The Readings Today: In today’s Gospel (Luke 1:1-4, 4:14-21) Jesus comes to Nazareth and reveals
who he is and what his mission is in the synagogue of his own hometown. Paul’s letter to the
Corinthians (1 Cor 12:12-30) tells us that we are all united in this work, no matter who we are or
what our role might be. Jesus’ mission is ours because we are members of his one body. Do we
know and embrace the role that is uniquely ours? Could we stand up and identify our own part in
Jesus’ work? In the first reading (Neh 8:2-4a, 5-6, 8-10) the people respond to Ezra’s proclamation
of the law with a great Amen. Let us rejoice at the glad tidings Jesus brings to us and respond also:
AMEN.

Faith Formation Day
No one deserves faith and no one can buy it;
faith is a gift that changes one's life and allows people
to recognize Jesus as the son of God with the power to
forgive sins, Pope Francis said at his morning Mass.
Praise is the proof that one truly has faith and
believes "that Jesus Christ is God in my life," the pope
said Jan. 15 during the Mass in the chapel of the
Domus Sanctae Marthae.
Jesus, he said, was sent "to save us from our
sins, to save us and bring us to the father. He was sent
for that, to give his life for our salvation." However,
the pope added that is "the most difficult point to
understand."
The Gospel for that day, Mark 2: 1-12,
recounted Jesus' healing of a paralytic in Capernaum
and the tension that arose among those who followed
Jesus when he told the ailing man that his sins were

Many in the crowd
had their hearts "open to faith,"
but there were others, the pope
said, who accepted Jesus as a

The day's Gospel
reading, the pope continued, is
a call for Christians to ask
themselves how strong their
faith in Jesus is and to discern
if their faith changes their lives
and brings them closer to God.
Noting the crowd's
reaction after Jesus' healing of
the paralytic, Pope Francis said
that is through praise that
people prove their faith and
belief that Jesus was sent to
forgive sins.

“I
would like to highlight
several things from today’s gospel
reading:
Luke is writing a very long
letter to a friend by the name of
Theophilus:
“after
investigating
everything accurately anew, to write it
down in an orderly sequence for you...”
Imagine receiving this long letter to
meditate... Theophilus was indeed the
first person to read the Gospel of Luke. I
believe that it certainly deepened his
faith, gave him food for the journey.
The first thing that Luke does in
his letter is to introduce Theophilus to
Jesus, saying that He came to fulfill what
the Prophet Isaiah had prophesied: “to
bring glad tidings to the poor, to
proclaim liberty to captives and
recovery of sight to the blind, to let
the oppressed go free, and to
proclaim a year acceptable to the
Lord.” Luke will demonstrate to
Theophilus that Jesus did all this
and in abundance.
It is very important to
note that the Gospel of Luke is no
longer being read by Theophilus
but by us, the followers of Christ.
The letter is no longer recounting
the life of Jesus but now has
become the Gospel of Luke and
thus an invitation for each of us to
make a commitment. Luke’s

purpose is “so that we may realize the
certainty of Jesus’ teachings.” The Word
of God must lead each and every one of
us to the knowledge of and an encounter
with Christ. As it was for Theophilus
then, it is also our nourishment now.
In line with Pope Francis, and
with the Holy Year of Mercy, Jesus’
initial ministry is with the poor. Notice
that He is not addressing the sins of the
people, but their oppressions and
sufferings. Jesus knows that He is
“anointed by the Spirit of God” and that
God is a God that loves and cares about
the suffering of the poor and vulnerable.
It will be the Spirit who will push him to
surrender his entire life in order to bring
relief, healing and forgiveness. This is
the God that Jesus announced with His
words and with His life. A God He
invited us to always trust and to abandon
ourselves to Him as His children.
Pope Francis, in his apostolic
exhortation Evangelii Gaudium #48
shares: “If the whole Church takes up
this missionary impulse, she has to go
forth to everyone without exception. But
to whom should she go first? When we
read the Gospel we find a clear
indication: not so much our friends and
wealthy neighbors, but above all the
poor and the sick, those who are usually
despised and overlooked, ‘those who
cannot repay you’ (Lk 14:14). There can
be no room for doubt or for explanations
which weaken so clear a message. Today
and always, the poor are the privileged
recipients of the Gospel, and the fact that
it is freely preached to them is a sign of
the kingdom that Jesus came to
establish. We have to state, without
mincing words, that there is an
inseparable bond between our
faith and the poor. May we never
abandon them.”

PARENTS:
This week at Edge, the youth learned about why we
profess that the Church is Apostolic. In the Creed,
which we profess every Sunday, we proclaim that the
Church is One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic. We
learned that the Church is Apostolic in three unique
ways. First, the Church is founded upon the prayer
and teaching of the apostles. Second, the Church
hands on the teachings that were given by Christ Jesus
through the pope, bishops, and priests. Third, the
Church’s task is to make disciples of all nations. Here
are some questions to ask your son or daughter this
week:
• What do we mean when we say that the Church is
Apostolic?
• What are some things that we, as a family, are doing
to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ?
• What are some ways that we, as a family, can start to
help spread the love of Christ in the world?

