Alumnus Wins Prestigious National Award
T
HE SMITHSONIAN’S NATIONAL PORTRAIT
GALLERY (NPG) has recognized
Westmont alumnus Joel Daniel Phillips
(2011) for his submission to the Outwin
Boochever Portrait Competition, the most
prestigious portrait competition in the United
States. Phillip’s portrait,
Eugene #4, a 6-foot-tall
charcoal and graphite
on paper, is one of seven
chosen to win a prize at the
opening awards on March
10th. More than 2,500 artists
submitted portraits for the
triennial, juried exhibition,
which awards $25,000 to the
Joel Daniel
Phillips
first-prize winner as well
as a commission to create a
portrait of a living individual for the museum’s
permanent collection.
Eugene #4 will be included in the exhibition
at the Smithsonian’s NPG from March 12th,
through January 8th, 2017. It will then travel
to four host museums across the country from
February 2017 through August 2018.

L
A GALERÍA NACIONAL DE RETRATOS DEL SMITHSONIAN (NPG) ha reconocido al
ex alumno de Westmont Joel Daniel Phillips (2011) por su participación en la
Competencia del retrato Outwin Boochever, la competición de retratos más
prestigiosa de los Estados Unidos. El retrato por Phillip, Eugene #4, un dibujo
hecho con carbón y grafito sobre papel que mide 6 pies de altura, es uno de los siete
elegidos para ganar un premio en la ceremonia de apertura que tendrán lugar el 10 de
marzo. Más de 2,500 artistas presentaron retratos para la trienal, exposición con jurado,
que otorga $25,000 para el ganador del primer premio así como una comisión para crear
un retrato de un individuo vivo para la colección permanente del museo.
Eugene #4 será incluido en la exhibición de la Galería Nacional de Retratos del
Smithsonian desde el 12 de marzo, a través del 8 de enero, 2017. Después, viajará a

Magia Natural: Impresiones en papel salado en América del Norte, Keith F. Davis
dará un discurso sobre uno de los primeros inventos de la fotografía: la impresión
en papel salado el jueves, 28 de enero, desde las 5:30 hasta las 7:30pm en el
Auditorio Mary Craig del Museo de Arte de Santa Bárbara.
La investigación de la relación entre las identidades nacionales y la fotografía, Davis

College (SBCC) prepares to bid farewell
to its longtime faculty member, Atkinson Gallery
will feature his work in a retrospective exhibition,

to show my work,” shared Inks, a 3D Design
and Sculpture Professor, retiring at the end of
