He can do it at Cannes

N
elson Peña is going global.
The Bronx resident’s latest film,
Trabajo, was recently nominated for official
selection to the Short Film Corner of the
2015 Cannes International Film Festival in
France.
Trabajo tells the story of an 11-year-old
deaf Dominican boy who searches for a job
because he strongly feels the need to help his
financially struggling single mother make
ends meet.
In one scene, the mother tells the boy that
he is the “man of the house” after his father
abandoned them.
“He takes it seriously,” explained Peña.
“He thinks he needs to support both his mom
and younger brother.”
In the film, the boy is unable to obtain
work because he is not of legal age for
employment.
“The story is really about the tremendous
effort he makes,” commented Peña.
Peña said he created his 14-minute film
because he was inspired to tell a story
through the eyes of someone who had
difficulty communicating.
“I like giving voice to someone who
normally doesn’t have one.”
He was intrigued by the concept of
making a deaf character the leading role in
the project.
“If you look at films and television, usually

Film Festival in April, and can be seen by
New Yorkers this June at the Dominican
Film Festival.
Though Peña said the Cannes short film
segment is a non-competitive section, with
no awards distributed to the filmmakers, he
regarded the prestige of showing his film on
such a grand stage as a priceless return.
“The exposure of having your film shown
at such a legendary festival is tremendous,”
he remarked.
Peña said he is flattered by the early praise
his film has been receiving.
Locally, City Councilmember Ydanis
Rodriguez, a longtime supporter of the
arts and of independent film, offered his
congratulations.
“I am very proud to see Trabajo be
accepted into the renowned Cannes Film
Festival,” said Rodríguez in a statement.
“The film beautifully portrays the struggles
of hard working families while highlighting
our community’s heritage.”

Trabajo cuenta la historia de un niño sordo
dominicano de 11 años de edad, el cual busca
un trabajo porque siente la firme necesidad
de ayudar a su madre soltera, quien tiene
problemas financieros para llegar a fin de mes.
En una escena, la madre le dice al niño que
él es el “hombre de la casa” después de que su
padre los abandona.
“Él lo toma muy en serio”, explicó Peña. “Cree
que tiene que mantener tanto a su madre como
a su hermano menor”.
En la película, el niño no puede conseguir
un empleo porque no tiene la edad legal para
trabajar.
“La historia trata sobre el tremendo esfuerzo
que hace”, comentó Peña, quien dijo que creó su
película de 14 minutos porque estaba inspirado
para contar una historia a través de los ojos de
alguien con dificultades para comunicarse.
“Me gusta dar voz a quienes normalmente no
la tienen”.

Antes de Cannes en mayo, Trabajo tendrá
su estreno mundial en el Festival de Cine Latino
de Chicago en abril, y podrá ser vista por los
neoyorquinos este junio en el Festival de Cine
Dominicano.
Aunque Peña dijo que el segmento de
cortometrajes de Cannes es una sección no
competitiva, sin premios distribuidos a los
cineastas, considera como un retorno de valor
incalculable el prestigio de mostrar su película en
un gran escenario.
“Que tu película sea exhibida en un festival tan
legendario es algo tremendo”, comentó.
Peña dijo que se siente halagado por los
elogios que ha recibido su película.
A nivel local, Ydanis Rodríguez -concejal de
la ciudad y veterano partidario de las artes y del
cine independiente- ofreció sus felicitaciones.
“Estoy muy orgulloso de ver que Trabajo haya
sido aceptada en el famoso Festival de Cine de
Cannes”, dijo Rodríguez en un comunicado. “La
película retrata muy bien la lucha de las familias
trabajadoras, además de destacar la herencia de
nuestra comunidad”.
Peña es quizás mejor conocido como cineasta
por You Are Not Famous, una serie de
documentales cortos -filmados en su totalidad
con un iPhone- que retratan la vida de la gente
común.
“Puedes pensar que tienes la vida más
aburrida”, señaló Peña. “Pero en realidad todos
tienen algo que decir”.

