April 5, 2015 Page 3 Now shine on us your brightest ray. The Great 50 Days of the Easter season have now begun! For the coming 50 days we will celebrate Easter. The celebration of Easter will continue until the Feast of Pentecost (May 24th). On the Feast of Pentecost we will celebrate the many blessings that have been showered upon our parish in our many different ministries. On Pentecost we will also celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation and First Eucharist for the adults who have been meeting each month to prepare for this celebration. During the Great 50 Days of Easter the children who have been preparing to celebrate their First Eucharist will celebrate their First Eucharist and our young people who have been preparing for the celebration of the sacrament of Confirmation will be confirmed. “It is an unusual word that is not native to the English or even the Latin liturgical vocabulary; the word Alleluia. As a matter of fact, it sounds less like a meaningful word than the babbling of a child, and when it is sung with many notes for the final vowel, this impression becomes even stronger. “Alleluia” does, of course, have a meaning. It is a Hebrew word, and down the centuries, the church has brought it with her, untranslated (like Amen), as a product of Jewish soil from which she herself sprang and a reminder of her earliest days. The word is a cry of jubilation meaning ‘Praise the Lord,’ and occurs frequently in the psalms. But the translation does not explain why the church chose and retained this word from the Hebrew language of prayer in order to express her Easter jubilation, even though in later centuries her own children did not understand the meaning. I think the church meant to say; ‘In the presence of this mystery that we celebrate on Easter, the mystery of our redemption, our usual intelligible vocabulary is inadequate; when faced with the superabundant mercy of God we can only stammer in amazement like children. That is how it is with us Christians: As we gaze at the Sun that has risen high over the darkness and cold of our Good Friday, all the well-chosen words are useless. We can only stammer out our Alleluia of wonder and jubilation.” (Balthasar Fischer) “O splendor of the Father’s light That makes our daylight lucid, bright; O Light of light and sun of day, True Sun, break out on earth and shine In radiance with your light divine; By dazzling of your Spirit’s might, Oh, give our jaded senses light. The Father sends his Son, our Lord, To be his bright and shining Word; Come, Lord, ride out your gleaming course And be our dawn, our light’s true source.” (Ambrose, Fourth century) Administration FAITH DIRECT: Please consider helping Our Lady of Fatima Parish to save some money by switching to FAITH DIRECT. It makes sure that your weekly sacrificial support of the parish is here no matter what the weather is like or if you have to be away for the weekend. It helps simplify your giving and also cuts down our use of paper envelopes. You can sign up online by going to www.faithdirect.net. Our parish code is NY303. You can also sign up by mailing an enrollment form which is available in the parish office. THE CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL: Please help our parish reach its goal. This year our goal is $39,600. Our hope is that as many parishioners as possible participate in this annual appeal which helps thousands of people on Long Island who turn to the diocese and local parishes for assistance. Your financial support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal helps not only our diocese but also our very own parish provide vital pastoral care programs to those who are in need. The STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE will meet on TUESDAY, APRIL 7th, at 7:30 PM in the SACRISTY. The COMMUNICATION COMMITTEE will meet on THURSDAY, APRIL 9th, at 7:00 PM in the PARISH OFFICE. The PASTORAL COUNCIL will meet on Wednesday APRIL 15th, at 7:30 PM in the RECTORY. April 5, 2015 PARISH TRUSTEES will meet on SATURDAY, APRIL 18th, at 10:00 AM in the PARISH OFFICE. ANNUAL PARISH RAFFLE: The drawing for the winner of our ANNUAL PARISH RAFFLE will take place at our annual brunch at the Port Washington Yacht Club on Sunday, May 17th. The prize is $10,000 (provided we sell all 300 chances). Each chance is $100 and only 300 chances will be sold. Information about the raffle has been mailed to our parishioners. If, by mistake, you haven’t received the information in the mail, please call the Parish Office. Please support this annual parish fund raiser. PARISH FUND RAISING APPEAL: During the next coming weeks you will receive a letter in the mail describing the work of our threefold appeal: the Restoration of our Church, Faith Formation and Parish Social Ministry. Please take time to read the letter and consider how you can help us reach our goal so that we can bring our dreams for our parish to a reality. We have been very blessed for these 65 years. With the financial support of all our parishioners we will be able to continue to proclaim the gospel message through our Faith Formation programs and our Parish Social Ministry programs as well as to restore our beautiful church. Community Life Dear Friends, The Lord is Risen! Let us rejoice and be glad! Alleluia! Alleluia! The great feast of Easter is upon us. The days of Lent and Holy Week have led us to this great feast of the Resurrection. Several weeks ago, when I was starting to prepare for Easter, I read a commentary in CELEBRATION about the feast of Easter. It opened with story that was told by the author Karl Knudsen that caught my attention and my imagination. It goes something like this: “Years ago an old municipal lamplighter, engaged in putting out the street lamps one by one, was met by a reporter who asked him if he ever grew Page 4 weary of his work? After all, it was a lonely job and the night was cold and damp. ‘Never am I cheerless,’ said the old man, ‘for there is always a light ahead of me to lead me on.’ ‘But what do you have to cheer you, when you have put out the last light?’ asked the news writer. ‘Then comes the dawn,’ said the lamplighter.” The writer continues: “What if the same questions were put to Jesus? One light after another did he put out: the lamp of popular acclaim, the lamp of patriotic approval, the lamp of ecclesiastical conformity; all for the sake of God’s love, which burned in his heart and showed him the way. At last even the lamp of his life was to flicker out on a hill called Calvary. What then? We hear his voice: ‘Into your hands, I commend my spirit.’ And then came the dawn.” “Because all did not end at Calvary, because the cross was but a passage to everlasting life, we celebrate today the Christ who lives and by whom arising, a new day has dawned for all of humankind.” The scripture commentator continues: “In today’s first reading, the formerly fearful Peter proclaims the good news of Jesus’ death and resurrection, hoping to draw unto Jesus those who had not been willing to believe or be transformed by faith. Peter’s words reach across the centuries and invite us to renew our commitment to Jesus, the light of the world. Our belonging to Jesus precludes any hopelessness or pessimism; any hiding or wandering aimlessly in the dark. That kind of darkness has no place in the Christian heart.” “Paul, in today’s second reading from his Corinthians correspondence, challenges us to clean house. Get rid of malice and wickedness so as to make room for sincerity and truth. Christ, our light, will aid us in discerning what should go and what should stay. Christ will also strengthen our resolve and inspire in us an even greater passion to believe in the Gospel and live in accord with it.” “In today’s Gospel, we read the original ending of Mark, where the two Mary and Salome arrive at the tomb to anoint the body of Jesus. Theirs April 5, 2015 was a sad and difficult task, but their love for Jesus urged them on. Notice that they did not expect to find anything except the deceased Jesus. They had no idea that there could be an alternative.” Yet we proclaim on this Easter that there is indeed an alternative. We proclaim that the love of God has indeed conquered death and showered upon us the gift of eternal life! We, indeed, are called to become messengers of the Easter message. “We cannot be fearful and remain silent, for the reality of Jesus Risen compels us to witness with our lips and our lives.” Pope Francis has said: “Moved by Jesus’ example, we are to enter fully into the fabric of society, sharing the lives of all, listening to their concerns, helping them materially and spiritually in their needs, rejoicing with those who rejoice, weeping with those who weep; arm in arm with others, we are committed to building a new world. But we are so, not from a sense of obligation, not a burdensome duty, but as the result of a personal decision which brings joy and gives meaning to our lives.” (The Joy of the Gospel). And so on this Easter we resolve to be the light of the world, to be the presence of the Risen Lord. The Lord is Risen indeed! Alleluia! Alleluia! Outreach Parish Social Ministry FOOD PANTRY – Thank you to all those who have donated to Our Lady of Fatima Food Pantry. Please remember to check the expiration dates on all your donated items. Toiletries are always welcome! CaringHands Corner The rock was pulled aside and there was no one in the tomb. Everyone said “HE IS RISEN!” Where do we find him? Did we check the road to Emmaus? How about the river where we fish or the upper room? Remember when we gathered for our meal and He appeared to us in the locked room? Are we even looking for Him? How could we not…and then again, do we really care? Of course we do! We are people of faith. There is one place we haven’t looked. It is time to look into our hearts. He is with us 24-7 as they say today. He never left us. If we don’t see Him or feel Him, it is because we have moved away. Lent had brought us back to that place…the Resurrection. Jesus died on the cross for us. After 3 days he returns to us and resides in our hearts. What do we do now? We follow Him. He has called us to be His disciples. Our hearts are bursting with His love and it is time to act. Remember our Sick, Homebound, in Hospitals, Rehab and Hospice in your prayers. Start today Easter Sunday as they are waiting. “He is not here for He has risen.” (Matthew 5:6) Thinking of you at this time of year when the earth is coming alive again, blooming bright with new life. May your spirit rejoice and you heart be full on this glorious Easter Day. May Christ’s blessings be yours as you follow him every day of your life! Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Easter Love from all the staff of the CaringHands Card Ministry and CaringHands Prayer Chain. UN MENSAJE DE NUESTRO PARROCO Queridos amigos, El Señor ha resucitado! Gocémonos y alegrémonos! ¡Aleluya! ¡Aleluya! World, came so we could find our way to God... Jesus, the Lamb of God, died upon the cross so we could receive the Salvation of God. Jesus, the Bright and Morning Star, rose from the dead so we could live forever with God. "May the God of Hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit" (Romans 15:13) As we celebrate the glorious feast of Our Risen Lord, please know that you are helping us in bringing God's saving message to our elderly brothers and sisters.
