Community Action of Skagit County is looking for volunteers in its Adult
Education Program, formerly known as Skagit Literacy. Volunteers are
needed one evening per week at LaVenture Middle School to teach English
as a Second Language (ESL), and at the Community Action Volunteer
Center to tutor students who are studying for their High School
Equivalency Exam (GED®). A variety of positions are available, including
ESL Instructor, ESL Classroom Assistant, Children’s Literacy Assistant
and High School Equivalency (GED®) Tutor. Class dates are consistent
with the MVSD schedule. Training, curriculum and support are provided.

MEETINGS
CRONE MEETING “Crones” is a fun discussion group for older women. (It has nothing to do with
Crone’s Disease.) Traditionally women have three stages to their lives: maiden, mother, and crone (wise woman).
At Crones, we gather together to share memories, experiences, opinions, and wisdom on topics chosen by each
member in turn. We encourage equality, diversity, and personal empowerment. We meet at the Mount Vernon
Senior (Community) Center (phone 336-5757) on each 2nd & 4th (February 10th & 24th)Tuesday at 9:30AM.
We do not charge dues, and membership is informal. Call Kristine Kuhns at 424-1251 for more information.
OLD TIME FIDDLERS always meet the 2nd and 4th Fridays (February 13th & 27th) each month, 7pm,
public is welcome. If you play & would like to join, please, come play with the Old Time Fiddlers
SVWA Spinner’s Group will return to meeting here at the Senior Center on Monday, April
20th @ 9:30am-12:30pm. We are a group of spinners who meet monthly to chat and spin together. We are not a
class, but lots of experienced spinners mean that questions are answered and some guidance can be given. We are
open to anyone who would like to drop in with their own wheel to spin with us. For questions, contact Ann at

VALLEY MAD HATTERS We will be meeting at the Senior Center on February 10th @ 11am for lunch
& business meeting. We will meet at Applebees on February 15th @ 1pm for our 10th Birthday Lunch. We will
meet at the Senior Center on February 17th @ 10am to go to LaConner for lunch and then off to a the

CHAIR YOGA-Chair yoga is a safe gentle yoga style that is adapted for our changing bodies as we age.
Yoga is about the unified self of body, mind and spirit. We achieve that with breath work, poses and meditation.
"true yoga is not about the shape of your body, but about the shape of your life"-Aadil Palkhivala. Simme will
teach the chair yoga class on Wednesdays, at 11—Noon
COUPONING CLUB if you are interested in teaching how to use coupons effectively, please, contact
Kristl. Before you go shopping, please, stop by the office to pick up your free coupons for your next
shopping trip.
EXERCISE CLASS every Monday & Friday at 10am
FOOTCARE CLINICS will be Thursday February 12th & 26th. Appointments are required (check
with the office to make an appointment). Cost $20. Sorry NO WALK INS! Please, remember to bring a towel for
drying your feet.
MASSAGE BY Janine ** Janine is our massage therapist who gives FREE 15 minute massages every
Wednesday by appointment ONLY beginning at 10am with the last appointment is at NOON. Phone or come by
the office to make an appointment.
POOL-You are welcome to play a game anytime while the center is open. Please do not put drinks or
sit on the pool table & please remember to put the equipment away when finished...Enjoy a game today! Please

Northwest Flower and Garden Show
This trip on Friday, February 13, is sure to be a sell-out. The NW Flower and Garden Show has been heralding
the start of spring since 1989. Enthusiasts from around the Northwest flock to this annual celebration of color,
inspiration and horticultural education. Your gardening desires will blossom when you gaze at the spectacular
show gardens brimming with ideas. 300+ marketplace exhibitors offer everything you need to replenish your
green thumb. Or attend one of the numerous free horticulture seminars. No matter your style or needs, you’ll
find inspiration for outdoor living, edible gardening, sustainability and more. You will be dropped off right
outside the front doors.

