T
he arrival of springtime also
brings the start of baseball
season.
Little leaguers throughout the city prepare
to hear the crack of the bat and smell the scent
of fresh grass.
Since 1989, the Police Officer Michael
J. Buczek Little League has sought to
provide local youths something a little more
meaningful than just recreational fun.
“We hope to instill the values of fair play,
responsibility, commitment, respect and
teamwork, while reinforcing the dangers of
crime and drug use with our ballplayers,” said
league President Sgt. John Moynihan.
The league was formed 26 years ago to
honor the memory of Michael J. Buczek, an
NYPD officer killed in the line of duty on
October 18, 1988 in Washington Heights.

motto of ‘building major league citizens, one
game at a time’ and we take that commitment

Inwood very seriously,” said Moynihan.
“And we have a lot of fun doing it.”
The baseball league is open to boys and
girls ages 4 through 12, and holds its games
at the Michael John Buczek Ballfield, located
at Amsterdam and Fort George Avenue in
Highbridge Park.
Registration is now underway for the 2015
season, which begins on April 18 and runs
until June 28.
The mentoring by the police is intended to
create a strong bond between law enforcement
and the community, said Moynihan, and also
humanize police officers for local citizens.
“The league has worked to ‘put a face to
the uniform,’ and show that we are dads and
moms, brothers and sisters, and that we laugh
and play, too,” said Moynihan. “Children and
parents trust us to help them.”

aría Luna was over the
moon.
The Democratic District leader was in
attendance this past Wed., Mar. 18th at the
opening of District Attorney Cy Vance’s new
office in Northern Manhattan.
“It was my idea,” claimed Luna, who
reported that she had made a personal
request in 2009 of District Attorney
Vance that a satellite office be opened in
Washington Heights.
“The services are going to be helpful,”
said Luna.
Located at 530 West 166th Street, at the
Triangle Building, the office is intended
to serve a vital link between community
residents and the DA’s office. Staff
there will include bilingual members of
the Community Partnerships, Domestic
Violence, Immigrant Affairs, and Witness
Aid Services Units, and residents can make
appointments or simply stop in. Translation
services will also be offered.

Honing in on hip-hop
T
he history of hip-hop music and
culture, from its modest origins
on city streets through its evolution
into a worldwide phenomenon, is
the focus of an upcoming photo
exhibit at the Museum of the City
of New York.
“Hip-Hop Revolution: Photographs by
Janette Beckman, Joe Conzo, and Martha
Cooper,” will bring together the work of three
of the most acclaimed photographers of the
hip-hop scene, while documenting the birth of
a cultural movement, with its accompanying
music, dance, fashion and style.
Featuring more than 100 photographs taken
in New York City between 1977 and 1990,
“Hip-Hop Revolution” will be on display
between April 1 and September 18, 2015.
The exhibition is a follow-up to the City
Museum’s 2014 exhibition on graffiti art,
“City as Canvas.”
“Hip-hop is yet another incredibly vibrant
example of how the world has been shaped
by what started in New York,” said Susan
Henshaw Jones, Ronay Menschel Director of
the Museum of the City of New York. “You
can see this dynamic and influential music and
culture come to life in this exhibition through
the powerful photographs of three wonderful
photographers.”
Legendary performers documented in the
photographs include Afrika Bambaataa, Run
DMC, Rock Steady Crew, Beastie Boys, Kool
Herc and Cold Crush Brothers.
“We’re seeing in these photographs the
foundation of what many people consider a
way of life today,” said Sean Corcoran, the
museum’s Curator of Prints and Photographs.
“These photographers were part of
propagating the culture to ever expanding
audiences,” added Corcoran. “This is really a
New York story.”
Designed by Marissa Martonyi, the
exhibition will include listening stations for
the music of performers documented in the
photos, as well as flyers about early hip-hop
performances, newspaper clippings, books
and other artifacts of the era.
The museum will also offer a variety of
public programs in conjunction with the
exhibition.