Originario de la ciudad de Nueva York, Peña
ha vivido en Inwood, y se graduó de la escuela de
cine del City College de Nueva York.
“Siempre estuve interesado en las cosas
artísticas, cuando era niño dibujaba y pintaba. No
fue sino hasta después en la vida que empecé a
interesarme en el cine”, explicó.
Escribió el guión de Trabajo hace casi una
década, pero comenzó a producir la película en
serio recientemente, rodándola durante tres días
en agosto de 2014.
El elenco de Trabajo cuenta con nombres
notables como Laura Gómez, una actriz local con
papeles en Orange is the New Black y Law
& Order, así como Mateo Gómez, un
actor veterano que ha aparecido en varias
películas importantes, incluyendo Che: Part
One y The Bone Collector.
Pero Peña insiste en que la verdadera estrella
de Trabajo es Jafrar Paulino, de once años de

CB12 held its first official Small Business Forum.

Jason Miller, Chair of CB 12 Business
Development Committee, spoke from the
auditorium at the Isabella Geriatric Center,
where the board’s first official Small Business
Forum was underway in earnest.
The forum held on Tues., Mar. 3rd was an
effort to provide entrepreneurs in Northern
Manhattan with access to resources and
information that would help them operate
successful businesses.
Present were representatives from city
agencies, loan specialists, as well as current
and prospective small business owners.
The event’s first panel focused on city
regulations for small businesses. Panelists
from the Department of Labor, the Department
of Health, the State Liquor Authority and
the Department of Consumer Affairs shared
insights on regulations and practices.
Many of those in attendance were owners
of bars and restaurants.
“If you are near a church or a school you
cannot sell hard liquor within 200 feet,”
explained Michael Jones, Deputy Chief
Executive Officer at the New York State
Liquor Authority.
Rud Morales, owner of lounge and
restaurant Negro Claro, listened intently.
“It is always good to get new information,
especially because city regulations are always
changing,” said Morales, whose establishment
is currently undergoing renovations and
will resume operations within the next three
months.
She expressed concerns about reducing
hours of operation, as has been proposed by
the Community Board.
“The nightlife community is important to
us,” said Morales.
She is opposed to the initiative to close
local establishments at 2 a.m., as opposed to
the current closing time of 4 a.m. She said
that the earlier time seemed at odds with the
spirit of the city.

norte de Manhattan- acceso a los recursos e
información que les ayude a operar negocios
exitosos.
Estuvieron presentes representantes
de agencias de la ciudad, especialistas en
préstamos, así como propietarios de pequeños
negocios actuales y potenciales.
El primer panel del evento se centró en las

t’s good to be home,” said
Tony Marx, President and
CEO of the New York City Public
Library (NYPL).
Shortly after arriving on Fri., Mar. 5th
to NYPL’s Inwood branch, Marx quickly
settled in. Born and raised in Manhattan’s
northernmost neighborhood, the native son
had connections to spare.

“This is where my mother learned to use a
computer,” he remarked, proud to note that,
at 84 years of age, she is a regular NYPL
volunteer.
But Marx’s visit was not merely a trip
down memory lane.
He had traveled from the NYPL’s
central offices on 42nd Street to meet with
Councilmember Julissa Ferreras, the Finance
Committee Chair of the City Council, for a
first-hand look at the library’s budgetary needs.
The tour followed a Council hearing on
February 24th on the ten-year Capital Plan for
the city’s three library
systems. The libraries
have submitted $1.4
billion in capital
requests.
“We need to support
the library and make
sure these facilities

acceptable,”
said Ferreras, who
represents the 21st

Queens. “This is

Councilmember to chair the Finance
Committee. In her role, Ferreras oversees
the city’s $75.3 billion budget, as well as the
Department of Finance, Banking Commission,
Tax Commission, Comptroller’s Office,
Department of Design and Construction and
Independent Budget Office.
Both visitors agreed that the need to invest
in public libraries was a priority.
“The Finance Committee will be fighting
hard this budget season to secure [the funding]
our library systems need for repairs, so they
can match their exceptional programs with
quality space,” said Ferreras.
The Councilmember has also spoken out
strongly in support of the libraries and has
noted that the administration has tasked
the system with new responsibilities such
as IDNYC, the municipal identification
program.
Yet, in preliminary documents, the city has
proposed a $10 million operating cut.