Pompeii: The Exhibition at the Pacific Science Center
On Wednesday, February 18, experience Pompeii before and after the epic eruption 2,000 years ago. In the year
79, Pompeii vanished beneath thick layers of volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. This exhibit tells
the tale of the city, hidden from view and forgotten for centuries until its rediscovery over 250 years ago. Witness
the final moments of those entombed in ash – including the largest collection of body casts ever presented. In
addition, enjoy the amazing IMAX movie Greece: Secrets of the Past. There will be one last stop in Everett for a
delicious gelato treat.

Tours of Seattle Underground and Smith Tower
Today you will enjoy two of Seattle’s most unique, historical and hysterical attractions! First stop: the
Underground Tour. This humorous stroll through Seattle’s original downtown features a time-capsule view of life
prior to the Great Fire of 1889. Tour guides will regale you with true stories you won’t believe or soon forget! At
the completion of the tour, time will be given to enjoy a no-host lunch at one of the many Pioneer Square
restaurants and perhaps peruse some of the area’s wonderful shops. Last stop: the historic Smith Tower and
Observation Deck. Built in 1914, it remained the tallest building west of the Mississippi for nearly 50 years! The
views of Seattle, Puget Sound, Mt. Rainier and all points in between will be stunning. Please note: the
Underground Tour and Observation Deck include small amounts of walking and climbing some uneven stairs,
surfaces and pavement.

The Bullitt Center and Seattle Public Library Tour
Fast forward to the future! Today you will visit two of the most dynamic and modern buildings in Seattle. First
stop: the Bullitt Center. Billed as the greenest commercial building in the world, throughout the docent-led tour
participants will explore and learn about all of the design features that make this structure so amazing. After
breaking for a no-host lunch, participants will then visit the Seattle Central Library. Built in 2004, the downtown
branch sports a contemporary look and feel that is innovative in both form and function. Once again, participants
will enjoy a private tour highlighting the many attributes of the bold structure and what services the Seattle Public
Library System has to offer

Best of BC Garden Tour
British Columbia is well known for its exquisite gardens and wondrous parks. On today’s enriching adventure you
will visit three separate locations each complete with amazing collections of flowers and plants, quarry gardens,
large arboretums and more. Stops include Queen Elizabeth Park, the Bloedel Conservatory and the Van Dusen
Botanical Garden. Time will also be set aside to enjoy a delicious no-host lunch at either the Shaughnessy
Restaurant or the Truffles Café at Van Dusen. Please note: Proof of citizenship…valid passport, DMV enhanced
approved driver’s license or NEXUS card…is required to cross the border.

Whistler Village Getaway!
You requested it so here it is! On Tuesday and Wednesday, April 28 and April 29, head to Whistler, BC … home
of endless beauty, snow-capped mountains, miles of trails and the 2010 Winter Olympics. Depart Tuesday
morning and travel up the breathtakingly beautiful Sea to Sky Highway. The first stop will be Shannon Falls
Provincial Park, home of BC’s third largest waterfalls. After a quick break and a few photo ops, continue onto the
West Coast Railway Heritage Park in Squamish. The final stop of the day is Whistler Village. Accommodations at
the Hilton Whistler Resort and Spa are centrally located with amazing views, lovely rooms and all the amenities
you could ask for. On Wednesday explore the local shops, galleries, trails, restaurants, etc. before departing for
the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre and Museum where you will enjoy a drum and song ceremony, a fantastic
documentary film, a private tour, traditional crafts and a no-host lunch. On the leisurely drive home you will visit
Horseshoe Bay before arriving at the border. A complete supplies list and itinerary will be available upon
registration. Please note: Proof of citizenship (current passport, DMV enhanced driver’s license or NEXUS
card) is required to cross the border.

11th Annual MARCH FOR MEALS
In Support of Meals on Wheels March, 2015
MARCH FOR MEALS provides Skagit County seniors with a daily hot meal delivered to their homes. All
meals are provided on a donation basis and there is no financial eligibility criterion. Skagit County has been
providing this service to seniors for over 30 years.
In 2014, 3,200 Skagit seniors are projected to receive approximately 150,000 meals
of which 70,000 were delivered to their homes.
The Meals on Wheels program relies on community support to be able to continue to offer this vital service.
