocese. Throughout 2016 these many efforts included a monthly Diocesan Holy Hour for
Vocations, which more than 600 young people regularly attended.
Our Office of Faith Formation continues to develop religious education programs and training to
enhance their work with local parishes and their catechetical leaders to better serve the more than
100,000 youngsters from the first grade through the time they receive the Sacrament of
Confirmation.
These are just some of the programs that you make possible and we are so deeply grateful for your
extraordinary sacrifices to support the work of our Church. There is still so much more we can
accomplish together, and I ask you to join with me in making a gift to the 2017 Catholic Ministries
Appeal, and in welcoming our new Bishop, Most Reverend John Barres to our wonderful
community.

44th Annual March for Life
The 44th Annual March for Life will be Friday, January 27th. A bus from our area will go to
Washington DC for the one day trip to lobby for life. Mass at St. Rosalie’s in Hampton Bays will be
at 4:15 a.m. with buses leaving immediately after the Mass and proceeding to Immaculate Conception

The Diocese of Rockville Centre provides both information and support services in regard to
the Life issues, particularly in regard to crisis pregnancy, when abortion is being considered

Reflections On the Gospel
January 8, 2017
Sunday is the celebraƟon of the Epiphany, also known as LiƩle Christmas. On this day we remember
the arrival of three wise men from afar at the manger of the infant Jesus. We understand these
three kings, if such they were, to represent us in all our diversity of race and naƟonality, faith and
class. Jesus came for all, and all may be drawn to him. We recall the symbolic giŌs these magi bring,
recognizing Jesus as Son of God, King, and Savior. We witness God’s protecƟon of this vulnerable
baby in the warning the wise men receive not to inform Herod of Jesus’s locaƟon. There is so much
that this simple story teaches us of God’s openness to all, God’s generosity, and God’s loving care.
May we be as open to God’s epiphany (manifestaƟon) in one another, and may we be as generous
and caring.

Adorarlo” –¿Han pensado porque llegaron los magos a
adorar a Jesús? Es porque estos hombres sabios
estaban muy atentos a las señales en el cielo y vieron la
estrella, la señal de que había nacido el Mesías.
Nosotros también podemos estar atentos a las señales
que Dios nos envía. Quizás será una persona que
necesita ayuda, o la sonrisa de una ancianita, o una
bendición inesperada. Cuando nuestros corazones
están atentos a las señales que Dios nos dé, podremos
responder con amor y fe, regalos aún más valiosos que
el oro, incienso y mirra que los magos dieron a Cristo.
La descripción de los “magos de oriente” también nos
enseña otra verdad importante. Su viaje desde tierras
lejanas simboliza que la buena noticia de Cristo es para
todos los pueblos. Hoy, en un ambiente político de
animosidad al inmigrante es importante mantenernos
firmes en recordar las enseñanzas de nuestra fe que
todos somos creados en la imagen de Dios y somos
hermanos y hermanas en Cristo el Señor. El amor del
Niño Jesús debe ser la estrella que nos guie hoy.
El Quinto Encuentro Nacional de Pastoral Hisapano
- Ya estamos por comenzar las reuniones en grupos
pequeños y todos están invitados a participar. Habrá
cinco reuniones, y el fruto de ese compartir ayudará a
nuestra iglesia en responder mejor a los hispanos/
latinos en el nivel parroquial, diocesano y nacional, y
potenciará a los hispanos/ latinos a ser discípulos
misioneros.
No pierden la oportunidad de participar en este
proceso. Hable con su grupo o ministerio parroquial.
También habrá oportunidades de participar para los que
¡Conozcan sus Derechos! – Muchos están nerviosos
debido a los cambios políticos. Queremos invitarles a
una charla en español sobre sus derechos con la
ponente Victoria Daza de “Jobs with Justice,” el

Preparación Pre Matrimonial – Para casarse por la

P. Esteban o P. Jesús. El curso pre-matrimonial se da
por seis domingos, de las 9 AM al mediodía
comenzando el primer domingo de octubre o de
febrero.

Curso: Para bautizar a su hijo, es necesario que los

Padrinos: Debe escoger a los padrinos conscientes de
los requisitos. Los padrinos tienen que ser católicos
bautizados, confirmados y que han hecho su Primera
Comunión y deben poder comulgar. El padrino
(madrina) debe ser un(a) soltero(a) o debe ser casado
por la iglesia.

Apostolado Hispano, necesitan una carta de su párroco
dándonos permiso para bautizar su hijo.

Curso Pre-Bautismal
El curso se da el último domingo de cada mes a la 1:30

5:00 PM en la iglesia en East Hampton. Este mes el
curso será el domingo, 29 de enero. Favor de llevar la
copia del acta de nacimiento del niño. Bautizos en
Southampton serán el el 1º de enero, el 5 de febrero, el 5
de marzo y el 2 de abril, el 7 de mayo y el 4 de junio.