Restoring the
faith in justice

his week, Judge William
Garnett of the State Supreme
Court ruled against my office’s
request to unseal the grand jury
minutes in the Eric Garner case.
While I am disappointed in his
decision, I will not give up on
the pursuit of justice and am
appealing this decision.
We have all seen the videos of what
happened on the day Eric Garner was
killed. I was saddened, disheartened, and
confused that such concrete evidence was
not enough to return an indictment and lead
to a fair trial.
I strongly believe that the public has the
right to know what happened in these grand
jury proceedings, which is why I have been
in court fighting to unseal the minutes.
The unfortunate case of Eric Garner has
been one of the most public news stories
of the past year and the public deserves an
explanation. We are not interested in the
identities of the jurors or witnesses, but
instead, in the facts of the case.

There are questions of this case that must
be answered.
What was said during the proceedings
that discredited the video evidence of
a banned police tactic: the chokehold?
What evidence was produced? What
was the explanation of law? Why did the
proceedings take nine weeks? How many

I am appealing this decision because not
only does the public have a right to know

reforming our entire criminal justice
system to one that reflects the values of our
modern society.
To restore the public’s faith in our
criminal justice system we must shine light
on a system that has operated in secrecy.
The public must know and trust that
our criminal justice system is objective
and that the process is balanced, fair, and
impartial.

NYPD announces
community policing pilot
T
he New York Police Department
(NYPD) has announced that it
will test a pilot program designed
to better familiarize officers with
the neighborhoods they patrol.
The pilot will take place at four precincts in
the city, including two in Northern Manhattan.

At the 33rd and 34th Precincts, serving
Washington Heights and Inwood, as well as
two precincts in The Rockaways, selected
officers will not be expected to respond
to 911 calls for about one-third of their
shift, said Susan Herman, NYPD’s Deputy
Commissioner for collaborative policing.
Instead, they will use that time to meet
residents, attend local meetings and otherwise
acquaint themselves with an assigned area, in
an attempt to foster improved relations with
the community.
The pilot program, announced at a City
Council hearing on March 3, is viewed
by many as an effort to reduce tensions
between New Yorkers and the NYPD — a
relationship that has been strained in recent
years, especially in communities of color, due
to the use of tactics such as stop-and-frisk
and “broken windows” policing, as well as
the death of Eric Garner, who died during a
confrontation with cops in 2014.
Each precinct in the program will be
divided into neighborhood sectors, with cops
working the same part of the neighborhood
consistently.

The program will benefit communities by
“allowing our cops to have ownership of a
neighborhood, working in partnerships with
everyone there,” according to NYPD Deputy
Chief Terrence Monahan.
“The guys who ride in the radio cars are
going to be in the same sectors every single
day,” said Monahan.
At the City Council hearing, Herman said
that the pilot program will “likely begin next
month after the officers receive smartphones
and tablets along with the necessary training.”
However, no official start date has been set,

volleyball team from Inwood’s
PS/MS 278, were ready to take
their shot for a place in the

The Tigers, composed of sixth
through eighth grade students, had
enjoyed an impressive debut in the
competitive city-wide middle school
volleyball league.
“It was our first year in the competitive
league, but we have had a developmental
program for 9 years,” explained Coach and
Dean of Students, Charles Reilly, who also
coaches the school’s basketball team.
There are nine divisions throughout the
city, with a total of 40 teams. After winning
their division – Manhattan 1 – with a record
of 5 and 0, the Tigers went on to win their two
playoff games in Manhattan and became the
borough champions.

W
hat do a failed soap opera
star, her co-dependent
teenage son, his neurotic twelvestepping girlfriend and the pot
dealer across the hall have in
common?
In the new off-Broadway play Leave Me
Green, they are all characters bonded by
loss.
Written by Hamilton Heights resident
Lisi DeHaas, the play is a probing look at
the concept of family, set in New York City.
Leave Me Green reveals how a lesbian
woman and her straight teenage son deal
with grief in the wake of her partner’s
death.
“All of the characters have lost someone
close to them,” said DeHaas. “The play
explores what it means to redefine the
notion of family.”
“The story just came pouring out of
me,” says playwright Lisi DeHaas.
Set in 2009, when gay marriage was not yet
legal in New York, the story also addresses
the challenges of building a queer community
while raising straight kids.
“Especially in New York City, where so
many folks are originally from somewhere
else, what people consider to be family is
often non-traditional,” said DeHaas. “Those
boundaries of family are constantly being
rebuilt and redefined.”
Though Leave Me Green deals with serious
subject matter, DeHaas said there is a healthy
dose of humor in the script.
“Even when you’re dealing with
something really sad, it’s important to
have humor so you can handle it better,” she
remarked.
Cast members include Charlotte Booker,
who has appeared on Broadway, and also
in films such as Inside Llewyn Davis and
Stuart Bliss. The play also stars Oscar A.L.
Cabrera, Michael Gaines and Emma Meltzer,
and is directed by Jay Stull, a Brooklyn-based
playwright and director.
As for the show’s title, DeHaas said
it refers to the desire to “stay fresh, stay
innocent and open to the possibility of new
things,” a sensibility that the writer has
brought to her own career.