“E
s bueno estar en casa”, dijo Tony
Marx, presidente y director general
de la Biblioteca Pública de la ciudad de
Nueva York (NYPL por sus siglas en
inglés).
Poco después de llegar a la sucursal de
Inwood de la NYPL el viernes 5 de marzo,
Marx se instaló rápidamente. Nacido y criado
en el Norte de Manhattan, el hijo nativo tiene
conexiones de sobra.
“Aquí es donde mi madre aprendió a usar una
computadora”, comentó orgulloso al señalar que
a los 84 años de edad, ella es voluntaria habitual

Pero la visita de Marx no fue simplemente un
viaje al pasado.

Comisión Bancaria, la Comisión de Impuestos, la
Oficina del Contralor, el Departamento de Diseño
y Construcción y la Oficina Independiente de
Presupuesto.
Ambos visitantes coincidieron en que la
necesidad de invertir en las bibliotecas públicas

“It’s important for people to understand
that if they are eligible for colon cancer
screening, they shouldn’t procrastinate.
That’s why my colleagues and I are
promoting the ‘80 percent by 2018’
campaign initiated by the National
Colorectal Cancer Roundtable. The ultimate
goal is to have 80 percent of the eligible
population screened for colon cancer by
2018,” says Dr. Felice Schnoll-Sussman,
a gastroenterologist and director of The
Jay Monahan Center for Gastrointestinal
Health at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.

“Educational awareness is key to fighting
this disease. As more people get screened
on time, we can work to reduce the overall
rate of colon cancer cases in this country.
With proper screening, colon cancer can
not only be detected early, but often can be
prevented from developing.”
Drs. Schnoll-Sussman and Kiran provide
six facts that everyone should know to help
reduce their risk of colon cancer:
• Get screened.
Screening can detect early cancers, as
well as polyps before they become cancer.
Men and women should begin screening at
age 50.
• Screening for colorectal cancer is
effective.
The death rate from colorectal cancer
has been falling in recent years, largely due
to the adoption of widespread screening.

more importantly—can find polyps that
could become cancer if left undiscovered.
• Screening is done when
you feel well. Colon polyps and early
cancers often cause no
symptoms. You could
have a precancerous

This is why screening—
before
symptoms
occur—is essential.
• Know your risk factors.
Certain risk factors may require
screening to be performed at a younger
age. These include inflammatory bowel
disease, a personal or family history of
colon cancer, large colon polyps or certain
hereditary conditions that can cause colon
cancer, such as Lynch syndrome or familial
adenomatous polyposis (FAP). Ask your
doctor about when to start screening if you
have any of these risk factors.
• Get moving.
There are a few lifestyle changes you can
make to reduce your risk, such as quitting

Cuomo Courts Disaster

T
he education policy component
of the so-called “Opportunity
Agenda, Uptown” enunciated by
Governor Cuomo, in of all places,
the Malcom X/Shabazz Center,
is only an opportunity to court
disaster.
The Governor calls for ‘teacher evaluation,”
with merit pay bonuses of $ 20,000 and firing
of the “bad ones”.
Such a program has been proven ineffective
wherever it has been tried. It will have
harmful consequences for the schools in our
district which contend with the students who
have greatest needs for close attention.
That requires a much greater investment of
money than this Governor has been willing to
provide.
The Alliance For Quality Education just
released a report detailing the tens of millions
of dollars our district is being shortchanged,
as are other districts throughout the city and
state, totaling more than $ 2 billion dollars
this year alone.
Success at a school arises from collaboration
between teachers, and the mentorship of new
teachers by veteran experienced ones. All of them
know that their success one year is dependent
upon the success of others in years prior.

in Newark and Chicago, they

privately operated charter schools, to which
the students with the greatest needs will be
precluded.
The Governor wants to “challenge”
us.
In return, we issue the following

