A veces la persona y la hora person meet. Sometimes, when a task or mission is set upon our shoulders, we know we must meet our responsibilities and we are ready. These are heady and invigorating times. The first reading and the Gospel proclamation today are intimate glimpses of a commencement of a challenging future in which a sense of gravity prevails. The first reading is from the mysterious Servant Songs from the book of Isaiah. The person is steadfast and brave. His courage and bravery are not located in his stout heart, but in God. We are reminded, “The Lord God opens my ear that I may hear” (Isaiah 50:4), so the servant understands the mission. And twice, “The Lord God is my help” (50:7, 9), so that the servant can endure the coming struggle. Let us pray that we come to know who Jesus is and how he is calling us to enter into his ministry to bring life to our world and to understand what we need to die to, so that God’s reign might become more present in our world. Father Serra was an 18th century Franciscan friar who left a very comfortable life in Spain to come to the New World and share his love the Gospel. He was so dedicated that he walked thousands of miles across what is now California and Mexico to spread the faith, establishing nine missions along the way. Junipero Serra is the patron of Serra International and since 1935 been our founding priest. Serrans come from all walks of life, but are united by a common mission: to promote, encourage and affirm vocations to the ministerial priesthood and consecrated religious life. Gracious Father, We thank you for the exemplary life, missionary zeal and loving kindness of your servant, Father Junipero Serra, who entrusted his ministry to the Virgin of Guadalupe, and stood firm in the defense of the native peoples. Following his example, may we also look to Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Star of the New Evangelization, as we proclaim the Gospel in our own day. We ask you, Lord, to bless the Church with abundant vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life, inspiring many to follow Father Serra as humble laborers in your vineyard. Through this intercession, grant that we may see the face of your Son, Jesus, in all those we meet, especially the poor, the marginalized and those who suffer. Amen. Cindy Gross, Chair of Parish Pastoral Council Stewardship Reflections ~ 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time: September 6, 2015 Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” (Mark 8:34) When we truly believe that all we have is a gift from God, then we must be willing to give up some things so that we can share our blessings as God intended. Living a stewardship lifestyle means not only being responsible for our own life, but the lives of others as well.