New cancer documentary touted at Columbia

“I
t’s the most complex detective
story ever told,” filmmaker
Ken Burns said of his new film
Cancer: The Emperor of All
Maladies.
The prolific documentarian was speaking
about his latest project, which details the
history and science of cancer, and is based
on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Dr.
Siddhartha Mukherjee, an oncologist and
assistant professor of medicine at Columbia
University Medical Center.
The book was adapted by Burns into a sixhour, PBS documentary that will air in three
parts, shown nightly at 9 p.m. from March 30
to April 1.
“Since we declared the war against cancer,
we have needed a report card to show where we
are, and where we are going,” said Mukherjee.
“That’s what we’ve tried to do with this film.”

ptown foodies have reason
to raise a glass — the
official Washington Heights and
Inwood Restaurant Week, dubbed
#WHIN & DINE, will soon be
back.
At participating restaurants on Mondays
through Fridays between April 6 and April
24, diners can sample the best eats
northern Manhattan has to offer at
discounted prices.
Focusing on eateries between
155th Street and 220th Street,
the event offers three-course prix
fixe dinners for $26.95, excluding
beverages, gratuities and taxes.
“This program is the perfect way to
showcase the culinary treasures that
exist uptown,” said Ariel Ferreira,
Chief Executive Officer and founder
of local marketing firm UpStep,
which organizes #WHIN & DINE.
The restaurant week debuted
three years ago under the moniker
“Explora,” but for its second year the name
was switched to #WHIN & DINE to provide
better branding to the neighborhoods it
served, explained Ferreira.
And the event has continued to grow
since its inception.
“The first year, we had 14 restaurants
participating, and this year we have 26,”
said Ferreira. “We keep adding quite a few
new places.”
This trend is indicative of the wave of
new restaurants and bars that have cropped
up within Inwood and Washington Heights
in recent years.
“This program is the perfect way
to showcase the culinary treasures
that exist uptown,” said Ferreira.
“It’s nice that locals have so many options
for food now,” remarked Ferreira. “Residents
always tell me that they discovered an eatery
through the restaurant week that they didn’t
even know existed before.”
By visiting www.whindine.com, diners can
view menus for all restaurants taking part in
the event.
A special kickoff for #WHIN & DINE will
be held on April 6 at Inwood’s Viva Kitchen
and Bar.
Last year’s kickoff, held at District 12, drew
more than 200 attendees, said Ferreira.
“The restaurant week is exciting for people
who live in Washington Heights and Inwood,
but it also attracts people uptown who don’t
normally come here, and they discover how
wonderful this area is,” commented Ferreira.
“It’s great for businesses and great for the
community.”
#WHIN & DINE, the Washington

distrito, Cy Vance, en el norte de Manhattan.
“Fue mi idea”, afirmó Luna, quien informó que

oficina satélite del fiscal del condado Vance se
abriera en Washington Heights.

The first set of the semi-finals was a close
one. After alternating the lead by one or two
points back and forth, the Tigers won it 25 to
23. But the second set proved to be a different
story, as the Bronx team dominated, winning
25 to 8.
The Creston Academy players never lost
momentum afterwards, and the Tigers lost the
final set 25 to 14.
It was a hard blow, as it was the Tigers’
very first loss of the season.
“After the second period, they didn’t have
the same energy,” commented eighth grader
Sybele Delacruz.
“Tough loss,” said Coach Reilly as he
escorted the tearful Tigers out of the school,
and into a bus that would bring them home.
“They played very well,” said school
administrator Jacquelene Gutierrez. “You win
or you lose. You need to learn how to lose.”
A short week later, the players’ spirits
had lifted – and they looked back on their
accomplishments with pride.
“I’ve been a part of Mr. Reilly’s volleyball
team for three years and I would say it’s been
the greatest three years ever,” said eighth
grader and player Ariel Moscat. “He has done
many, many great things with our school
sports. The volleyball team was one of his
greatest accomplishments.”
Next year, Moscat will bring all her talents
to LaGuardia High School, which has been
her “dream school” since she was in the
5th grade. Moreover, her friend and fellow
volleyball teammate Jurnee Sims will also
join her at LaGuardia.