A
s New Yorkers spend their
winter bundling up under
layers of clothing, a local comedypop musical duo is looking to take
it off.
The Skivvies present bare-bones versions
of famous pop hits, as well as quirky original
songs, primarily using cello, ukulele,
glockenspiel and melodica.
Not only do they strip down the music, the
group literally strips down to their underwear
to perform.
By lampooning chart hits and concocting
humorous originals, The Skivvies are
reminiscent of “Weird Al” Yankovic — if he
performed in his boxers.
The duo is comprised of Nick Cearley and
Lauren Molina, two longtime friends and
theater veterans: Harlem resident Cearley has
appeared in All Shook Up and Pageant while
Molina has been seen in Rock of Ages and
Sweeney Todd.
The Skivvies are preparing for their latest
original show — Splashdance! — which will
be held on March 16 in Manhattan.
“We’ll be parodying Flashdance, and other
famous things,” said Molina. “There will be
some water involved, so things could get a
little messy.”
The Skivvies became YouTube sensations
in 2012 with their crafty version of Rihanna’s
“We Found Love.”
“Prior to shooting the
video, Molina was trying
to figure out what to wear,
and had just her bra on,
and I said, ‘Why don’t you
just wear that?’” Cearley
explained. “We stripped
down the music, but that
took it to a whole new
level.”
Subsequent videos also
garnered attention, and the
pair soon began playing
live concerts.
The group said that
performing
in
their
underwear presents a
unique set of concerns.
“I’d say you have
to keep yourself wellgroomed,”
remarked
Molina.
“Luckily, the venues
we’ve played in haven’t been that cold,” joked
Cearley. “But I’ll say that we’d definitely
never play outside in the winter.”
Considering the duo’s state of undress,
there’s no room for body-image hangups, said
Molina.
“Playing in your underwear, you have to let
go of any self-consciousness that you have,”
she explained. “The music actually makes me
forget that I’m not wearing much.”
Splashdance! will be performed at
42West, a 14,000-square-foot multipurpose
performance space. Since opening about a
year ago, the site has hosted appearances by
Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Meryl Streep,

Young Docs on deck

F
or young children, the sight of
a doctor’s white coat can be
enough to make them shiver.
The association with pediatricians often
involve being poked and prodded, or worse
yet, getting a needle.
Medical students from Columbia University
Medical Center (CUMC) are aiming to reduce
such anxiety while also educating kids about
what it’s like to be a doctor.
Through a program titled Young Docs,
members of CUMC’s Black and Latino Student
Organization (BALSO) visit local classrooms
throughout Washington Heights, Inwood and
Harlem to expose school-age children to the
medical field and encourage them to become
leaders within their communities.
Another goal is to minimize the natural fear
that children have of medical professionals,
explained Shaliesha Hinds, a BALSO cocoordinator.
“At that point in their lives, all kids know
about doctors is that they give shots,” said
Hinds. “We teach them about what doctors
really do and how they help the community.”
First-graders at P.S. 314 Muscota New
School in Inwood received a Young Docs
visit on Fri., Mar. 6th.
Youngsters gazed in amazement as an army
of 18 lab coat-clad med students filed into
their classrooms.
“My pediatrician was my role model,” “I learned
what the heart looks like,” said Kimora.

a co-coordinator.
Hinds questioned the curious kids, “What
do you think a doctor does?”
“Doctors help you get medicine,” offered
one student.
“They take babies out of people,”
commented another.
The Young Docs set up various interactive
stations designed to teach students about the
skeletal, circulatory and digestive systems, as
well as nerves and reflexes.
The children giggled as they toyed
with a life-sized skeleton’s limbs and paid
rapt attention while listening to their own
heartbeats with stethoscopes.
The Young Docs also had students pour
orange juice onto crackers in plastic bags, to
help demonstrate how acids break down food
in the digestive tract.
The children, who playfully tapped on
knees with a reflex hammer and were asked
to draw the chambers of the heart, seemed
enamored with their newfound med-school
buddies.
“I learned what the heart looks like inside
my body,” remarked first-grader Kimora. “I
had no idea.”
“I got blood drawn once and it was really
scary,” said her classmate Lily. “But I don’t
think I’ll be as scared anymore.”
Muscota Parent Coordinator Cynthia
Masson said that collaborating with CUMC’s
Young Docs was a natural extension of the
school’s mission.
“We’re always looking for ways to partner
with the community,” explained Masson.