Praying in Thanksgiving
These past Saturdays, January 16 and 23rd, the children in
our Faith Formation programs participated in the Sacrament of
Reconciliation for the first time. 144 children from our Elementary
and Middle School Programs were blessed with this Sacrament. They
are still participating in the program in
preparation for their First Holy Communion
in April.
Please keep the children and their
families in your prayers. In this Holy Year
of Mercy may they, and our RCIA
participants, feel the never ending love and
mercy of God as it transforms their lives.

JUBILEE OF MERCY
MERCIFUL LIKE THE FATHER
No saint is
the Scriptures and awaited the Messiah. As
The Conversion studied

a Pharisee he even believed in the resurrection of

the dead. Yet, somehow his heart was closed to
no sinner
Christ the Lord.
If there was hope
for Saul, there is hope for
all. That is a large
measure of the message
Paul
sees
in
his
conversion. Saints like to call themselves the
greatest of all sinners. Paul’s claim to the title is
unusually strong, however. He was, in fact, once a
blasphemer and a persecutor and an arrogant man
(1Tm 1:13). Yet Paul also explains that he received
mercy because he acted ignorantly in unbelief. This
is quite remarkable.
Paul’s unbelief was in a real way his
gravest sin, the foundation of all the others. Paul
without a future.
The ignorance of unbelief, however, is a
darkness God alone can illumine. And the Lord
spread his merciful light when he blinded Paul with
his radiant and living presence. Jesus’ mercy to
Paul, in other words, came as the ultimate personal
encounter. Paul’s knowledge of the Christ was no
longer a matter of mere human learning—in the
end more ignorance than knowledge. Mercy came
as the voice and vision of the one risen from the
dead.
By our baptism we have all
been consecrated on the path
towards sainthood.

The Lord is “merciful”: this word evokes an attitude of tenderness as that of
a mother in dealing with her child. In fact, the Hebrew term used by the
Bible makes one think of the insides or even the maternal womb.
Therefore, the image it suggests is that of a God that is moved and
becomes tender for us as a mother when she takes her child in her arms,
desirous only of loving, protecting, and helping, ready to give everything,
even herself. This is the image that this term suggests. A love, therefore,
that can be described as “visceral” in the good sense.

Pro-Life...
Women’s Fellowship:
(Continued from page 2)
“Abortion itself, despite the endorsement of our highest legal
tribunal and many political and cultural elites, is as controversial as
ever,” the cardinal said. “Most Americans oppose a policy allowing
legal abortion for virtually any reason – though many still do not realize
that this is what the Supreme Court gave us.” Most Americans want to
protect unborn children later in pregnancy, most want limits and
regulations on abortion, and most want to bar taxpayer funding for
abortion. The cardinal noted that despite this, some are reluctant to
adopt the pro-life mantle.
“Yet many who support important goals of the pro-life
movement do not identify as ‘pro-life,’ a fact which should lead us to
examine how we present our pro-life vision to others.”
Cardinal Dolan said most Americans are “open to hearing a
message of reverence for life,” and so pro-life advocates “must always
strive to be better messengers.” “A cause that teaches the inexpressibly
great value of each and every human being cannot show disdain or
disrespect for any fellow human being,” he explained. “We should
celebrate human freedom, always reminding others that this freedom is
ours so we can freely choose the good – and that to enjoy this freedom,
each of us must first of all be allowed to live.”
The cardinal said it is “wrenching” to mark the anniversary of
legalized abortion so soon after Christmas. Citing the Church’s Year of
Mercy, Cardinal Dolan said that God’s love is infinite. He added: “this
same love is a source of unbounded mercy and forgiveness for all who
have fallen short of God's plans for us.” In the cardinal’s view, there is
an opportunity for pro-life advocates to reach most Americans. “They
do not see the unborn child as an illness or a tumor. They are repelled
when they see the callousness of the abortion industry, as in the recent
undercover videos of Planned Parenthood officials calmly discussing the
harvesting of body parts,” he said.
“They do not want to be pushed into actively promoting and
paying for abortion. They do not want doctors and nurses who are
sensitive to the value of life at its most vulnerable to be driven from the
healing professions”. “I invite all who are concerned about the tragedy
of abortion to recommit themselves to this vision of life and love, a
vision that excludes no one,” he said.

Home Visitation / Peer Counseling Ministry
A reminder that we have a Home Visitation/Peer
Counseling Ministry available to you and your family. The
goal of this ministry is to bring God's mercy and hope to
those going through difficult transitions and losses. We
strive to bring joy and support to those who may be alone a
lot or grieving some loss. It is important that they
know Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish cares about them
and prays for them.
Please help us reach those who might benefit from this
ministry by calling me. There are cards in the vestibule
with my phone number and e-mail. It is important, too, that
we all pray for each other and especially for those who are
ill and house bound.