ew York City’s long-term plan
is updated every four years,
and Mayor Bill de Blasio will offer
the newest version, PlaNYC, on
Earth Day, April 22.
The idea, according to a
statement from de Blasio, is “to
make sure that we’re building
toward a future that’s reliant,
sustainable, and makes sense for
the lives of all New Yorkers.”
To help inform the plan, the
Mayor is soliciting input from
the city’s residents. New Yorkers
will be able to participate in what
the city says is a “first-ever” web
survey to answer questions about issues that
they think are most pressing for the future
of the city. What’s more, the survey can be
filled out in one of seven different languages
(English, Spanish, Chinese, Kreyòl, Italian,
Korean and Russian).
The survey will be open until the end of the
month, but Amy Spitalnick, Director of Public
Affairs at the Mayor’s Office of Management

honored on league uniforms — Rafael
Ramos, WenJian Liu and Michael Williams
— all NYPD officers who were killed during
the past several months.
Officer Buczek, who was 24 years old
at the time of his 1988 death, was killed on
161st and Broadway after he and his partner
chased two men fleeing from a drug robbery.
One of the men turned and shot Buczek, who
later died from his wounds.
“Michael was killed protecting the good people
of Washington Heights,” said Mary Jo Buczek,
Officer Buczek’s sister and Vice President of the
Buczek Foundation. “He loved this community
and its residents, and he loved baseball.”
In addition to running the little league, the
Buczek Foundation funds several student
scholarships.
“We’ve also provided Thanksgiving and
Christmas meals for needy and elderly
Washington Heights residents and have done
winter coat drives, book drives and more,”
added Mary Jo Buczek.

Since returning to New York City about
nine years ago, DeHaas has focused on
writing plays.
“I come from an experimental
background of theater and dance, but I
always wanted to write a more traditional
play structure,” she said.
While DeHaas fully developed Leave
Me Green over the course of about two
years, the bulk of it was conceived during
an intensive weekend writing workshop.
“The story just came pouring out of me,”
she said.
DeHaas, who lives with
her partner and son, said
the sense of community she
feels in Hamilton Heights
helped inspire her play.
“It’s a family-oriented
neighborhood,
and
they’ve been wonderfully
embracing of two women
and their son moving in,”
she explained.
DeHaas
said
that
Leave Me Green was also
motivated by experiences
in her personal life, after
she experienced a series of
deaths in her family.
“The story itself was
me imagining my worst
fears onstage,” remarked
DeHaas.
For DeHaas, writing the
script was therapeutic in coping with her own
grief, and a way to present an encouraging
story for the audience.
“There’s a positive and hopeful message
in the play,” said DeHaas. “It shows that it’s
never too late to make changes in your life.”
Leave Me Green will be performed
from March 26 until April 11 at The Gym
at Judson, 243 Thompson Street, between
Washington Square South and West 3rd
Street in Manhattan. All shows begin at 8p.m.

Un cafecito con ACDP
Director Yerany Marasco has been hosting cafecitos at ACDP’s Audubon Youth
Program. Her cafecitos are open to all parents and caretakers of children
between the ages of 5 to 18. Yerany wanted to learn about the needs of
local families in an informal, open setting.
The discussions help ACDP’s staff prioritize what kinds of resources are
needed for parents.
“We want to be able to empower parents and provide them with knowledge
to advocate for themselves and their children,” said Marasco, whose own
experience as an immigrant from the Dominican Republic helps her relate to
her clients’ needs.
It is also a networking opportunity for the parents in the community.
So far, the group has hosted workshops on housing, higher education, and
parents’ rights – and there are more to come.
“We wanted to be more creative and get involved in a different way.”