source of inspiration for countless
filmmakers, artists and everyday

Directly after the news of the death of
legendary filmmaker Albert Maysles, who
passed away at his home on Thurs., Mar. 5th,
the family released the statement above.
Maysles, who founded an independent
cinema house in Northern Manhattan, was,
together with his late brother David, a pioneer
of the Direct Cinema genre. They were
among the first to make nonfiction feature
films, where the drama of life unfolds as is
without scripts, sets, interviews or narration.

Defeating DOMA
The Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) will host the program “Defeating
DOMA: The Changing Nature of Equality under the US Constitution.” The
event will feature Roberta Kaplan, who successfully argued before the US
Supreme Court the landmark United States v. Windsor marriage equality
case that struck down a key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act
(DOMA). Dozens of courts throughout the US have relied explicitly on the
Windsor case to accord gay couples equal rights under the law. This program
will explore that groundbreaking ruling in anticipation of the upcoming
US Supreme Court decision on whether all 50 states must allow same-sex
marriage. Ms. Kaplan will discuss how and why such dramatic progress for
marriage equality was made so quickly; what shifted at the level of courts
and judges, within individuals, and within our nation; what role changing religious understandings and ethical
perceptions played in this profound legal revolution; and what potential legal arguments and strategy are
involved in the cases currently before the Supreme Court. Ms Kaplan will also explore the historical significance
of the Court’s potential decision. Marc Gary, executive vice chancellor and chief operating officer of JTS, as well
as former general counsel at Fidelity Investments and BellSouth Corporation, will moderate the discussion.

New FREE Youth Music Program
Created in Partnership with Grammy-Award Winning Arturo O’Farrill The NYC Mission Society has announced a new music program for middle and high school students
to be led by Grammy Award-winner Arturo O’Farrill.
GRIOT (Global Rhythms in Our Tribe), a collaboration between the New York City Mission Society and the Afro
Latin Jazz Alliance, will provide FREE musical instruction with academic enrichment.
Up to 40 young adults in grades 6 to 12 who express an interest in playing music will be able to participate in
the eight-week program, which will have orientation on March 11, 2015. Interview will take place 11 a.m. to
1 p.m. at the Minisink Townhouse (142nd and Malcolm X Blvd.) GRIOT will expose students to the history of global rhythms in Afro Latin culture and its place today in New
York City. It will help them acquire basic proficiency on a musical instrument; teach them basic musical theory

quien argumentó exitosamente ante la Corte Suprema de los E.U. el

stressed the importance of having a detailed
plan on the allocation of funds before
applying for a loan.
“It is one of the main factors in evaluating
an application,” said Nuñez, adding that
NYBDC’s average annual interest rates
ranges between 6 to 8 percent.
Another benefit to alternative lenders is
that they tend to finance smaller loans.
“We lend in very low scale,” said Gustavo
Pérez, Manager of Lending at Acción,
an organization that finances business
initiatives, even in instances in which the
borrower might lack a credit history.
There are resources available also for those
in the very early stages of developing a small
business.

