26 CASA Magazine – a voice of the PROGRESSIVE MAINSTREAM • www.CasaSB.com SBCC Foundation Campaign for Student Success to Raise Critical Funds for SBCC & its Students T HE ANNUAL FUNDRAISING, COMMUNITY PROMOTING EXTRAVAGANZA, the Campaign for Student Success launched this week on April 6th. The Campaign raises critical funds for SBCC and its students and is spearheaded by the SBCC Foundation. It will run for four weeks, ending May 1st. During this time, the Foundation is seeking broad community participation. For nearly 40 years, the SBCC Foundation has enhanced the educational experience for students attending Santa Barbara City College. The Foundation works in partnership with the college to secure resources for the highest priority needs of the school. With public funding only going so far, philanthropic dollars are needed to bridge the gap between what is funded and what is needed. Funds raised during the Campaign for Student Success ensure SBCC students, faculty members, and staff have access to the resources they need. “We are touched every day by those who have improved their lives and community in part due to their SBCC education. Santa Barbara City College graduates are the employees you hire, the colleagues you work with, the chefs in our local restaurants, and the nurses providing comfort and care in our hospitals,” shared SBCC Foundation CEO Geoff Green. “When donors give to the Campaign for Student Success, they are supporting all aspects of student achievement.” SBCC affords access to education for those wishing to obtain a degree, looking for an affordable option before transferring to a four- year university, wanting to develop a specific skill set that will propel them into a career, or continuing their learning through lifelong education. Through it all, the SBCC Foundation provides the college with necessary funding, serving as the vehicle through which donors can invest in accessible higher education for the Santa Barbara community. “The skills students develop at Santa Barbara City College, the interactions they have with faculty, staff, and each other, and the knowledge they acquire, all greatly influence their ability to achieve success,” said Campaign for Student Success Chair Robyn Freedman. “When you support SBCC Foundation’s Campaign for Student Success, you aid students in their academic endeavors, changing lives through education.” In recent years, funds raised have gone toward: Scholarships; Disabled student programs and services; Tutoring; Mathematics, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) resources; Continued Education/Center for Lifelong Learning; and Athletics. Donations can be made to the Campaign for Student Success: by sending a check payable to the SBCC Foundation to: SBCC Foundation, 721 Cliff Drive, Santa Barbara, CA 93109 or online at sbccfoundation. org. For more info, call 730-4401. The SBCC Foundation was established in 1976 to support Santa Barbara City College through sustained philanthropy. Last year, the Foundation gave more than $3.5 million in assistance to SBCC students, helping them prepare for careers, pursue lifelong learning goals, or transfer to four-year universities. Create A Career As An Artist @ The 5th Art Career Day Conference A PASSION FOR ART AND A DESIRE TO LEARN are all that are necessary to participate in Art Without Limits’ 5th Annual Art Career Day Conference (ACDC), a free event designed for people ages 13 to 25 years. Creative leaders in the community will gather at Santa Barbara City College - Fe Bland Forum on April 25th to share their stories and gems of information with all those hoping to live the creative life. More than a hundred aspiring artists have attended each conference from 2011 to 2014. Their backgrounds varied from having no formal training or experience to those well on their way to becoming established artists. Participants commented, “ACDC showed me that life is dynamic, and that you actually have a choice on what you want to do,” and “I really enjoyed hearing about how people found their Painting by Fabrice Tay, VADA at SBHS way to success first hand.” Many participants have returned to attend the conference the following year. It’s a chance to learn from and interact with professional artists and business experts. The goal of ACDC is to empower young artists to create viable careers in the arts with the help of guidance, knowledge and inspiration from established artists. Up to 100 attendees will engage with speakers, participate in round-table discussions, and enjoy performances by 2015 Teen Star, Sydney Shalhoob and the UCSB Freshman Dance Company. A complimentary lunch will be served. The conference fosters support for emerging artists from the local artistic community. Rod Lathim will be the ACDC Emcee this year. Nathalie Gensac of Youth Interactive will be the Keynote Speaker. Additional speakers include visual artist Kim Yasuda, photographer Sol Hill, and AWoL Executive Director Julie McLeod. Each will give presentations about their unique paths to becoming professional artists, and their particular insights on success. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions as they interact with our local artists. Round-table sessions will be held in music, dance, painting, acting, directing, poetry, prose, journalism, screenwriting, galleries, fashion photography, travel photography, architecture, sculpture, assemblage, ceramics, mosaics, graphic design, makeup, costume and fashion design, and animation. Attendees may participate in any three of these sessions. To present ACDC, Art Without Limits collaborates with the Santa Barbara Bowl, SB County Arts Commission, Dug Uyesaka, SB County Education Department, Rod Lathim, SBCC Theatre Department, SBHS Visual Arts & Design Academy, Carey Hobart, Performing Arts League, SB Teen Star, and many others. Adams, Special to CASA A KNOCKOUT EVENING FOR FILM FANS of an earlier generation of westerns, The Elmer Bernstein Memorial Film Series, Celebrating Distinguished Film Music, screened the 1960s swaggering western epic, The Magnificent Seven, at the Granada Theatre on March 30th. The concluding event for this season’s film music-focused series featured curator and Oscar Award winning songwriter/ composer and occasional actor Paul Williams who moderated onstage and insightfully engaged the noted composer Bruce Broughton with discussions of the influence of Elmer Bernstein’s score for Seven. Released at the outset of the 1960s, the Bernstein score for The Magnificent Seven 2 jumped off the screen. Both guests, Williams and Broughton, recognized that the symphonic background music was one of the first movie scores that cast a powerful spell both within the Hollywood picture-making industry as well as being embraced by the nation’s public at the time. Broughton drew attention to the influence that this particular score had, especially in western films that followed, including his own memorable and Oscarnominated score for Laurence Kasdan’s Silverado. The screening of The Magnificent Seven, which was broadcast on the Granada’s state-of-the-art rear projection system, displayed unmatched locations, shot in Durango, Cuernavaca, and Tepoztlán, Mexico by Director John Sturges. The film also featured towering performances from an ensemble cast including Yul Brynner - at the height of his powers - portraying the stoic leader of the posse of outcasts and drifters. The film also served as a breakout vehicle for future superstar Steve McQueen as Vin, and offered a spellbinding performance from Eli Wallach as the bandit-villain, Calvera. Comprising a main anthem, or leitmotif, the score represented a western journey of hope and resilience, echoing the energetic efforts of the heroic posse of gunfighters/ saviors, with melodic leitmotiv passages and tempos that, according to special guest Broughton, helped to energize the pace of the film. Within the suspenseful dramatic phrases, 3 Elmer Bernstein thoughtfully referenced Bartok’s second movement of the Concerto for Orchestra. The moving score for Seven was recognized by the America Film Institute as the eighth greatest American film score in a poll unveiled in 2005, the year after Bernstein’s passing in 2004. This delightful Elmer Bernstein Memorial Film Series series was sponsored by Montecito Bank and Trust, and the screening was sponsored by Sarah and Roger Chrisman, among others. The discussions with special guests and the full-stage screening of this studio-produced western was a rare opportunity to revisit and rediscover the interwoven music, and pay tribute to the important role that composers play in how we experience films of this scope and style.
