In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on
June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag
of the United States, which happened on that day in
1777 by resolution of the Second Continental
Congress. The United States Army also celebrates
the Army Birthday on this date; Congress adopted "the
American continental army" after reaching a consensus position
in the Committee of the Whole on June 14, 1775. In 1916,
President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that
officially established June 14 as Flag Day; in August 1949,
National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.
Flag Day is not an official federal holiday. Title 36 of the
United States Code, Subtitle I, Part A, CHAPTER 1, § 110 is
the official statute on Flag Day; however, it is at the President's
discretion to officially proclaim the observance. On June 14,
1937, Pennsylvania became the first U.S. state to celebrate Flag
Day as a state holiday, beginning in the town of Rennerdale.

CURRENT THREATS TO
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
In his speech to the European Parliament in November 2014,
Pope Francis asked, “In the end, what kind of dignity is there
without the possibility of freely expressing one’s thought or
professing one’s religious faith?” Pope Francis has repeatedly
emphasized that it is incomprehensible and alarming that
people continue to suffer discrimination, restriction of their
rights and even persecution for publicly professing their faith.
Undeniably, “Serious violations inflicted on this basic right
[religious freedom] are causes of serious concern,” and all
people must work to defend “the intangible dignity of the
human person against every attack.” Yet, religious liberty
continues to be under threat, even in the United States:
DHHS mandate for sterilization, contraception, and abortioninducing drugs. The mandate of the Department of Health and
Human Services forces religious institutions to facilitate and/or
fund a product contrary to their own moral teaching. Further,
the federal government tries to define which religious
institutions are “religious enough” to merit protection of their
religious liberty.
Catholic foster care and adoption services. Boston, San
Francisco, the District of Columbia, and the State of Illinois
have driven local Catholic Charities out of the business of
providing adoption or foster care services—by revoking their
licenses, by ending their government contracts, or both—
because those Charities refused to place children with same-sex
couples or unmarried opposite-sex couples who cohabit.
State immigration laws. Several states have passed laws that
forbid what they deem as “harboring” of undocumented
immigrants—and what the Church deems Christian charity
and pastoral care to these immigrants.
Discrimination against small church congregations. New
York City adopted a policy that barred the Bronx Household
of Faith and other churches from renting public schools on
weekends for worship services, even though nonreligious
groups could rent the same schools for many other uses.
Discrimination against Catholic humanitarian services.
After years of excellent performance by the U.S. Conference
of Catholic Bishops’ Migration and Refugee Services (MRS)
in administering contract services for victims of human trafficking, the federal government changed its contract specifications to require MRS to provide or refer for contraceptive and
abortion services in violation of Catholic teaching.
Christian students on campus. In its over-100-year history, the
University of California Hastings College of Law has
denied student organization status to only one group, the
Christian Legal Society, because it required its leaders to be
Christian and to abstain from sexual activity outside of
marriage.
In his Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis
clearly outlined the importance of preserving a robust sense of
religious freedom. He argued that a “healthy pluralism…does
not entail privatizing religions in an attempt to reduce them to
the quiet obscurity of the individual's conscience or to relegate
them to the enclosed precincts of churches, synagogues or
mosques.” Therefore, it is essential that a proper sense of religious pluralism be fostered and defended not just in the United
States, but throughout the world.

your loved ones by donating flowers for the Altar,

LOST & FOUND. Are you missing keys? Or perhaps a
Mass book? Your child’s toy or shoe? A rosary? If so,
please stop by the Parish Office or call to see if your item
may be in the Lost and Found box. All unclaimed items,
including car/house keys, will be disposed of June 30th.
Are you missing a favorite casserole dish, serving platter,
or utensil? If you brought food to one of the many events
recently held at Holy Family, perhaps your missing item is
in the Social Hall or Family Life Center kitchen. Please
take a moment the next time you are in the church and
look in both locations. You never know - it might be there.
All unclaimed items will be donated to Albemarle Hopeline on June 30th.

with the Holy Family community.
As part of our observance of the Fortnight, you are invited to
join with Bishop Burbidge for the celebration of Mass on
Thursday, June 25 at 6:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in

Help Protect International Religious Freedom by Passing
H.R. 1150 Christians and Religious Minorities
Suffering in Middle East and Elsewhere
Pope Francis has expressed increasing concern for the suffering
of many Christians and others who are persecuted around the
world simply because of their faith. The brutality inflicted on
religious minorities has reached staggering proportions, causing
them to flee the violence in places like Syria, Iraq, Pakistan,
Nigeria, and Myanmar (Burma) with little more than the clothes
on their backs. Millions of Syrians and Iraqis are displaced
internally and in surrounding countries, trying to survive in
cramped quarters, uncertain of their future.
As a way to address this suffering, the USCCB strongly
supports passage of The Frank Wolf International Religious
Freedom Act of 2015, H.R. 1150, that updates the 1998
International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA) and provides more
tools for the U.S. government to support the protection of
religious minorities.
Two vases are located in the Holy Family Memorial
Garden so that individuals may place “live” flowers
in them in memory of their loved ones. Please do not
use plastic flowers. Thank you.
Did you enjoy the concert benefit featuring
“Women of Praise,” a women’s choir composed of
Albemarle area residents, which was held at Holy
Family in January? They will be returning on
Sunday, July 19th, for a repeat performance. All proceeds will
be donated to the Teri Crowe Fund. Teri is a long-time
parishioner at Holy Family and needs a heart transplant. She
must raise $25,000 before she can be put on a heart transplant
list. Information as it is received will be published in future
bulletins.
ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR THE BULLETIN should be
submitted in writing or by e-mail to the parish office by
4 p.m. on Friday at least 2 weeks prior to the event or as
soon as possible. Send e-mails to holyfamily@embarq
mail.com (Attn: Bulletin Editor). Thank you.
MINISTERIO HISPANO- JUNIO 14, 2015
construye juntos, no solos.