Scorpion in the suds

N
o need for the chaser.
The Bronx Brewery was heating things
up, with a “Mexico in the Bronx” party at its
Port Morris headquarters.
The brewery held the event on Sat., Feb.
28th to introduce two new limited-edition
beers – flavored with mezcal and tequila.
“We had been looking to do something
unique like this,” brewery co-founder
Chris Gallant said of pairing his beer with
the fiery spirits. “We wanted to combine
some stronger-tasting liquor with our beers
through barrel-aging.”
For the past two years, the Bronx Brewery
has been aging batches of their beer inside
empty barrels from
Scorpion Mezcal and El
Jimador Tequila.
At the official tasting
party, Bronx Brewery
fans turned up in droves
to sample the results.
Guests noshed on free
tacos from El Atoradero
and listened to traditional
Mexican music from
the group Tepeyollotl,
while sipping cups of the
barrel-aged brews.
“I like margaritas, so
I found this interesting,”
remarked local resident
Ben Childs after trying
tequila-laced pale ale.
Wasnard Victor of
Harlem sampled the
mezcal beer. “It has
a unique flavor,” he
commented. “It’s very
different.”
Andres Lara, a native
of Mexico, was impressed.
“This seems like a very artisanal drink,”
said Lara, who has sampled numerous
mezcals from Mexico’s Oaxaca region.
“Just from the scent alone, you know it’s
something unique.”
Gallant said about 75 cases will be
produced of the limited-edition beers.
Scorpion Mezcal executive Robert Wolf
explained that it’s uncommon for breweries
to incorporate mezcal into beer, due to the
liquor’s powerful taste.
“But it seems like they did it the right way,”
Wolf said of the brewery.
“You’ve heard of people ordering a shot
and a beer — well, this is a shot in a beer,” he
remarked. “It’s perfect.”
The Scorpion Mezcal was paired with the
brewery’s Black Pale Ale, a seasonal offering
for winter that features dark chocolate and
roasted malt flavors.
“We really put a lot of thought into what
beer could stand up to the mezcal,” said
Gallant, “and the Black Pale Ale contains
a unique, bitterless malt that gives it a
smoothness.”
Bronx Pale Ale, which provides hoppy
notes with citrus
aroma, was aged in
the El Jimador tequila
barrels.
“The taste, along
within the beer, is not
something you would
normally think of
together,” commented
Port Morris resident
Ann Sullivan.
Bronx Pale Ale, the
company’s flagship
concoction, was until
recently the brewery’s
only beer that was
available year-round.
Now the brewery
also sells a Session
IPA, Rye Pale Ale
and Belgian Pale Ale
throughout the year,
in addition to several
seasonal
offerings,
said Gallant.
Founded
in
2011, Bronx Brewery moved into its
new headquarters on East 136th Street in
September 2014.
Previously, the company’s beer had been
produced completely outside of the borough
by brewing partners, said Gallant, as the
fledgling company did not have the money to
do it otherwise.

Bronx itself, which makes us proud,” he

In addition to brewing suds, the site
features a tasting room where the public can
sample beers. Visitors can also take tours
of the facility, and purchase kegs, cases and
four-packs of beer.
The brewery is currently renovating a large
back-patio area, slated to open this spring,
which will allow for outdoor seating and
events in the warmer weather.
“We’ll plan on having live music, comedy
shows and all kinds of stuff,” said Damian
Brown, another of the brewery’s co-founders.
“We’re also looking to partner with
food trucks or a local restaurant to provide
an expanded menu,” added Brown.
The facility recently added two new 40-gallon
tanks to increase production capacity — the
brewery will now be churning out 3,000 to
4,000 barrels per year, said Gallant.

breweries operated within Mott Haven and
the surrounding neighborhoods.
Gallant and Brown said they’re happy
to bring that tradition back to the area, and
also hope their business gives New Yorkers
a reason to make Port Morris a destination.
Neighborhood resident Childs can sense
that as a possibility. “There aren’t many places in New York
City where you can drink beer inside a
brewery, so this place is unique,” said
Childs.
“And this neighborhood is making great
strides and has some really good things
happening right now.”
The Bronx Brewery is located at 856

Scholarship Program
The Financial Service Centers of New York,
in conjunction with MoneyGram International,
is proud to present its 2015 college scholarship
program.
Each year, FSCNY awards cash grants to
outstanding high school seniors from public
schools in NYC’s five bor oughs and the
surrounding counties. Through the Scholarship
Program,

for young people - many of whom return to

the quality of life for all New Yorkers.
Students are selected based on academic
achievement and leadership skills they

Peña is perhaps best known as a filmmaker
for You Are Not Famous, a series of short
documentaries, filmed entirely on an iPhone,
that depict the lives of everyday people.
“You might think you have the most boring
life,” said Peña. “But really, everybody has
something to say.”
A New York City native, Peña has lived in
the Bronx since the age of eight and would
later graduate from The City College of New
York’s film school.
“I was always interested in artistic things,
and always drawing and painting as a child,
but it wasn’t until later in life I that became
intrigued by film,” said Peña.
He wrote the script for Trabajo nearly a
decade ago, but only began producing the
film in earnest more recently, shooting it over
three days in August 2014.
The cast of Trabajo features notable names
such as Laura Gómez, a local actress with
roles in Orange is the New Black and Law
& Order, as well as Mateo Gómez, a veteran
actor who has appeared in several major
films, including Che: Part One and The Bone
Collector.
But Peña insisted that the real star of Trabajo
is 11-year-old Jafrar Paulino, a Bronx resident
who had no previous acting experience.
Paulino’s real-life cousin, Christian Geréz,
was cast as the main character’s younger
brother.
Peña met the two boys somewhat
accidentally, after witnessing them playing
basketball behind their home with a group of
friends.
“I thought their chemistry was amazing,”
said Peña. “There was something there, and I
just knew they were the ones for the film.”

The director praised the effort by Paulino,
who had to learn American Sign Language for
the role.
“He really carried the film,” said Peña. “It
was impressive considering he had never acted
before and he couldn’t speak in the movie.”
For his next project, Peña hopes to complete
a feature-length film, and plans to scope out
potential screenplays while in Europe for
Cannes.
He revealed his hope that the film be highly
regarded by those in the hard-of-hearing
community.
“I hope that they embrace my film,” said
Peña. “I did it with nothing but respect and
plenty of passion.”

he National September
11 Memorial and Museum
has announced it will receive a
$750,000 grant from The Andrew
W. Mellon Foundation to support
education and public programs.
The grant will primarily fund a new project
engaging humanities scholars to work with
the 9/11 Memorial Museum to explore the
ongoing impact of the attacks and build an
intellectual community across the institution’s
core programs.
“This generous grant will make visiting
the Museum an even more powerful learning
experience and increase understanding of
how the attacks have shaped our world,” 9/11
Memorial Chairman Michael R. Bloomberg
said.
“The generous support of the Andrew W.
Mellon Foundation enables the 9/11 Memorial
Museum to engage humanities scholars as a
core feature of our educational programming,”
Museum Director Alice M. Greenwald said.
“We are deeply grateful to the Foundation for
its endorsement of our vision and for helping
to ensure the integration of new scholarship
into our exhibitions and public programs.”
The Museum will select two postdoctoral
scholars for two-year residencies in the fall of
this year and in 2017, enabling them to pursue
research extending their own education and
offering them new opportunities for professional
development, which subsequently will heighten
the organization’s institutional development. The
postdoctoral fellows would work with a senior
scholar, whose two-year appointment would
also be supported by this grant.

“These events are important, so students
understand how much doctors help people.”
Muscota first-grade teachers Rebecca
Haas and Nancy Cashman, along with
science instructor Marissa Ayala, have
been providing students with basic health
information in the classroom.
“We’re always talking about healthy
bodies and the importance of nutrition and
physical activity,” said Haas. “These kids
are still young, but it’s nice for them to see
on a deeper level how the body functions
internally.”
The medical students said they hoped to
serve as role models for young people, while
inspiring kids to envision themselves as
future healthcare practitioners and scientists.
Hinds explained that encouraging minorities
to pursue medical and science careers is an
important component of BALSO, as Latinos
and Blacks continue to be underrepresented in
those fields.
Karina Somohano, a BALSO cocoordinator, said she knew at an early age that
she wanted a career in medicine.
“My pediatrician was my role model,” she
stated. “I was one of the few kids who liked
going to the doctor.”
Somohano, who was born in Cuba and
came to the United States at the age of three,
said she felt a kinship with her pediatrician.
“She was an Hispanic female, just like me,
so I could relate to her,” said Somohano. “I
wanted to be just like her when I grew up.”

escuela pública 314 Muscota New School, en
Inwood, recibieron la visita de Young Docs el
viernes 6 de marzo. Los pequeños miraron
con asombro a un ejército de 18 estudiantes de
medicina vistiendo batas de laboratorio mientras
entraban en sus aulas.
Hinds cuestionó a los curiosos niños: “¿Qué
creen que hace un médico?”.
“Los médicos te dan medicinas”, explicó uno
de los estudiantes.
“Sacan a los bebés de las personas”,
comentó otro.
Young Docs preparó varias estaciones
interactivas diseñadas para enseñar a los
estudiantes sobre los sistemas esquelético,
circulatorio y digestivo, así como sobre nervios
y reflejos.
Los niños se reían mientras jugaban con
las extremidades de un esqueleto de tamaño
natural y quedaron absortos cuando escucharon
sus latidos con estetoscopios.
Young Docs también hizo que los estudiantes
vertieran jugo de naranja sobre galletas en
bolsas de plástico para ayudar a demostrar
cómo los ácidos descomponen los alimentos en
el tracto digestivo.
Los niños, quienes juguetonamente golpearon
sus rodillas con un martillo de reflejos y
dibujaron las cámaras del corazón, parecían
enamorados de sus recién descubiertos amigos

were first-year students, except for Lianna
Valdez, who is in her fourth year at CUMC,
and a veteran of several school visits.
“I’ve always loved working with kids,”
said Valdes, who hopes to go into pediatric
medicine. “It’s wonderful to see their
excitement and enthusiasm.”

Joshua Stein. “It gives all med students a bit
of extra energy.”

parecían apreciar el evento tanto como los niños.
“Es divertido ver la capacidad de asombro que
estos niños tienen”, comentó el estudiante de
CUMC Joshua Stein.
“Les da a todos los estudiantes de medicina
un poco de energía extra”.

In the children’s section, Ferreras took a
moment to browse through the many books
in Spanish. She said she was happy to find
many titles that had African Americans and
Hispanics as main characters, a rare find when

she was growing up.
Nichols spoke about the updates needed at
the branch. She said that though the library
had undergone renovations 15 years ago,
more was needed.
“Some of the major components, like
the roof, windows, boiler, and the elevator
weren’t renovated,” said Nichols.
Moreover, she would seek to provide
extended hours of operations.
“For a working community, it is hard to get
here,” said Nichols. “We need to have more
hours so people that work can come later.”

The show features guest artists from stage
and screen, including Shannon Ford, James
Carpinello, Phillipa Soo, Ephraim Sykes and
Adam Kantor, and is enhanced by images
shown on a 30-foot LED wall.
Splashdance! marks the start of a Skivvies
residency at 42West, which will see the group
perform one show per month, each with a
different theme.
“We’re excited to be doing monthly shows
and we’ll keep doing it as long as people keep
coming,” said Cearley.
What The Skivvies might lack in onstage
attire, they make up for with wit and charm.
Clothing isn’t removed in a seductive or
suggestive manner — a “strip with no tease,”
as one theater critic remarked. “We don’t play into the sex aspect of it,”
said Cearley. “We focus on the music and
make sure our act is not just a gimmick.”
“We’ve had a lot of theater people tell us
that we’ve been inspiration to them,” said
Molina. “That’s the biggest compliment.”

otras cosas famosas”, dijo Molina. “Habrá un
poco de agua involucrada, así que las cosas

Los Skivvies se convirtieron en la
sensación de YouTube en el 2012 con su
versión ingeniosa de “We Found Love”, de
Rihanna.
Antes de rodar el video, Molina buscaba

explicó Cearley. “Desnudamos la música,
pero eso lo llevó a un nivel completamente
nuevo”.

Un cafecito con ACDP
Director Yerany Marasco has been hosting cafecitos at ACDP’s Audubon Youth
Program. Her cafecitos are open to all parents and caretakers of children
between the ages of 5 to 18. Yerany wanted to learn about the needs of
local families in an informal, open setting.
The discussions help ACDP’s staff prioritize what kinds of resources are
needed for parents.
“We want to be able to empower parents and provide them with knowledge
to advocate for themselves and their children,” said Marasco, whose own
experience as an immigrant from the Dominican Republic helps her relate to
her clients’ needs.
It is also a networking opportunity for the parents in the community.
So far, the group has hosted workshops on housing, higher education, and
parents’ rights – and there are more to come.
“We wanted to be more creative and get involved in a different way.”
